Kelly wasnt only a brilliant bass and singer!! but his harmony qualities where exceptional to blend in with Bev (on bass parts) but mainly Jeff!!! (listen to "sweet is the night")
First heard this track on a jukebox in a cafe en route to Cornwall in 1977. Loved it straightaway. Had to casually wander over to jukebox to see who it was. Bought Face The Music when I got home. Should have been an A side.
@mariovas1766 sure buddy this is the song list for this album: 1. fire on high 2. waterfall 3. evil woman 4. nightrider 5. poker 6. strange magic 7. down home town 8. one summer dream 9. fire on high (early alternate mix) 10. evil woman (stripped down mix) 11. strange magic (single edit) 12. waterfall (instrumental mix). thats the whole album dude!
Outstanding! Like a banquet of sound after hearing the homogenised bland shit that passes as music today. I first heard this as a B side in about 1977 and still love it today. An excellent posting, thank you.
ELO...the band I grew up with in the late 70s and early 80s. We went our separate ways but are now back together again.....such memories....a great band. RIP Kelly Groucutt & Mike Edwards.
A hidden gem. Bands in the 70s released such great albums with barely any filler. To me this is very prog influenced but without all the meandering nonsense.
The comparison with punk is silly. ELO did however influence some alternative bands, especially Super Furry Animals who seem infatuated with them. Check out a track like "Ice Hockey Hair"!
This is definitely ELO playing punk rock in 1975. I had the same impression when I listened to it and checking teh interwebs I see other people think the same.
I´m not sure if there was one. Jeff always stated that ELO was his band and the musicians were treated as such regarding wages and royalties etc but that he controlled everything.
On the third Day, Eldorado and Face the Music.............my personel favorites.......Jeff Lynn seemed to go to main stream after that....still love em thou
All of the Ska/Punk Bands that thought Black Flag and the Misfits were the founders of that genre need to listen to this song because this song may have influanced the the punk bands that were later in the 70's. If you listen to the main riffs and verses before the Flynn orchestration and off timing injection into the song if it were played straight through unchanged it would be a basic "punk" song. Definatley one of my FAVORITE bands ever!!!
I'm not an ELO fan, but I always liked this song...maybe because the slashing guitar chords and driving beat remind me so much of The Move, out of whom the group evolved. Thanks for posting this.
Their "B" sides gold be very strong couldn't they.My first single was Telephone Line, and the B side was Poor Boy which I thought for many years to be The Best Song In The World!!lol.
Agreed! Great B sides. I think my first was Livin´Thing with Fire on High as a B side. My younger sister didn´t like me to play it as it scared her! OK, we were only about 9:)
This,in my opinion is from ELO's best album"face the music"every song on it is so good i think Jeff is a world class talent and should be given some sort of recognition, they give footballers MBE'S for god's sake so why not Jeff?.
WOW!!! Absolutely Fantastic!!! The scope of Jeff Lynne's talents is incredible.Ive been an ELO fan for 30 years and still cant get enough of that fantastic sound.Make the most of Jeff Lynne's talents because you'll never hear the likes of it again!!
Story behind the 'peering faces' promo-shot is that it was supposed to be them all looking in on an execution, Richard Tandy thought this was in poor taste which is why he is looking away.

From :15 to 1:24 the guitar/bass/drums sounds a lot like the Ramones. But...they sounded like that in 1974. Cool song.

Face the Music and A New World Record are what I consider the pinnacle of ELO. Out of the Blue was great, but the two albums before it are legendary.

Incredible.
Listen to this song between 0:36 till 1:05.
And You will hear classic mainstream pop punk of early 90-ties (ala Green Day and Offspring)

Down Home Town is very obviously entirley Jeff,(apart from the backing vocals!),using his own Brummie accent and a Dylan influence.
