  • I am a Hardscape Contractor in Pennsylvania. This is by no means a recommended method to install a paver patio. Lowes youtube videos are closer to the industry standard than this joke of an install. Please do not follow this video as a instruction video for your patio. It will fail within 6 months to a year. I know Florida does not have any issues with freeze thaw but there needs to be a minimum of 4 inches of compacted granular base with a plate compactor (NOT FOOT STOMPED).

  • it looks great man, funny ending shawn, keep it up

  • This is what i'll be doing this weekend. All by hand and I'm a woman.... this is something that i can do now with the help of this video, and it is superfluous to hire a contractor and pay hundreds of dollars for 80 sq feet of simple bricks. Thank you very much for sharing how you did this, it is easy to understand and i loved the way you used the 2x4 with the level for each row to make sure the bricks and sand were level. i'm in siesta key, FL and it's too dang hot to get too complicated. LOL!

  • Looks good to me, well done!

  • Come on contractors; admit it; sometimes a $300 job gets it done in place of your $1,300 job.

  • Looks good to me...still good after four years? Even better. Good Job.

  • horrible

  • Well, i was looking for something easy and that could encourage me to get start here in my house and this video was awesome. Great video! Francisco Peinado from Brazil.

  • haha thats what im doing right now everything by hand i dont need complicated machines just a level and a shovel all you need nice work

  • This guy must be a helper ,not an installer lol

  • I'm a realtor and get sucked in to fixing all the problems for the homeowner but you went way beyond the call of duty. Great work! It may not be the correct way but an A for Effort!

  • I'm a realtor and get sucked in to fixing all the problems for the homeowner but you went way beyond the call of duty. Great work!

  • awesome! more than i can ever imagine doing but i will thanks to posts like these!

  • thanks for the vid. Great for DIYer. Too many pro in here watching your vid.?

  • You know what? I had to make a makeshift walkway one time and I didn't even do this much. Mine worked until we could afford the real thing. You people who are criticizing need to get a life. If the woman who paid for it is happy, then so be it. I do wish you would attach a picture or something at the end of the finished product.

  • No forms, the patio isnt low enough below the screen door, no base material, and leveling by hand, you got to be kidding me? No pitch for runoff? Dude, who taught you how to do a walk?

  • @jasonbies Guess what, the patio still looks great after four and a half years - there you go...

  • @jasonbies its a brick patio. It's as simple as that...

  • No base gravel under the screening? Sorry but your bricks will sink within a month...

  • I like it very much. especially the part where he bricks over the grass.

  • Hi everyone - I am obviously not a bricklayer - I'm an artist/realtor and I thought it might be fun to make a music video of the project - sorry if it offends the real trades people who know how to do the job properly - have a great day!

  • WTF????

  • Бляяя!!! Полная херь.

  • that will b the WRONG way to do it what about the edging!! and nothing has been compacted down!

  • nice i'd put a nice wooden skirt around it

  • oh my god !!! ...well at list you got the idea hahaha at list you know the brick are going on top of the sand

  • pity the camcorder didn't run out before you started the job !!

  • We have a name i the UK for "tradesmen" like this fella.

    A Cowboy.

That is the best demonstration I have ever seen of how not to lay block paving.

    Truly awful.

Why would you put it on Youtube?

  • Like the music who is it?

  • thatll look nice when it washes down the road... what a load of dogshit

  • a good example of how not to lay pavers

  • Nice Wheelbarrow; and like the Ghost at 04:23 lol

  • also to sasquatch 1366 - you will never need to check your paving bricks are level as your sand base must be 100% flat (with slight fall away from house) before laying pavers onto it. if your base is right your patio will be to.

  • this is not the way to lay a patio at all, firstly you need to set an edging in concrete around the whole patio area then compact the hardcore into it to give a firm base, then you need to construct timber rails around the whole perimeter of the desired patio area allowing a slight fall away from your house to allow drainage. sand should then be compacted down firmly and then tamped from edge to edge of the whole area until completly firm and flat. that patio will sink like the titanic!!!

  • job well done ,looks great .good music

  • i'm sorry but that was a horrible install, you never tamped down the gravel so theres a possibility that the bricks will start to sag after a few inches of rain, you never check to make sure the bricks are level going across, yeah you checked the sand but never made sure the bricks were level. you can see them raise and dip along the edge. i looked into everything before i did mine and i think mine turned out alot better because i looked up the proper ways to install a patio.

  • Great work, we are a designing company in Southern California and just took photo's of a new paver product coming out in 2011. It has a 3D effect and a unique star pattern. We are interested to find out if this paver application could be a potential seller in your area? Call LifeScape or comment on our youtube UrLifescape Channel, we are interested in your opinion. Thank you.

  • If anyone cares, the second song was done by SonnyTerry and Brownie McGee, not Sonny Boy Williamson. There are 2 Sonny Boy Williamsons. The second SBW is probably the better known. His real name was Rice Miller. // I liked your video.

  • at 4:23 the door opens by itself :o

  • what a big joke!!!

  • I just clicked the link to this video because I was bored, but now I want to know what the downside is to not having a compactor and border is. Out of curiosity :)

  • also the part where he was feverishly jumping up and down on the base for 3 hours he edited out , I watched the unedited version and it was insane, paramedics came twice, but he just kept going.

  • Hey all you critics, you don't know this simple fact. This guy has extremely dense body mass and weighs 400 pounds, he is like super human, this is why he used his feet to compact.

  • moron you need a compactor!! im a paving expert what is this?? looks like a job my 10 year old would do..your a complete ass

  • @botzaro00 Dude, seriously, calm down. There is no need to insult the man because you don't like his work. That doesn't make any sense. Just go elsewhere....

  • good stuff my man!

  • Thanks Shawn, pleased I watched your video, now I know I dont have to piss around with tamping or making a good grade. Just wished I had watched it before I had done an 11 inch ecavation. Looks more like a pier, than a patio.

    Good job :)

  • Good work, if its just a basic home temporary work, I know its probably washed away right now.. But it was fun to watch, no wonder 119,560 views :D Good job there..

  • Good Job!

  • dude compacting? this patio will be toast in 6 months

  • Nice video. Great music. Boy, you sure do work fast. LOL

  • No tamping? I guess in Florida they dont worry about freezing and thawing! Other than that nice job but I bet it wont last long!

  • lol,get an office job, cowboy.watch my vid to see how its done,

    whitethorn landscaping

  • ha ha ha! Those pavers are gonna spread like ripples on a millpond.

  • Lurrrvv the music. Clapton & Sonny Boy, make it well worth watching. Even tho' it is a shit paving job.

  • It is sonny terry & brownie magee after clapton!

  • wheres your hat and gunbelt....COWBOY

  • In the immortal words of the esteemed "M.R. T"....... "I pity 'da fool who buys this idiots house!"..............Good thing it NEVER rains in FLA.....

  • that will stay that nice until the first rain. how the hell is the end suppose to stay on the edge of the sloping, non-compacted sand?? have to agree with others, terrible install, nice video editing, good effort

  • jesus christ

  • wow. i'm a 29 year old female with no experience whatsover doing outdoor projects, but i watch enough HGTV to know you have to use SOME SORT of hand tamper or compactor and not your FEET

  • @fpic I am laughing as I write/type this.

I had to watch this vid. when I saw the title"Laying a BRICK patio".......Patios (where I come from) are finished with "PAVERS" or paving stones. "BRICKS" are for walls (or random acts of Vandalism) But hey, he made a fun video to watch......Or love to hate?

  • When I saw the huge mound of sand near the end that the brick was on, I threw up in my mouth. The moron should go to an ICPI class & learn to do things right. This is a "what not to do" example.

  • You know how to give really negative unconstructive comments. Use your talent to teach and inspire instead of to bash.

  • 4:20 a ghost pushed the door open lol good video

  • DO NOT! use this example, horrible installation.

maybe a compactor? go to an ICPI recognized manufacturer and view some installation pdf's.

  • @strongback71 even a hand tamper would have been better, thats what i used when i did mine.

  • I don't want to be a dick and insult the guy, but this is a terrible job and I hope nobody uses this as a learning tool. If anything, this video is an example of how NOT to do a brick patio. There are so many things wrong, but it's not worth getting into. Needless to say, it won't last long and I hope he wasn't paid for this.

  • ugly job !!!

  • wtf. no grade no platiing on 3 inch of sand. wtf ist that

  • This is what illegal mexicans do, too... That's why our economy is messed up...

  • your mama bitch.

  • and you white crack heads stand in the corner while they get the job done

  • I wonder if shootin' the breeze on the freckin cell phone is part of this process?

  • He's a routin toutin...Not a clue what he's doutin....Hope they didnt pay for this......YeeeeeHarrrrr.....!!!!

  • Wheres the hardcore and scrabbler?

  • they decided to use drum n bass and cluedo instead.

  • so then..say it were to rain..as it does on earth.. its gonna go straight into the joints on the patio n wash all the undersand from the outside..u aint got a bloody clue, not a bloody clue. this patio needs a membrane, well actually it needs someone who knows what there doing which clearly aint you....

  • this won't last long without better foundadtions. Please don't copy this example!

  • Very true. hahaha I was watching this and laughing on how proud this guy is of himself but a proper excavation wasnt done (7-8"), 3/4" crush gravel was not used, no tamping was done, the patio went over the grass near the fence with out a proper base...etc...etc. This patio will sink by next spring and will have to be taken up and redone.

    Have fun.

  • wont be long before this patio sinks plus weres the crushed concrete u nob

  • ye but looks like he may be in Tamppa...so hes exempt,,,so what he will do it again in a year............looks cool ...A111111111

  • haha that job will last 1 year tops dident tamp ounce lMAO

  • I don't see a hand tamper or a mallet ?!?!!?

  • so what are you going to do with the pile of dire you have so carefully preserved

  • well if you wondered where cowboys got their name from look no further...what a total tit!

  • If anybody has or knows of any step by step turorial videos please let me know I am redoing my patio. Thanks

  • Thanks, Shawn, for sharing this. However, I've watched a bunch of paving videos on YouTube and I think these comments are correct: you need to seriously compact whatever underlies the sand and provide a border to prevent it from leaking out from under your pavers. Great video work with the intermittent filming! Cheers, J

  • put the pavers on concrete, best base you can have...

  • change yer pants dude

  • Lol you cold rent a compactor from home depot for $40 your feet will not work, the job looks good but will not last, words of a paver guy.

  • Is it going to be all wavy when it rains? I'm a complete newbie when it comes to this stuff.

Also, would you recommend concrete over sand?

  • I like the shadow of the expending tripod the best...

  • Kind of you to share a video and I'm not going to be rude but a few points for others..

    - You need edging or to concrete in the outer blocks, otherwise it will fall apart.

    - You should have a firm sub base - you may already have one from the previous removed paving. Otherwise dig out enough soil to acommodate one and use a compacter on it.

    - Work to an adequate slope so that rain water runs away from the building.

  • looks good. but thats to much work!!! ha

  • YEEEE HAAAA COWBOY

  • that cocksucker couldn't build that bastard in 7 minutes.

  • Wow buddy, I sure hope it doesn't rain or you expect it to last. The sand will just settle and will wash out on the edge because you have no edging at all and the base is not compacted. The way it looked at the end of your movie i give it a year. Usable for 3 year and replaceing in 4 years Sorry good try though.

  • I agree with you 100%. He tamped it by stepping on it? Poor workmanship. I'm no mason. but I'm planning on doing my walkway in pavers and everything I've read says to use a tamper or power compactor.

  • nice job! what's the sq.footage? how many pavers did you use?

  • Wish I could move that fast when I build my patio. Great work!

  • THANK YOU

  • Great job. Loved watching !

  • love it man

  • If professional patio builders built patios like that, they would be put in jail. The lady who had you do that must have had Alzhiemers disease. Anyway, the video was O.K.

  • 1st rodeo...we all make mistakes

  • This video should be titled "How to build a patio with no working knowledge of anything ".

    I love watching people "wing-it".

  • who is singing that second song? I love the soundtrack :)

  • looks nice

yes the foot tamping ..... hmmmm interesting

i bet things will sink in time

  • No doubt they will sink with such a thin layer beneath. Mine has sunk with a 9 inch based of crushed stone. It's been 10 years though.

  • cowboy builder.you should be ashamed.

  • cool, looks like we used the same style of bricks! I would have liked to make a bigger project than just a large rectangle on mine! ;)

  • Please don't watch this video. It is the most incorrect way to lay a patio. No compaction after the first rain it will sink. Sand is not strong enough must use coarse gravel. 8 inches down is minimum for base. Sorry to you Siesta Shawn. Next time hire a certified contractor...

  • Or at least read up on creating a patio....

  • 4 " of crush rock the compact it with a plate compactor, re level everything and compact it again, then use 1/2" of sand just to set the pavers, then compact it again with the plate compactor......

I hope he does not do any paver driveways..!!

  • I thought your footstep tamping was the best. I'm surprised the fat lady didn't sink when she stepped onto the patio.

  • quite breathtaking, just awesome!

  • it took you two days to do a 100 sq ft job,and wheres the borders, and why did you use play sand instead of screaning sand or any other sand that wonk sink when a bug walks on it,man i feel bad for the costumer.

  • lol i was thinking some of the same things like why is there a 4 inch sand base around the edge and why was this not compacted i hope this is his house not a job lol

  • wow you use your feet for a compactor way to go dumbass, now you will make rest of us paver guys look bad and slow.

  • fantastic mate, builders from hell are on the way.

  • ye ha

  • I lay bricks like this for a living, paving stones of course, and I was wondering...Why didn't you go buy at least a 10 lb. hand tamper or maybe rented a compacter? Was there any sinking after? Did you sand afterwards? Concrete the edges, or at least some pave edge? Did you straighten before you compacted the bricks? What kind of slope did you have after all compaction? I'm an jerk with all these question but I just thought I'd ask. Oh and two, two inch wide, 1/4 inch 10 foot bars will be easier

  • That thing will be falling apart soon.

  • I'm having our paver plaza installed starting tomorrow at our office building. I opted to contract this one out because we have a 20 inch deep concrete pad that needs to be torn up before hand.

We're putting in 8 inches of gravel, then 6 inches of cement dust, then a pattern of techo block pavers in shale grey with a 9ft half circle radius in sandlewood. Its gunna be great.

Looks nice though, I'd like to do that to the back door of my own house.

  • The 2 layers, sand and gravel should be compacted first. Then lay pavers then compact. After compacting sand and gravel, you should not stand on it until you lay the pavers. Heringbone pattern is more suitable than basket weave.

  • I tired. How about a Budlight?

  • Nice video, good music too.

  • How about some actual facts on how to build other than Blues music and time lapse video?

  • were is the base?

  • Thanks for going through the trouble of recording and posting your work. It's much appreciated -- Thanks!

  • Did you use a plate compactor?

  • dunno how u get away wiv it

  • Nice Job in Canada we do it the same way but we put 6"

of stone under the fine dust I like your paintings and murals too.

  • how do u keep the ground leveled?

  • quite littlerally breathtaking

  • Nice job laying the brick and choosing the music.

    Bill-Englewood,FL

  • Great!

  • i worked up a sweat just watching you work!!! nice job.
