Why aren't men queueing up at sperm banks? As I recall, Arthur Dent (AKA The Sandwich Maker) did just that. Not for the progeny, but for the money. The progeny turned out to be a bit of a problem...
@sbergman27: "Why aren't men queueing up at sperm banks? As I recall, Arthur Dent (AKA The Sandwich Maker) did just that. Not for the progeny, but for the money. The progeny turned out to be a bit of a problem..."
if you make it to part 2, they address this directly:
"sperm banks is a very good example... a naive interpretation of Darwinian theory would queue up at sperm banks..." watch the beginning, from 0:00 to 0:58. good day.
@kotsilio I couldn't agree more and I fervently second that notion to anyone who might be reading this. I haven't read any of his other books yet, but those two are GOLDEN. Even if you didn't agree with them for some reason, they would be fascinating nonetheless.
interesting he talks about jealousy here. Ive always considered jealousy as a manifestation of insecurity. I don't think "unconscious" would be an out of place word at all in this discussion. then again, one of my favorite thinkers is jung... not sure how popular he is with the evolutionary psychologiest.
I wish our early day psychologists like the neo-freudians and behaviorists would have given a careful thought to Darwin and Co. Psychology would be much more matured field than it is today. The problem with all of them is that they have no basis for their theories. The answer to subconscious, birth order, anxiety etc, is 'because we think so'. It has to be based in biology, as psychology is basically applied biology. So i guess Jung or any odr neo-freudian wont be too popular
@caradhye I see crucial differences between freud and jung. jung had many interesting ideas, but psychology was still very much a "fuzzy science" back then, and I think theres good reason for that. to me he was as much a philosopher as anything else. it's just one perspective of many. sure evolutionary psychology has it's own way of looking at the human brain and behavior. but I don't think any one school, or any one way of looking at things can ever give us all the answers.
ANYBODY who thinks human beings don't have instincts are either blind or stupid. it's so obvious!!! do these people REALLY think human beings are not still instinctual animals? what do they make of sex, just to name one thing out of many.
@mightyafrowhitey Replace instict with urge, you are right there are some things inborn, and that is sex, hunger, thirst etc. But the funny thing is, in our natural world there are so many organisms that do not have sex, never feel hungry the way we do and never drink water. Therefore, these things have naturally occured in some place in our evolutionary history. As far as I know, Evolution does not deny commonly held beliefs, it only explains them.
David Buss also changed my life. His class changed the trajectory of what I want to study :]

It's fascinating how humans' generalized behavior manifests itself as differing cultures. That's what I find most fascinating.

When it comes to learning about human behavior in courtship and other areas gender studies sucks!! but evolutionary psychology can seriously help.

I have no doubt that PZ Myers was the guy Dawkins was talking about at the start

@Iambecome Really? I thought he might have been talking about Peter Singer. (By the way, I'm an immense fan of Dawkins, Buss, Singer AND Myers.)
