this might be the single, greatest musical performance ever captured on tape... hyland's platinum-blonde mullet, pink under-tee, the vibrant "Little Darlin's" stage, the crisp/pristine/soaring vocals, the EXUBERANT crowd of elders, and the rhythm guitarist's sly boogie half-way through the song! FLAT-OUT INCREDIBLE! not to mention, one helluva song...
Yeah, Brian if you're reading this....you should sell this version on a cd on your website. It rocks. The cats backing you up sound fantastic. And I know this is from the ninties, but damn....it kicks butt. Thanks....joel in tucson
All I can say is...... I miss the Great music from the 60's and 70's.. Music nowadays is SHIT...it's not even music...they go in concert and mouth the words. plus the songs are no longer from the Heart. OH!! i miss throse days of the 60's, but thanks to U-Tube..I get to relive the GLORY Days of MUSIC
In our haste to dub this version or that version as the best, we forget that most great songs help us to remember great performers, not the other way around. This song has been covered by at least 50 different artists and groups. The covers actually increase the reach and appeal of great music, thus widening it's audience even more. My personal favorite was by the boss, Bruce Springsteen. But no matter, good music cannot be forgotten . . . .
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
cool, cool version here! del shannon produced the studio version, and that is one interesting recording! listen to it closely next time it's on the radio! great post, thanks!
While the Impressions version may be the benchmark.....Brian put a very fresh and contemporary sound to this song, which still holds up. Kudos! Nice performance!
I just got an e-mail from Brian yesterday, he's still doing great and knockin them out with the oldies but goodies, truly a legendary american pop idol.
Kind of hard to credit Brian Hyland as having the best version when he so closely copied the original 1963 recording by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions. To write a song and interpret it on record takes lots more skill and creativity than hearing someone's work and redoing it. The difference between doing a painting from a blank canvas and doing a reproduction.
Brian's studio version of this was THE BEST, blowin' any Impressions version out of the tub. However, the tempo here is way too fast, showing no love for the song.
@Tennisman81 Not kidding at all. If you don't like Brian's studio version, you must be kidding or tasteless. This version here is purty lame, but, I've seen the Impressions do some lame live stuff, as well. I talked with Curtis a coupla times while he was livin' in my hometown, he really liked Brian's version, as well.
This was one of the very first singles that I brought in 1970, ( I still have it, I was 14 at the time). I LOVE Brian's version of this 60's classic, but I think the studio version is THE BEST version, this version, does not have all those lovely swirling strings & cool effects. Peace Gary in PA USA
@gary56victor57 yes, this live performance shows that Brian still has the chops, but the record itself is perfectly magical. I was the same age as you, and it was one of the better things about 1970.
I was 11 yo when this great song came out. music is the one and only thing that sparks my memory when it comes to remembering anything prior to 15 yo. gypsy woman was playing during the credits to a movie or series I was watching and a flood of great memories came to me. just when I thought I've heard every one of my memory throw backs, along comes another. Thank you! thank you! thanj you! Brian.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You must be crazy to say something like that!! 99/99 % of the time, the original is always the best, because the person who created it knew what it was about. This is the first time I have ever seen this and I think it is hideous!!!!!!!
@flomurdock no crazier than you are perhaps you should listen to Bryan's recorded version from back in the 70s, I think your opinion might change unless your mind is filled with the trash they call music nowadays.
@flomurdock I agree. The Impressions' wonderful original has a much more sensual feel to it, and cannot be surpassed. It is of course a great song, which is why Bryan covered it.
@flomurdock You need to watch it at least 5 times and then you'll be hooked this performance. It is nothing like the original but is like a different song.
@hamslice15164, I suppose you're going to be 29 forever. You have no idea how soon you'll be 50. You'll be wondering what happened to your 30's and 40's. It won't be funny then, I assure you.
This place was in FLA & closed way back in 1992. There is a homepage for it. Type in Little Darlin's. Wolfman Jack owned it at the time it shut down. I'm with you. Looks like a rockin lace. Too bad it's not there anymore. This video was probably mid 80's or so. Del Shannon has a couple on YT that is also from there.
ok I am not REALLY OLD but this song just has that something like when I would go out to dance and just knew that the night would be great I like the original that is slower with more mystery
Hey Pornguy2, i went to I Tunes to listen to Mayfield's version and I watched a You Tube video of Curtis doing the song and I can't agree with you. Hyland's version is better. But, the Curtis Mayfield You Tube video is great as well. His band in that video is really good. In any event, thank God for You Tube because both versions are really good.
This song is my all time favorite from Brian Hyland.
Hey Roppersgirl: Sorry to hear that who you considered to be an "angel" ended up braking your heart at the end. A man making such sweet dedications should live up to his words. You sound like you have a heart of gold. Wouldn't mind if you danced for me some time. Interested in Navy Seals?
actually, Hyland did a remake of this song. The original was done and written by Curtis Mayfield. But I like Hyland's version better myself; which was produced by Del Shannon.
I had never heard this song before, until recently, when it was dedicated to me by an "angel" that came into my life. Since then, it has become my signature song.
This "angel" lives in my broken heart. He was the spark in my eyes.
He's a US Marine, a hunter, a ropper, a cowboy, a PI, a hero, a legacy in my life. He was my vidiroo, my everything. All that he left behind is this song to remember him by. This Gypsy will dance around a camp fire some night, too bad it wont be for him.
I saw Bryan perform 10 years ago at a festival with other 60's & 70's acts, and he was incredible. There were people there of all ages, and when Bryan came on i'm sure many of them had no idea who he was. After the first song the crowd went nuts, this guy still sounded like he was in his 20's, but with an excellent band backing him. He looked really good too. He came back for 3 encores because the crowd went crazy. He was the best act, and there were some great ones.
I don't no why but this song reminds me of me,Maybe because I am a GypsyWomen kind of. Love to Dance around the campfire, with music, and I hate to wear shoes.Smile & Peace
My favorite version of this tune for sure. But not original. The song was done by Curtis Mayfield and the Impressions first. Bryan's version was a remake. As they say on Idol, he made this song his own. Still the most recognized version and my favorite.
....Very good live version of this beautiful 60's soul classic, that Mr. Brian Hyland remade in 1970 & had a big Top ten hit with. I remember hearing on AM radio, (77 NYC) & ran out to the local Sam Goody's record shop & brought the 45rpm (..I think is was about .69, or .79 cents back then.) I still have this single & it's a all-time 70's pop classic!! Truly brilliant & totally timeless!!
I think this version kicks butt! So glad you posted it...so glad to have heard it! Thanks for posting. I really like the first 1:10 or so...then I'm not as excited for the remainder. I wonder where ol' Brian is these days. Anybody know? Joel in Tucson
