  • Yes, there is an inherent vowel in Thai letters... it sounds like "aw", as in "awning".

  • Thai are about 65% been copy from KHMER(Cambodian)! they didn't directly get from india

  • @CNCKK1 here we go again .....

  • Thai language is for whore.

  • @Juejue101 ไอ้ชาติชั่ว ปากระยำ

  • @Juejue101 no, no, no. You write it "whole". Learn some more English.

  • @marckami Well this is about Thai language anyways. Thai language has been influence from there neighbors and not the other way around like most Thai hypocrite claim to be.

  • @Juejue101 well does it matter? lose the ego, brother. this way you'll be happier.

  • @marckami Yes it matters in many ways. And it has many effect on its neighbors languages in a Thai language version. For example "Lao" in Thai is also a slur words to call someone lower then a dog. Thai's used this to refered to someone as a Lao and compare the entire race of Lao people to a inferior being. Maybe you should learn more about this problem and how selfish and snobby this generation of Thai's are in Society. And I'm not the only one who is realizing this issue going on now.

  • @Juejue101 I didn't know about this. You are right about that. Still, my point is that you needn't fight with what you feel is bad. Just ignore it. Fight only creates more hatred. If, for example, people from Czech Republic would make fun of Poland (my country), I would just ignore it.

  • @marckami Ignoring the problem doesn't help nor does it stop hate. It create even a bitter sensation of mockery. Also if you understand the issue going on between Lao and Thai issue then you would have a clear thought about my issue and how really bad it got in my generation. My parents or the old generation did choose to ignored the problem, but now we are experience for ourselves as they have in the past. Thai envy the Lao ethnic race and language to our culture for a very long time.

  • The gender difference in Thai isn't as difficult as it is in Spanish. Do not panic. In Thai, Bicycle is not a female and car is not a male. Its just that men call themselves "Phom" and female use "Chan" or "Dichan". And men uses "krab" to end sentences with politeness and women uses "kha".

As for the "ma, mah, maah, maaah, maaaah", our Thai teacher always taught us by making us sing it and it works!

  • me soo proud of asea

  • Actually, is there a small inaccuracy in this clip? Thai consonants can express a vowel sound without writing the vowel; it's an abugida script. A good example is ก็, which is simply a consonant plus a tonal marker. Otherwise, all consonants can have an implicit อ.

  • thai people have really long names lmao. i have a thai friend and her name is so long lol. spanish people have long names too :D

  • I studied Thai for five terms with Ajaan (Professor) Supa at UCLA from 2000 to 2002. I learned speaking, reading & the writing system. The first thing we learned in the beginning class was the difference in tone using the various pronounciations of the syllable "maa," just as in this video. To learn Thai, indeed, you need to learn the culture as well (exemplified by the "wai" gesture at the end of the video). Thai people are so gracious & charming. Truly a gentle and sweet culture.

  • 4 months no see. It's very great to hear your voice again. I didn't know that Thai and Vietnamese had something in common until I saw this video: Ma, Mà, Má, Mạ, Mả, Mã......... How interesting!

  • @nunoferreira555

All of the language choices they have are in French, but they have 9 choices that are for English speakers (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Hungarian). And they have other language base programs as well, but French is the original since it is a French company. But of course all you have to do is learn French really well and then you will be able to pick many languages offered by Assimil. =)

  • Sawatdee kha Professor, I am both interested and excited to skype with the Thai teacher from bangkok. I had done some thai language study using Linguaphone and the accent is similar to that of the teacher from Bangkok. I would like to continue with Thai language study. I like the sound of the language. khap khun kha. Please connect me with one of them. Merci beaucoup

  • Please skype me at "somchaipa"

  • @MsViviantan Sawatdee kha. My name is Parnthip. You can call me JUB. It's my pleasure to do skype wtih you but I never use skype before. I'll try to learn how to use it but after the end of July because I am busy preparing my workshop session. I guess you are a woman because you use the word "kha" See you.

  • hi ! You forgot 4 very good ressources to learn thai: méthode de thaï tome 1, méthode de thaï tome 2, pratique du thaï tome1 and pratique du thaï tome 2 ! All from asiathèque !

  • Very interesting for someone who really want to learn Thai Language. Should have version 2.

  • I have put a donation button on the "videos" page of my website for those who would care to contribute to the purchase of a better camera.

  • @ProfASAr To be honest, even the best camera will have issues with the frequency of the fluorescent light in that room and the drilling in the background.

  • I really admire the effort you put to make this video possible. I think it is useful for people who would like to study Thai.

  • This video is very interesting. It's one way for people to study language via You tube.

  • Learning spoken Thai is about as difficult as learning Chinese, at least in my experience. That means it is somewhat difficult and it's hard to make the vocab stick, at least harder than learning another European language... at least for English speakers.

  • It is true that Thai language is interesting and challenging. But I think it is not too difficult for you to learn it.

  • Is the Thai language very difficult for you? No. 7

  • Hello, your vedeo is very natural. Thai is very interesting language. Moreover, Thai culture is very interesting, too. So, if any people on earth want to visit Thailand, you should try to learn a liitle bit about Thai language. I reccomend it's very challenging.

    Kru Kittiya (Kru = teacher)

  • I'm overjoyed to see that you've continued making videos after the long break! Thanks for the super informative video -- I've been wanting to know a bit more about Thai for quite a while now. Hoping one day in the distant future I can study it, maybe through the famous "total immersion from scratch/no translations ever given" school somewhere in Thailand (offhand I can't remember the name!)

  • Did they give their skype addys? I'm here in Bangkok and want to do an English Thai language exchange.

  • very good I like it.

  • Excellent This is good for foreigners to learn Thai. Welcome to Thailand.

  • It's very interesting. The native speakers are from different parts of Thailand so you can hear the different dialects of Thai.

  • In the next 4 years i have to learn Chinese, Spanish and Italian... aaaahh!

  • @XtRekon Good luck, pal. That is simply impossible.

  • Spanish is not that difficult, i learned the language a bit when i was on Curacao. But Italian is, and Chinese?.. that's gonna take me 15 years haha.

  • @XtRekon italian's really easy if you know Spanish. Anything past either a Romance or Germanic language will be a lot more difficult, though :P

  • @XtRekon espanol es muy facil....

  • wow I love this video ! I'll chalange thai language after japanese and arabic (MSA fous7a). I hope you'll make a similar video about khmer language !

    Thanks !

  • Thanks for this new video! Having native speakers participate in your introductory series is an excellent idea. I just wish the camera would produce a better video quality: the text of the poem and the map appeared rather blurred.

  • Very interesting, I would like to learn more about the Thai alphabet.

  • Its refreshing to see other you with native speakers in your videos.

  • You mentioned we could contact the teachers for skype.

    How?

  • @volapuk49 Your name sounds like Thai. Are you?

  • @Parnthip1 Hi, I am not Thai however I am honored that you think the name sounds like Thai. Best wishes.

  • It never ceases to amaze me how tonal languages could ever exist.

    Excellent video, professor :-)

Btw. The camera work and zooming were good.

  • Research 'tonogenesis', I think you may find it fascinating to read about it.

  • @amjan I found English to have 10 syntactic tones (not semantic like these languages), so I believe you use a lot of tone in English. The current featured video on my channel introduces the tones.

  • It would be great if you could use a better camera... or at least superimpose a computer image of a map rather than just hold it in front of the camera.

Same goes for the written langauge...

    it's hard to read

  • oh yes, it also similar to cantonese.

1-10 and all the numbers (are almost all the same)

and many words also pronounce in similar.

  • and they are alot of thai family languages(probably more than 15 differents kinds of dialects.

and ofcuz if u speak thai u can traval to many countries. ex: south of china, laos, cambodia, malaysia, burma(in shan state).

so they are more than 120 millions who understand thai language.

  • actually thai is vsimilar to zhuang zu (壮族)

great: this actually u miss 1 dialect, which is also every important as the four parts of u had present, it is su-pan accent.

this dialect mostly speak in west of central.

  • Hey, thanks again! Your videos are extremely informative. But yeah, you should really buy a better camera.

  • Thanks for the awesome video!

  • lol funny stuff

  • 06:33 what was that?!

  • You have 4,000 subscribers. If everyone donates you $1, you'll be able to buy a HD camera.

  • hahahaha

  • yeah , I would love to donate $30 !

  • @korwinblue lol, i'd donate 2 LOL

  • all those "ma"s sound the same to me.

  • glad I'm not the only one. I kinda hear a difference from one end, to the other end, but can't hear the transition.

  • i really appreciate how you brought different people from different parts of Thailand.

  • the camera guy just really needs to zoom out for the while video

  • @nunoferreira555

    It's a bit tedious. I prefer Assimil.

  • 06:34

  • I think you need a better camera, lol. But its a nice video. I love linguistics so...yea this is kool.

  • I'm a language teacher, and I appreciate your collaboration with Thai teachers. Very interesting. Thanks.

  • Professor you amaze me dude!

  • wonderful, and very informative!
