Very sad and historic day indeed. Too bad it took a major disaster like this midair to get some action. United went on to have additional midairs in 1958 and 1960. So more lives were lost even as a result of the first major tragedy. The possibility of flight resulting in an "aluminum shower" is one of the worst fears any aviator. See and be seen is antiquated, but still used both in radar and non radar environments. Keep your head on a swivel and the eyes outside of the cockpit.
