Thanks, wickenden, for your positive comments. As far as " Leaning on the Everllasting Arms" being used in the soundtrack of True Grit, the movie makers chose the song because she did the song way before the movie was made. Some of the phrases at the end of this are titles to songs, which she credits on the CD. We each can choose what we like (or not) and listen to (or not). Her voice andl syle are different , but I don't want to listen to clones.
Actually, yes, she wrote the song, which is an appropriation of lyrics from those old gospel songs. Beautifully done, even to an old agnostic like me.
She's talking here about her mother, and her mother's desire to sing in the Grand Ol Opry, and about the nature of her love for her mother and her mother's hopes and religious sensibilities.
It doesn't matter if one believes or not to see the beauty of Iris' work here and elsewhere, or have the most human understanding of her love.
I like the music...I just wish they'd keep their RELIGION to themselves! It's like trying to listen to a song about Buddha or Allah. Just the music, please!
@thegrinchl7 But religion is fairly intrinsic to the song - Im sure Iris knew what she meant when she wrote the lyrics, so if you don't like the religious aspect, why listen to her music? Just for the pretty tune is suppose? Its like listening to christmas carols and saying you wish they'd kept their religion to themselves, but you still 'like the music'.
@inaband - While religion is indeed part of this culture, it is nevertheless, just somebody else's hobby. No disrespect intended but...much like somebody's passion in basketball or the latest reality TV episode, not all of us participate. This is what makes religion's involvement in government so painful. I don't want people with their superstitions making policy for me...nor do I want to hear their music. By the way, I don't think Iris Dement "wrote" this song. I believe it's an old hymnal.
This song makes me cry every single time. I miss you Mom.

@thegrinchl7 As she mentions at the beginning of this video, she did write this. Credit where due, and all.

@wchase62 - I was speaking of her HORRIFIC performance in "True Grit". The song On The Arms of the Everlasting Pig Squeal. Or, something like that.

@useahammer - Sorry, I guess I got carried away. I feel I do
a better job of tolerating differences than most. Here in Calif.
for example, we are overrun by Vietnamese. Millions of these
tiny squatting people with that discordant, shrill voice (like Iris
Dement"). They never heard of "When In Rome". They eat
our DOGS! Few of them learn English...none can drive. While
I wouldn't go out of my way to kill a Vietnamese, I would do
little to stop it. I swear, they're more like cockroaches.

I'm pretty sure this is reflective of her childhood not her current beliefs.

From what she said it was her church that put her off. No one else.
