Paul Cotton sang the original lead on this song & that's him here singing the lead. Sadly what's missing here is Tim Schmit on the chorus vocals & background, which gave the song more depth.
Al Garth is and always was an amazing guy he was my neighbor down the street in West Covina when we both were just Kids. He always liked music and was a musician always.
While not the best version I've heard, this song has such meaning to me as it reminds me of my brother who passed away in 2000 from cancer...Thank God I don't hear it that often otherwise I'd be teary-eyed 24/7!
Speaking of Al Garth....I can still remember seeing Loggins & Messina in 1973 or 74 with Al Garth in that group. That guy is an amazing musician. Violin and sax master.
I don't think it's that bad, just different. I mean, to me, Timothy makes this song... but he left... and he's not coming back to sing one song. This is just another version. However, Timothy's vocals will always be my favorite version of ROC.
Sorry, I agree with most everyone...this sounds HORRIBLE. Without that original bass player who sang very high and always perfect key....this band is lost without him. I believe his name is Timothy B. Smith....also plays and sings in the Eagles....but this version is horrible.
One could certainly make that case, although it would also be accurate to say that other lineups have the same merit or lack thereof. Al Garth (who is a hired gun, although extremely talented) was aboard for a short period of time. George Grantham (not Grant) was the backbeat of the group. And what about Richie? Would you say that without Jimmy & Richie that Poco doesn't exist? Let's be realistic, how many groups, this old and still touring retain more than one or two originals?
sorry about the "George-Grant" thing...my name is Grant..and you are right as the backbeat thing but he could sing higher than anyone I ever heard...I heard he's not in good health right now so god bless you George...but this is not POCO...god I saw them play this live warming up for Stills/Young band...and years earlier warming up for Peter Frampton..I became a big fan at that concert 'cause they began with "Keep on Tryin"..which I play to this day..see my site for the only version I could find
Bad vid but this IS Poco...you saw Tim with them (and holy crap, Al Garth?..he was NOT Poco)...then you're going back 30 +yrs..Go see the Eagles today-you won't see Meisner or Leadon or Felder either. Are today's Eagles still the Eagles? Sundrud was with Poco longer than Schmit or Meisner; he is BETTER, sorry to inform you. You won't tell by this very amateur vid. And I assume you mean George GRANTHAM. Yes, he had a stroke onstage in 04. But, Poco today does NOT disappoint.
Hey rpulsifer- I did not know that jimmy Messina was part of Poco! The same (is there any other) Jimmy Messina that later hooked up with Kenny Loggins?
You are right on the mark. Jim Messina had been producing the 2nd Buffalo Springfield album when the original bassist had some issues with immigration. Richie Furay like what he heard and found that he was compatible with Jimmy, so they started putting the third album together (to fulfill a contract). That's when Rusty Young got involved, playing the pedal steel on 'Kind Woman'. Richie, Jimmy & Rusty took the flavor of that song and ran with it, forming Poco (originally Pogo).
Rusty is the only one from the original lineup. Paul joined in 1970 or thereabouts when Jimmy Messina left the group. Jack Sundrud joined in the 80's and played with them off and on. George Lawrence, the drummer, joined when original drummer George Grantham had a stroke onstage.

Are any of these guys past members of the real Poco? Sounds maybe like Paul Cotton is here.

Poco was one of the greatest country bands that lead the way for the Eagles.
