  • great simply great

  • How did you get your hands on that? I've heard that one of those babies costs about a year's salary for most people.

  • @KroMcLovinFaSho

At the time this was recorded, I was using my schools contra. The one I have now I got as a birthday present. It cost about $1500, which is a full grand cheaper than a brand new one. You might be thinking of a professional model contrabass. One of those costs about $22000.

  • @Contra0 Haha dude thats great. I play Alto, Bass and Contra alto clarinet. Soon to be playing Contrabass. Im trying to audition for all-region on those 3 instruments. Any tips?

  • @monkeyfist54

I don't think I can give you any tips... You're probably already better than me if you're going for all-region.

  • Dude that was awesome nice to kno someone else plays the contra alto clarinet

  • I bet your lips were numb after this.

  • Hell yeah same here. Such a badass instrument. I wanna play Contrabass to see the difference between it and Contraalto

  • I like the sound of this clarinet! Good job :D

  • Being top bass clarinet this year, I will get to play the contra alto clarinet when there is a part close enough to the bass clarinet part.

@contra0 that must've been pretty interesting marching contra. In 8th grade we had one night on the field with the HS band. It was stand still for the whole show, and even that was awkward on bass clarinet. After that I learned tuba for MB.

  • @samosuband

HOLY CRAP DUDE! I'm Top Bass Clarinet for my HS band too, and I get to play Contra Alto :D

  • Yo ur amazing nice job

  • im playing contra alto next year, any tips

  • @43LIKEABOSS

Practice. That's pretty much all I can say.

  • i play bass clarinet in middle school band. i REALLY want to play contra alto. Any tips on persuading my band teacher?

  • @cprow10

Hmm I can't really say... I didn't even have to persuade my old band director. She just gave me the chance. Perhaps you could just ask your band teacher nicely? You'll probably end up doubling on bass and contra.

  • @Contra0 my band director doesnt really let anyone play it. so if i do get to. i would be pretty lucky.

  • @cprow10

Why doesn't he/she let anyone play it?

  • @Contra0 he xD and im really not sure. ive asked but never really got a specific answer.

  • @cprow10

Maybe you could say that you have a huge (and you're gonna need to ham it up) interest in playing it... Perhaps that will make him reconsider.

  • Contrabass clarinet represent here! Great stuff man! Gonna record this song one of these days and post!

  • Oh my... Dude, I am so jealous of your skill right now!!!! I want to learn this on my contra alto!!

  • i love the low reeds nice cover and nice clarinet the only complaint i have is that u didnt entirely follow the bari part other than that awsome

  • I c u peter on the tv lol

  • haha...i play the same thing , best instrument n the world! haha, but my band director wont let me march with it for whatever reason so i juss march with tuba and saxophone

  • This amazing! I just made all-state on alto clarinet, but contra is so much fun!

  • by the way, great job!

  • Hey, I dont mean to sound like a annoying brat or anything, but can you send me the notes or tell me where you go them. I got a few people(including myself) who want to do a few instrumentals of Streetlight Manifesto

  • @SuperRetardedWario

Unfortunately, I learned this song by ear and never wrote the notes down... Sorry.

  • I play Bb bass clarinet in junior high adv. band, is this much different?

  • @Skarmaniac9994

Not really... You only need to push more air through the horn. Once you get used to that, its a breeze.

  • @Contra0 You read the music exactly the same... but some music doesn't come with a piece, so you can play Tuba music, you just ignore the key signature and "transpose" it... but it's a lot of fun cause it's mostly in the lower notes.

  • I play Bb bass clarinet, do you think it would be easier for me to transition to this?

  • @MyMyoozik91 yes because it is the same fingering cause it is also a clarinet and its a low reed

  • This sounds beast. I think I'll have to get some stronger lungs before trying out this amazing instrument!

  • do you have the note???

  • FAM GUY !!!

  • Woo! I play contra alto clarinet! LOVE IT!!

  • Comment removed

  • holy crap, i would be too scared to play that! i would think it would try to eat me! its amazing! lol

  • Is the contra alto in treble or bass clef? cause i know bass clarinet is in treble.

  • @avenged7xguitar

Treble... But, contra players can easily read bass clef as well.

  • @Contra0 thats cuz any Eb instrument can read bass clef which i feel so lucky we can! all cuz a treble a is a concert c, thanks pianos!

  • the contra alto is so fun to play even though it doesnt get the fun melody parts in songs im 13 and i play it for my middle school advanced band XD

  • I've liked Contra-Alto in that you always had parts for it. Contrabass rarely had parts for it, which is why I didn't play it that much. Playing Tuba, String Bass, and this thing was just awesome in high school.

  • this is awesome!! keep it up!

  • you should post a video play smoke on the water on that thing

  • hey you sound great!!! im goin into my first year of high school, and up until now i've played bass clarinet and regular clarinet for marching. im supposed to start contra-alto in concert in september, anything important i should know in advance? thanks a bunch!

  • hahah, family guy's on the tv in the background :P

  • Dude i love this im gonna start to play that instument as a favor of my teacher... 2 questions tho

    Is it fun?

and do you have any tips???

  • @ContraClarinet123

Its only as fun as you make it. For concert pieces, don't expect to get a lot of melody or counter-melody. You'll most likely be playing the bassline and if you're fine with that, you can potentially have a lot of fun. It was more fun to march this thing to be honest.

As for tips, all I can say is practice. A lot. The contra alto is a different beast that any other clarinet and it takes a lot of air and a good embouchure to hit the lowest notes.

  • @Contra0 Thanks very much hahaha, my first day playing it today was awesome!!! i did get a bleeding blister where i have to hold it on my thumb.... but its all good.... ahahahaha and the music sheet i have to use is the Tuba part and i put sharps in it and read it as treble! And its super low and cool!!! Thanks again very much

  • Comment removed

  • @Contra0 but it still has the sme fingerings as bas sclarinet right? and is the contrabass clarinet bigger? cuz i might upgrade from bass to either contraalto or contra bass clarinet

  • @MrBarisax101

The contra clarinets have the same fingerings as all other clarinets and the contrabass clarinet is the largest clarinet in significant usage.

  • @ContraClarinet123 Contra0 is right it is a very fun instrument. I play mine at my middle school. Get ready to play tuba music all the time unless you get lucky heheh.

  • @trabidius321 yup my first day was amazing too i am just starting to play it for 8th grade and its sooo much fun!!! Ya i am playing a tuba part but we have a person that is a director at school that is associated with smartmusic so he was able to create a contra alto clarinet part for this song called " Synergies " this only difficult part is taking it home and to school haha

  • Comment removed

  • Wait, Woah woah woah. You MARCH Contra Alto?!

  • @narutofreak774

Not anymore. Not since I graduated high school. It was a fun experience.

  • @Contra0 Marched the Bari Sax here, Gotta love marching the Bass Woodwinds.

  • @T3c4x3r0 a contra alto technically falls into baritone range like the sax and horn

  • I like bass and all, but I still think Bb is the best

  • CONTRA IS THE BEST!!! ESPECIALLY WHEN A CHICK PLAYS IT :P :P XD lolz i also play contra dude. i am josy 13 years zup :P

  • Dude you should totally do the trumpet solo in the first part it would be beastly =)

  • I mainly play bass clarinet, but I love the attention I get from playing this one. Quote: "DANG! Thats a huge instrument man, thats amazing!" -from a metal lover. Speaking of metal, I own a straight bodied all metal contra alto.

  • @Strang3rDanger

Haha. I got a funny quote too. It was at a marching competition while my band was heading towards the warm-up zone. Some girl yells out (pretty loudly) "OMG!! YOU MARCH CONTRA?! I LOOOOOOVE YOU!" It was pretty hilarious.

And man, I wish I had an all-metal contra. I'm jealous!

  • @Contra0 Ha, niiice. I tried marching our show with my contra, nearly passed out. I normally march Bb clarinet becuase theres a huge shortage of them. I overpaid for my metal contra, but once I get the money to fix it up I probably will. I already bought a Walter Grabner mouthpiece for it.

  • haha, you were watching family guy

  • That is damn sexy.... I want you.

    Wait, no. Your clarinet.

  • I actually find the contra alto clarinet to be an easy responding instrument. I play bass clarinet currently, but will be switching to contra alto next year.

  • which brand and model of contra alto are you going to switch over to? cuz in this video it's sounded quite like a saxophone instead of a round, rich, solid clarinet...i dunno if it's because he's using sax reeds or what...it's seems unpleasant.

  • Comment removed

  • @MrRatedRplayer clarinet only has one T in it

  • thats as low as bari sax, which i play. go to my page to see videos

  • actually it's lower...i may be wrong, but i'm pretty sure low Bb on a bari is the same as a bass clarinet'slow Eb....please correct me if i;m wrong

  • @crazycardist actually a bari sax is low Eb to

  • @TheShadowwolf8 sorry i flagged the other comment by mistake. but if by "to" u meant "too" then yes i know, but bari is an Eb Instrument and bass clarinet in a Bb, so the key difference is that your low Bb is the same pitch as my low Eb.

sorry if i sound snippy. i didnt mean to

  • @crazycardist this is contra alto

  • @TheShadowwolf8 yea.i honestly dont know why i started talking about my bass clarinet.sorry

  • this is lower, so i suggest you get your musical facts straight

  • @barimanbari i suggest u shut ur mouth its not lower faggot of music

  • How is it not lower? a bari sax goes to a low a, or a c on bass clef, but this definitely goes below that. i've played one of these before and i know how the two compare.

  • @barimanbari a bari is low e flat a half octive lower

  • i personally like the contra alto clarinet than the bass clarinet

  • @wango911 me to

  • GOOD JOB

  • i play bass clarinett i wonder if they have same fingerings like bass and regular clarinett

  • Yes, the contra alto clarinet and bass clarinet both have the same fingerings. Contra alto is in the key of Eb and bass is in Bb though.

  • Dude. This is such a cool instrument. I am like, in love with the tone of it. Like WOW JUST AWESOME. SHIIT MAN!! It's such a unique sound.

  • dude that was a really GREAT job and i love the touch of the FAMILY GUY on your TV in the background!!!!!!! GREAT JOB! o and by the way i love that song!

  • holyy crappp!! :DD you officially win at life!!!

  • i play bass clarinet, bassoon and tenor saxophone the hardest of course is bassoon but that also looks hard

  • i wanna play! i just play the regular clarinet. D:

  • bari power i play bari in jazz band i used to play it for both concert ,marching and jazz but now i do bass clarinet for concert and marching ! love them both

  • nice awsome

  • nice built in speakers! and nice playing as well!

  • nice I play the baritone sax at school

  • @TheEcho71 GASP! MEE TOO! haha. I love playing bari, I personally think it's the greatest of saxes.

  • Nice instrument !

  • holy shit family guy is on!

  • I play this Instrument, very Impressive.

  • @zaccheus414

    You mean it sounds better

  • in this song do uthey use contra or bari cause bari doesnt sound that good with it but then again im not that good at distinguishing my own instrament just wondering and if u know the notes can u tell me cause i would really like to play this song

  • i want to play a contra alto clarinet or bari sax. i find low instruments are much fun to play.

  • oh absolutely, normal clarinet's fun but it's sometimes fun to get on a bass and play the main chords, very funky, just like this guy right here!

  • i'd go with a bari sax. bari sax's are boss. that's why i play one. if you do play one, good luck adn hope you enjoy it

  • is it hard to play? id like to know because i think they are boss too.

  • only the really low notes are like a low a# is pretty hard but other than that nope

  • cool ill start playing when i get one. on my alto i can play low Bb so i don't think that will be much of a problem

  • dang dude. thats pretty low. you do realize bari's are like $8,000 right?

  • i'll rent 1 first.

  • good call.

  • @boredomesucks232 um, only if you get ripped off. You could find a very good one for under 2000, easy.

  • lol i found a mint one for about 800.

  • @pianomancuber91 well i'm talking brand new yamaha. mine is black and awesome and sounds great lol.

  • Awesome! But with saxes, you really don't absolutely need to buy a top of the line one to get a great sound. I'm currently going doing undergrad work on clarinet and I'm also playing saxophone, and I can tell you right now that I'm REALLY suffering with a bad clarinet. I wish I could afford nice instruments.....A new Buffet R13 will cost $3000. A Buffet Prestige Bass Clarinet costs around $10000.

  • i wish i could afford them too

  • OOOOOH MY GOD HOW MANY CLARINETS IS DER i play simple clarinet

  • there are 5... I know the B flat is the second highest, followed by bass, contra alto, then contra bass... I'm not sure what the highest one is called

  • @pspgamerdude1

there are more than 5... the highest being the rare piccolo clarinet, then the sopranino, soprano, basset clarinet, basset-horn, alto, bass, contra alto, contrabass, and the two octocontras

  • @pspgamerdude1 Sopranino

  • I agree with this guy Bari Sax is a beassst. If you play clarinet or sax its easy to switch.

  • @audir1thenewone I like the tone richness and quality compare to higher pitched instruments!

  • So

    Contra Alto Clarinet is EEb

    Bass Clarinet is Bb

  • Comment removed

  • Ee flat

  • omg!! great player!

  • And this is why low range clarinets are awesome.

  • bad ass man

  • Hahahahahahaha this awesome

  • hey could you wright out your part on that and send it to me and i will transpose it?

  • Great job.

  • Hey I was wondering if I could some how get the sheet music for this. That would be awsome or tell where you got it from!

  • sorry... i did it all by ear

  • You're so awesome. I love both ska and low clarinets, yay!

I'm going to college for music and the school just bought a brand new Buffet prestige bass clarinet. It's absolutely beautiful.

  • im jealous... im trying to buy myself a bass clarinet but im on a severely limited budget: $500.... i found a decent one on Ebay... a Selmer Bundy but ehh.... its better than nothing

  • Very true. I personally own a Selmer 1430 student model. It's been good to me so far. I'm so psyched about the Buffet though. I'm the top bass clarinetist in the university so I'm the only one that gets to play it.

Good luck with getting a bass :)

  • is it a low C bass clarinet? i would love to play on one of those

  • I wish, but sadly it is not. I'm probably getting a bari sax in the next few weeks. I can't wait for that.

  • @sambc4lyfe I played a low c bass clarinet before. It was awesome :)

  • Dude, you can't even really buy a B-flat clarinet for five hundred dollars, unless you want like, a plastic Jupiter clarinet like my student used to play (shudder). Anyway, you're pretty good on that contralto clarinet--I've played B-flat, A, E-flat soprano, bass, and a little bit of alto, but never contralto.....but thanks for posting that video, it's a cool instrument. :)

  • you should join a metal band

  • nice. i'm using this to learn the song by ear on bari sax

  • badass =D

  • haha family guy behind :D

    he rulz the world.

And you've got some pretty tight skills there. Great job ;)

  • Awesome, you have an excellent tone.

  • This is soo awesome! Great job dude!!!!!

Have you done any other street light songs? Where did you find the sheet music?

  • nowhere... sorry man... all by ear

  • Agh.

    I love your tone.

    c:

This makes me miss Bertha, (The schools Contra)

    Great video.

  • woahz <3

  • What contra model is this? I'm looking to get one, and I'm curious.

  • I bought a clarinet contra alto...

can you tell me which blade you use?

    sorry for english ... a translator: D

    I am Brazilian

  • this is great! :D where'd you get the music? and is there a chance or getting the trumpet part?

  • thats the episode of family guy were peter and chris go for tans but chris goes in the time capsule by accident

  • you are an awesome clarinet player. i play the contra alto whenever i can too. his name is Beast and he belongs to my school, so i needa give him back up at the end of this year. but i love the sound out this instrument and you have a gorgeous tone. very nice. me and beast salute you

  • I used to make these things for 20 years before the company that bought us out (which shall remain nameless) closed us down. I enjoyed listening to you play! I miss hearing it live five days a week!

  • Wow this is amazing. You must have practiced this like crazy

  • i loove the beginning...it sounds soooo cool :D

  • What is on the TV in the background it looks like family guy.

  • read the info. it says right there. :]

  • omg thats so insanely amazing i play contra alto clarient too! =D and my current band teacher was in the original streetlight manifesto =D this is rele amazing. if you wrote out music it wud b awesome =] lol

  • wow

  • hey can you send the music for bass clarinet???

  • you should play that with a bari sax a duet

  • wow!!! i play the clarinet. and this is absoulutely awesome!!!!!!! great job!!!

  • this sounds cool on contra

  • -stands and applauds- That was amazing. I love playing the contra (alto!). I envy you.

  • noice! where do you get sheet music or do you even use it?

  • He did it by ear.

  • yoru amazing

  • wooow, i just discovered the contra alto clarinet...sweet. i never thought there was one between bass clarinet and contrabass, well, you learn something new every day

  • The contra alto always sounds kinda kairy and rough, but you manage to use that to your advantage! Amazing =]

  • this is really good...

  • you are very good. do they have any kind of symphonys where you live. if you do you should join one.

  • contra alto? hmmm, contralto!

  • the term "contralto" exists but its used for a woman's singing voice between tenor and mezzo-soprano

  • oh! thanks 4 letting me know!

  • omg!!! ive never heard of contra bass clarinet only bass and that was amazing!!!! keep it coming. good job. :D

  • OMG ur sooo good!! i want our skool to get a lower clarinet than bass cuz bass just isn't low enough, i love the sound, ur really good idk but then i've been playing a low F or G or anything lower it squeaks, Anyone have suggestions?

  • On bass clarinet, I had the same problem when I started. I kind of messed up my adv band audition, so the teacher told me I might want to switch to bass clarinet. I said yes obviously. Try using a softer reed or loosening your mouth. Or maybe the instrument needs adjustments.
