The audience is laughing either out of discomfort (it happens), or because the lyrics are so over the top that they give the song a tongue-in-cheek vibe.
Oh...how I envy you all. I'd love to see them live...unfortunately I live in Australia, and the chances of them touring here are on a par with me landing a three-way with Miranda Kerr and Jessica Alba

I must be one of a few Magnetic Fields fans that actually DOES NOT find this song funny at all. The first time I heard it I pictured a man that had callously fallen out of love with his wife, abused and taken her for granted for years and eventually ended up killing her just as cold. It is quite depressing to me, particularly if you have ever been in the position of the woman asking the questions in the song, asking if someone still loves you. Either way everyone has their own interpretation.

Not to offend fans of the Magnetic Fields, but while the lyrics are quite creative and interesting, their musical talent is TERRIBLE! Send these guys to music school so they can learn how to sing and play in KEY!, IN TUNE! The reason why people laugh is because the lyrics are artful the music sucks! Hey, Magnetic Fields: Tune your friggin' guitar and learn how to sing in key with it and you are on to something. Learn the fundamentals rookies and your lyrical messages will resonate much better.
yeah send them to GIT so they can shred better. The guitar is slightly out of tune in this clip but its not like they dont know HOW to tune up. and the singing is fine. Tuning is an issue for anyone playing live music, but if you are more concerned than tuning than communicating to people and moving them emotionally, then you are just another tool. Something I'll wager they've done more successfully than you ever have or will.
The crowd laughter bugs me. I mean, sure, these songs are witty and clever, but it just kind of cheapens the songs when they laugh after every goddamn line. Part of the coolness about the Fields is that they handle serious issues with a self-deprecating attitude. But, the issues are still clearly serious. Here, the audience just makes it all seem like a joke, which is kind of sad.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE is there any way i can get a copy of this performance?? I LIVE for the magnetic fields and i adore the acoustic simplified concert performance versions of the song--i think they sound better than the cd! please help if you can! sincerely, a violinist/music fan!!!
Well ato23, they are performing a short US tour up until like march of '08. their website is called "The House Of Tomorrow" just google it. :) and p.s. Eekeers 369, the collective group is not middle class, ans if you didnt notice two of them AREN'T WHITE! You are less then astute you dickless neophite, and please keep all negative critiscism to your mothers basement where you currently house your worthless ass jump into moving traffic on the interstate. Bastard.
"oh, i need you more than air...is it true you just don't care???" thank you TARNATION (the movie) commentary track for making me aware of this wonderful band! NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH NAH!!!!
It is weird, but you gotta admit, it adds a fresh new dimension to the work and, well, it's just plain cool to see her up on that chair singing in such an artificially cheery way about such a sad topic.
Really good vocals on this one! Yeah, it seemed a little high schoolish and corny, but they were playing to the live audience. On a CD, it's a lot easier to be deadpan and cool.
Stephen Merritt - The best lyricist OAT.

@Sonnenradikal - I guess there's an element of exaggeration that's supposed to be humorous, but I agree that it' is sad and desperate
