  • Stephen Merritt - The best lyricist OAT.

    IMHO

  • Why is the audience laughing? This song always makes me so sad. :(

  • Oh, how I envy you all. I would love to see these guys play live. Unfortunately, I live in Australia...and the chances of them touring are on a par with me landing a three way with Miranda Kerr and Jennifer Morrison :P

  • I must be one of a few Magnetic Fields fans that actually DOES NOT find this song funny at all. The first time I heard it I pictured a man that had callously fallen out of love with his wife, abused and taken her for granted for years and eventually ended up killing her just as cold. It is quite depressing to me, particularly if you have ever been in the position of the woman asking the questions in the song, asking if someone still loves you. Either way everyone has their own interpretation.

  • @Sonnenradikal - I guess there's an element of exaggeration that's supposed to be humorous, but I agree that it' is sad and desperate

  • @Sonnenradikal Yep. I picture my ex-wife in Stephen's role.

  • stephen is one of the most dead pan people i ever saw in my life.

its awesome how he looks so bored all the time

  • this song is about my parents. quite possible the most depressing song ever written

  • she is sooooo cute!

  • ugh

  • Ha she switched it at the end

  • stephen merrit must be the expert of heartache. i guess we all become that way eventually, to be cynical... which 69 love songs is.

  • this song is cool!

  • i love that he always looks so bored

  • @8scatterbrain8 Well he does hate touring.

  • HEJA SVERIGE!

  • @ejyounggun08 HA DET BRA!

  • @earthvssoup26 Tack!!

  • Great stuff!

  • my favorite song!

  • ...the very words I want to say to an ex-lover

  • Haha!!

  • I love the girl who sings, she's absolutely pretty!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I saw them a few days ago and they did the same- very theatric with this song

  • I love how this song creepes into your body and makes you close your eyes and laugh and listen and kinda forget everything.

  • Doesn't every Magnetic Fields song do that? :D

  • Stephin Merritt can do no wrong.

  • MERRITT LOVE.

  • look at Stephinsongs . wiw . org for the chords to all songs by merritt

  • HOLY SHIT I LOVE HER

this is one of the funniest songs I've ever heard

  • Does anyone know the chords?

My favorite Magnetic Fields song by far, by the way...

  • ummmm... that's the point...

  • yeah send them to GIT so they can shred better. The guitar is slightly out of tune in this clip but its not like they dont know HOW to tune up. and the singing is fine. Tuning is an issue for anyone playing live music, but if you are more concerned than tuning than communicating to people and moving them emotionally, then you are just another tool. Something I'll wager they've done more successfully than you ever have or will.

  • I'm going to see them in Chelsea in July. It will be the first ever concert I've ever been to, I'm so excited and scared at the same time!!!

  • The crowd laughter bugs me. I mean, sure, these songs are witty and clever, but it just kind of cheapens the songs when they laugh after every goddamn line. Part of the coolness about the Fields is that they handle serious issues with a self-deprecating attitude. But, the issues are still clearly serious. Here, the audience just makes it all seem like a joke, which is kind of sad.

  • well said!

  • I don't agree about this particular song. I think this song is 100% just supposed to be funny.

  • genious

  • PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE is there any way i can get a copy of this performance?? I LIVE for the magnetic fields and i adore the acoustic simplified concert performance versions of the song--i think they sound better than the cd! please help if you can! sincerely, a violinist/music fan!!!

  • Sweet!

  • The magnetics fields are like an audio version of nicotine. : )

  • Stephen Merritt is beyond clever

  • amazingly pretty:)

  • Where can i find more magnetic fields live ??

Im dying to see more. especially tracks from 69 love songs. there's not much on youtube..

  • Well ato23, they are performing a short US tour up until like march of '08. their website is called "The House Of Tomorrow" just google it. :) and p.s. Eekeers 369, the collective group is not middle class, ans if you didnt notice two of them AREN'T WHITE! You are less then astute you dickless neophite, and please keep all negative critiscism to your mothers basement where you currently house your worthless ass jump into moving traffic on the interstate. Bastard.

  • bahahahahaahahahaha

    This was absolutely brilliant.

  • yeah! oh yeah! ...

Nick Cave & Shane Mcgowan ,,, lovely... but Nick Cave and Stephen Merrit duet? nice.

  • 1:38-40 hahaha

  • hilarious!

  • After Nick Cave, TMF have the finest collection of songs, in the world.

  • "oh, i need you more than air...is it true you just don't care???" thank you TARNATION (the movie) commentary track for making me aware of this wonderful band! NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH!!!!

  • Love to hear people laughing--this is a really funny song! They sound great live!

  • better studio- I don't need a visual

  • I love stephin songs!

  • Love it!!

  • I always saw this as such a sad & tragic song; it's weird to see them sorta hamming-it-up.

  • It is weird, but you gotta admit, it adds a fresh new dimension to the work and, well, it's just plain cool to see her up on that chair singing in such an artificially cheery way about such a sad topic.

  • Really good vocals on this one! Yeah, it seemed a little high schoolish and corny, but they were playing to the live audience. On a CD, it's a lot easier to be deadpan and cool.

  • This song is supposed to have a sense of irony and humor, but the laughter bugs the hell out of me.

  • awesome .. hope they tour again soon! new album this years supposedly

  • I was at this show! Thanks so much for posting this! He is such a genius.

  • this is one of my favorite TMF songs. And the performance was a bit corny but I liked it.

  • corny performance, great funny song

  • This is too beautiful...

  • genius

  • She looks just like how I imagined she would, from hearing her on the CD. I'm weird.

  • Excellent. I wish there was mopre magneticos on youtube.

  • awesome, need more

  • so cool

  • beautiful
