i Love this song. It s freakin amazing. i play lead alto sax on it, and it just never gets old for me. It would be great of the rest of my high school band didnt kinda suck (minus our lead trombone, and tenor). It's always "too hard' for them, so they dont even try. It was hard for me too at first, but its amazing what a little freakin practice will do...as shown in this videohere. *sigh* what a nuisance.
@AvatarNub No offense, but I'm really doubting that a middle school jazz band could play this exact arrangement. Both the range and endurance in the trombone/trumpet section alone would be difficult for most high school groups. Show me a middle school player who can consistently play the double G required for this song, and I'll show you a kid who shouldn't be playing in a middle school band.
@Nexxion My extra-curricular jazz band played this in highschool, there is an arrangement that's alot easier and sounds pretty much the same. It removes alot of the flourishes

I'm in 8th grade and we played this on 192 wow. If only our Jazz Band teacher wasn't so mean because she didn't let our baritone player audition. Also, she didn't let the trombone players who auditioned pass.
BTW, the baritone player has a youtube account. He's my best friend his account is GodofWarhammers.
Too bad they actually arrange it for different bands. Who woulda thunk it? Also, you can play any song at any tempo you want. As for the beginning, know what I didn't hear in the beginning? Trombones. Trombones play the 1/16 and 1/8 notes thyroughout the entire song. I didn't hear any in the beggining.
The ending reminded me, the first time we played this for a semester concert, a few of the trombones let their slides fall all the way off at the end, nothing like ending with 3 or 4 clangs in the middle of the campus center.
what i love about this freaking band is it's like the dream team of musicians on the leads lol. you have eric marienthal on lead alto, andy martin on lead trombone, and thee mr. wayne bergeron on screaming lead trumpet lol
Actually if you look carefully, specifically the trumpet feature part at 5:50, you'll notice that Wayne isn't playing lead on this tune, its Dan Fornero.

You're an idiot or you've just never played this tune before. Just because Dan looks like hes trying alot harder doesn't mean he's playing lead. And also, on this tune, the other trpt parts have the lead line at moments.
Ok. Very "maturely" put. However, I played lead on this tune not 3 months ago, I have absolute pitch (and obviously know fingerings) so I can tell who's playing what, he's standing in the lead position, and this is all besides the fact that in the GG excerpt book it says that Dan plays lead on this tune. I did not say Wayne wasn't amazing, just that Dan deserves proper recognition. (I play trumpet AND saxophone, hence the name)
I can confirm that. I also have perfect pitch and know trumpet fingerings. I can tell that Dan is playing lead. Also, does it seem to anyone else that Gordon Goodwin is not as good at improvising live as he is on the albums?
No You are the idiot, Dan does play lead on this tune and the earlier Count Bubba...I went to a concert where Gordon even said that Dan was playing lead on this
Yeah Wayne's my hero... I play lead trumpet for my college jazz band. We played Backrow Politics last semester and were playing Count Bubba in the next concert. Every so often I think I'm doing pretty well, then I listen to the original recording and I'm reminded how far off I still am...
that trombone soli was amazing, craig ware's sooo amazing!

@Khu314 well, your brother's jazz band played an arrangement which I can guarantee is not nearly as challenging as the original.

pieindaface 2 years ago
the original arrangement is very difficult. You could probably find an arrangement that would be easier though.
XfreeXskierX31X 2 years ago
JW Pepper has it listed as a Medium-Advance which puts it at a low-middle group 1 song.
The original arrangement, that is.
