@billaverbach Yeah, Bill.... but I've watched it at least 20,000 times. What I want to know is how can 4 people NOT like this? I bet they don't like kittens or rainbows or babies either.
I also gig flounder and have been for many years. The very best time is on a rising tide. Flounders come in with the tide. Start when the tide is out and beginning to rise. You have to work fast. In my area the water is brackish so after a certain depth you can no longer see the bottom. Of course if you go on a low tide you may get a few stragglers and it is easier. Personally, I go every chance I get no matter the tide. I just love being out there. I also flounder in the marsh. So peaceful.
Wonderful flounder, Ive never done gigging myself, but I love to eat flounder. Where is this beatifull place at. And ever need some one to tag along, Im down to learn something differet.
If you go make sure you are equipped for mosquitoes the size of chickens. If you go down there you can go out with one of the charter guys or you can build yourself an underwater light and find a good place to walk. The best time is on the outgoing tide since the water is not a deep and the fish are headed for the Gulf.
good luck.
don't stab the little ones.
watch out for the dolphins they'll steal your stringer even if it is attached to you.
Unfortunately I now live in NC (as far as flounder fishing goes). A good place for flounder is the Aransas Shrimp Channel between Port Aransas and Aransas Pass, on the North side.
In Texas it is easy to get to the water because of the State Constitution; Water rights belong to the People.
Copono's pretty muddy.
You can make a gig from a push pole and float over the mud. just watch the wind. There's nothing like getting caught at night against some oyster bed with the tide going out.
I want this to remain a clean discussion, not a war. fish have no nerves in their mouth. thats why fluke here in ny have been known to eat mantis shrimp, which can break glass or even bone. fluke gulp them down anyway, even preferring them to squid and sandeels in some months. Flounder that are stabbed, however, do feel it cuz its not in the mouth.
I was a shrimper for a few months and saw some huge sea lice 10" long. I also saw ome of the hands get zapped by one and it must have been painful; it went through his finger.
As far as flounder feeling it, I don't care 'cause they taste sooooo good. But that's me and we each live our lives.
If you like fishing try the Texas Gulf Coast from Corpus Christi South. The bays are huge and shallow and they are loaded with beautiful speckled trout, red drum, black drum, and flounder. It is ideal for fly fishing and wade fishing. If you have a boat you can get to some amazing places through the series of bays.
30 inch flounder and 36 inch trout are not unusual there.

well...i hope that this remains an honest clean discussion, not a war. but fish don't feel in their mouth. this explains why, in ny, fluke (summer flounder) are found with mantis shrimp in their stomachs. mantis can slash their claws with enough force to break glass, even bones, but Fluke eat them anyway, even preferring them to Sandeels at some months, enough for Berkly to make a Gulp! Alive Mantis. The Flounder that are "gigged" are stabbed in the head and don't immediately die.besides, I release.
If I had the priveledge of being on a flat full of fish on a boat at night I wouldn't waste it killing fish so painfully as with a rake. Where's the skill, challenge, battle? It's as easy as fishing a rock out of a puddle with your hand. I would be on that same flat with a spinning reel and DOA Shrimp.
Gigging is not so bad... I never catch anything under 18 inches since I can see them. I try to stab them in their little heads not with a rake but a long pitchfork-like tool called a gig. In addition they don't panic like they do when you hook them and haul them in.
If someone was going to kill me I would want to go quickly not with a hook in my mouth.
However, if a shark came along and it was my time to go I would hope that the shark makes it quick. I am sure that anyway it happened would be less than painless.
hey bigme. i dont know a place in the chesapeak bay but i do know a place in NC. by nagshead there is a place called the sound. and at the sound ther is a place called orgen inlet. on a calm day you catch alot of flounder
i grew up on the bay and never heard of this until i moved to southeastern north carolina, its more of a down south thing... water isnt really that clear in VA and they have to be 18.5 inches last i remembered which is alot smaller that the typical flounders we gig down here, where they only have to be 14 inches
Great video! Yeah I lived in Corpus for five years, my video was def a mild red tide. I lived right off the bay (although the video was in Port A) and the smell always made me gag or I would think some animal died in my car or something. Keep up the nice work.
I liked the other video also. I just came in from a night of gigging down here in Wakulla County Florida and your song was in my head the whole time.Thanks.
i do alot of gigging around jax florida. st. augustine area...looks like some fatter ones there in the deeper water..im still on a quest for that 20 lb doormat...a 18 lb flatty was gigged in nassau sound close to here last week...

In Texas I would go out for the night and sometimes see 60 fish or more. Of course I didn't stab them all - only the ones over 20 inches.
I would scare the little ones out to the waiting dolphins. BWUAHAHA!

No war. Never over fishing.
If you like to fish that way and release them that's great. I like to eat them.
I know that those matis shrimp are nasty. In Texas they call them sea lice.

Ah, a sportsman!
I lived on the Gulf of Mexico and lived off the Gulf of Mexico. I eat what I catch and catch what I can when it's there.
Sport fishing is fun, but why torture the poor animals if you can't or won't eat 'em?
If you like the challenge then good for you.
DOA's are good lures but so is live bait. And there is a real thrill in catching the bait.

In Texas they only had to be 14 inches too.
We call them "potato chips"
If the water's nice and it isn't too windy and it is the middle of November you can always find those 24-30 inch mamas.
