  • The diamond fairy looks like she's dancing the part of the violente. LOL.

  • ooh my goodness i absolutely love this!!!

okay the technique is pretty bad but I mean..they're DANCING!! they're dancers and not only "ballet-roboters"!

    thanks for uploading:)!!

  • holy. crap. ... so much footwork.....

  • ok so they're not turned out 180 degrees and their legs don't hit their faces...this does not mean that they have bad technique! part of ballet is being exciting to watch--"tricks" seem to have replaced this prerequisite as of late. who cares if you can do four pirouettes and perfect split leaps if you're an acute bore to watch?

  • i really never get tired of this one! :)

  • it`s so beautiful and life. I never saw such a beautiful ballet at present. And seriously, they look much more beautiful when they are not too thin just as the present ballerinas

  • i love the older dancers!!! they really have more passion and movement and life then the dancers today. its sad everyone is so caught up with just technique it feels like. back then their technique wasnt the best but it wasnt bad by any means! they rocked this!

  • about 1963

  • This film is a great representation of British ballet of the mid 20th century. It does not, however, reflect the state of technique everywhere. This film was shot before it became the norm to have alot of cross-fertilization between many different styles, etc.

  • I would so much rather see this kind of dancing - alive, musical, joyous and heartfelt, than good technique and less feeling.

  • like around wht year do u guys think this was

  • it looks late 60´s early 70´s to me... maybe more 60´s but thats a really good question.

  • i agree with you it looks more like 60's

  • tHEY ARE FABULOUS

  • this was fun to watch, I enjoyed it very much.

  • r they just going abnormally fast or is it the recording?

  • puah its actually normal time, i think..

they just happen to be amazing X33

  • no it isnt sped up - this is actually the proper way to perform these steps, & the tempi are all correct not only choreographically but muscially as well. This is exactly how the music would have been played at the 1890 premiere. Today dancers are longer, and as such the majorty of thier legs take longer to move.

  • Beautiful..

  • yes, technique is better now. But the art has suffered as a result. That is why the art of ballet has turned into mathematics, and why people would rather see a person who can perform tricks rather than a true artist. Many young dancers - particularly in the US - know nothing of their art aside from technique... and it shows.

  • mrlopez, i would just like to say its wonderful that to see your opinion on things, especially due to your extensive knowledge of ballet history. I think its great that you post comments on youtube videos to explain the history of the ballet, variation, music, and so much more. Thank you so much!!

  • I definitely agree with you. I as well often see a lack in artistry with the pressured technique.

By the way, Sylphida, Thank you for putting this one up! It is one of my favorite parts of the ballet!

  • yeahhhh i definatly agree with you. it's like, you go to YAGP and see all of these talented dancers preforming tricks instead of the artform. yeah they can get their leg up and do multiple pirouetts, but it isn't art.

  • I think this is so much better than any current dancing I have seen from major international companies.

  • yes it's true that this lower body technique would never do today, but look at the upper body presentation and the musicality.

  • i don't know what your talking about. her feet are complete sickled!

  • Wow you know the dynamics of ballet today has grown so much! Technique has higher standards. However, I never see smiles like that in today's performances.

  • merle park and graham usher dont know the other gel!

  • I have the dvd - believe the other girl is Georgina Parkinson now ballet mistress at abt.

  • ABSOLUTLEY FABULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

if only ballet was done with this much style, performance and dynamics these days! ok the technique is a bit oldfashioned but can't u just see how much they love it!!!! what a treat!!! xxx

  • yeah i agree!

i've seen more recent versions of 'the jewels' and though they were good, this one for me has the most character and is more fun to watch!

  • Oh dear. No one could possibly look good doing that choreography that fast.

This is what is normally the first act Pas de Quatre, or in this case a Pas de Trois.

  • LifeAboveTheClouds

I believe they just did choreography that fast and looked absolutley smashing.

  • Gosh!.. the dancer in the 2nd variation can reli travel! have you noticed ?

    xx

  • That first girl does not seem to be over her box.. Am I right?

  • why dont you try this variation as fast as she did..then we'll see whos "over their box."

these were older times people..not too old, but not recent.

  • You're right

  • I guess that's why I like adagio better

  • That was beautiful!!!

  • That's a great example of style, energy, real technique. Notice how on the beat they were, part of the music? They had more line because they were there on the beat and held that moment so you can see it.

Dancers today are not superior to people of the past. Did you notice how fast her beats were, faster than the film could capture? How much stronger her muscles were, not being all elongated?

  • even though i didnt actually like the way they danced...there better dancers then me and i kno they must hav worked so hard.

  • does anyone know the name of the variation that the fist girl did?????

  • erm well im learning it at RBS SA's and our teacher told us that it was a jewels solo, if that helps

    xx

  • thanks!

  • no problem bit of a simple answer so hope it helps.. =]

    xx

  • great!the artist are Merle Park(diamond), Georgina Parkinson(silver) & Graham Usher(gold)...i don't understand why there isn't the variation of sapphire...

  • I like it! Nice.....

  • if he was in the royal ballet, that means he was good!

i think you dont know nothing about ballet darling!

you should have more ballet lessons, than come talk to me..

    kisses honey!

  • They may not have the turn out and body required these days, but the dancing is absolutely incredible and so precise, especially the first lady.

  • seriously, usually it looks like a mess.

  • The royal ballet had a little problem of the World War 2. Ballet virtually stopped in UK unlike the Paris Opera that was performing all through the German occupation. It took a long time for British ballet to recover. De Valois had to employ many overseas dancers but she employed only British male dancers saying that had had to fight. Virtually no ballet schools and no teachers.

  • The Royal Ballet was noted for keeping the most authentic version of Petipa's choreography outside of Russia. I was taught this identical choreography years ago by Lorita Travaglia who taught at Ballet Rotaru. She in turn learned it from Russian ballerinas!

  • Could I please correct you this is not Nureyev's choreography it is Dame Ninette de Valois and Sir Frederick Ashtons. It was revived after the war and performed at the Royal Opera House and the title role of Princess Aurora is Dame Margot Fonteyn.

  • i reeeeeeally don't like that tutu in the beginning!

  • This is Prince Floreston and his sisters. I think this is Nureyev's choreography? I danced this last year, but the coda was quite different. The solos are the same. Where is Prince Floreston's solo? Haha

  • must be Irina torpakova, a great ballet dancer from Russia.

  • this is an old video. I think the two ballerinas might be Georgina Parkinson and Merle Park. It's from the royal ballet anyway.

  • well, seems like there are many problems ~~ looks weirdo...

  • could you be more specific?

  • I mean they did the steps really quick, like fast forwarded~~~ and I think they kinda look like dolls!

  • oo! i see whats sorta wierd!! their feet arnt very pointed like their shoes arent broken in or something....

  • i guess they hadn't discovered turnout yet...

  • woah! it looks like its been put on fast forward!

  • lol

  • The dancers in order of appearance are Georgina Parkinson, Merle Park and Graham Usher.

  • thanks :)

  • Absolutely correct!

  • wat year is this from???

  • 1963

  • Could it be Elizabeth Anderton and Merle Park? Who is the man?

  • I absolutely adore how she actually looks like she's having fun out there! Yay!

  • where is the turnout?

  • perhaps the first was lynn seymour? i'm not sure though

  • hehe
