Awwwwwwww, Rakim's flow is faultless. This brother's face should be carved on the side of Mount Rushmore. Many may follow, but the leader leads...word to Daddy, indeed
It's a shame to know that this man is still alive, but people fail to remember to bring his name up in hip-hop convos. When he dies, that's when all of a sudden people will realize what they had..smh
Damn so rappers tend to be so sloppy when they freestyle, where they just spit lyrics unconcerned with the beat and rhythm, but Rakim is one of the only MC's who can do it so clean.
IMO, with all due respect to biggie & 2pac & all the other MCs out there, when Rakim came out he was the difference between old & new school. His voice was ominous, his rhymes were lessons & his delivery was like bullets from an Uzi. He was to hip hop what jimi Hendrix was to rock, once you saw him there was no turning back. Without question THE greatest MC of all time
@honeegrrl: That's anyone's guess - but as far as real Hip-Hop heads are concerned, Rakim Is the most wicked and most on-point brother to bless a mic. Much of these "awards" are all name-for-name-sake industry-related bullshit. Rakim still rips shows like it was 1986 - in fact, he's surgically sharp and certifiably dope - I've seen cats only 18 yrs old and younger hold their jaws, mesmerized at what they were seeing and hearing. Rakim isn't called God MC for nothing!!
the days when we had real mc's, not the digital bullshit today...my 2 cents, 90% of todays rap is fuckin caca..suckas need to get back to the real roots of rap...
I laughed the shit out a myself when i heard: Blow ur entire empire on fire now gimme back the mic without a wire! AMAZING FREESTYLE MAN! Rakim is fucking awesome!
@imtheFreshest my bad. i def didn't expound what i meant & was wasted. 'swag' makes me fkin sick. most of 'hip hop' today embodies it. hip-hop's a beauty pageant now. way back i don't remember legend mc's eatin cuz of white ppl. now, suburb white kids/hipsters; they put food on these beauty queens plates.
i remember G Rap wore scuffed Tims...by choice. shit, Das EFX BRAGGED a/b bein gutter. rakim's wearin the same bodega beanie now he did in '86
@imtheFreshest & thx for callin me out. i hate bringin race into shit. i'm not usually that dude
i've had disdain w/ the superficiality of white people my whole life. it ain't consuming me by any means, but i've noticed it's more prominent with them than my minority fam. i gotta "little" authority on the subject..i'm a whiteboy from the midwest 'burbs.
i was the polar opposite of OG mc's. still am. they opened my mind in a way nothing else could. i miss this era, but it'll always live. peace
@Graenelolz Anything that takes effort and passion is real hip hop to me. MC' that put emotion and their talent to work. Guys like NaS, Kendrick Lamar, Big L , Big K.R.I.T, Rakim, Jedi Mind Tricks , Common, Atmosphere and many more.
This explains why no rappers old school or new, never publicly dissed Rakim cause they know he's the greatest to ever hit the studio or at least I never knew about it. They know he would fire back and make them sick to the stomach!
hip hop was better with rope chains and dice games kids on the block with a writing pad and pipe dreams the good old days in wich i grew up where a boom box and dime bag was always enough, nowadays i look at the sweet bitch i called rap and realize shes getting old man shes starting to sag her memorys fading and shes more than played out i wonder what woulda happened if lil wayne aint came out needless to say its a crying shame that nowadays real hip hop is a dying game.......
All I'm askin is can somebody listen to my music plz... It is so hard to get views since everybody wants to be a rapper lol..but seriously i'm dedicated and I know you heard this from a lot of youtube rappers..but plz check it out and If it sucks let me know in all Honesty... Thank you
@feetcreamer Freestyle to a lot of people simply means a bunch of bars you might've wrote that aren't about any particular subject, which is what this probably was. To me, that's kicking a rhyme. I only consider it freestyling if it's completely off the top of someone's head, which is starting to become an extremely rare ability by most mainstream rappers and even a lot of the underground MCs. Yet another reason why they continue to say "hip hop is dead."

Rakim comes through 100% - a sick, incomparable, unmatched brother - the Ali of Hip--Hop; he's just off-the-ropes on-point! The 18th Letter is faultless, and so is The Master album. Just his flow, use of metaphores, the ability to flow on a beat like a crest of some perfect wave - each time I listen to this brother, the more I understand why he's given the HIGHEST title in the game, one which cannot be eclipsed: "God MC".
its good to see tht the concensuss is the same throughout fuck these new cats back in the day is where it went down and its still as strong today henry rollins bless hip hop

fuck the radio and MTV, the underground has the best hip-hop remember that.
@TheDennis Lil Wayne will never b able 2 create like Ra, he's from da south, dere eduational level is far behind, I lived dere 4 sum yrs, Ra was way b 4 his time, and had knowledge of self, sumthin' da south dont get, still on dat Jim Crow level!!!! A!!!! It iz wut it iz!!!!!! Real talk!!!!!
Rakim is so sick, so slick, so damn unbelievably talented, it's crazy! Just bananas. Seriously, this brother has the flow, the metaphores, the deep brain-melting scriptures to turn any mc on their ass. God MC, NO COMPETITION!
@MrJazzHOP My thoughts exactly. Rakim is freaking AWESOME! I so love how youtube took me hear after hearing Mos Def go bananas in them freestyles. After hearing Lupe Fiasco smash a freestyle....after hearing Jay Electronica kill these beats....after hearing Talib Kweli freestyle.... after the hearing Jean Grae freestyle....I love real hiphop so much. I can listen to these cats forever.
@Z1986 Right not am mc you know the difference I see true indeed! Wayne is to be mentioned in the circle of mc's. I have a little song about him called broken swords check it out ya heard! Peace!
@Mavric7788 Rakim would destroy every rapper that came before or since. LL cool j, RUN-DMC, kane, public enemy, 2pac, biggie, eminem. He'd destroy them all cos they all took something from him.
i completely agree. The purity of hip hop has faded away and is only alive underground. I've recently released my tape "henomenal: No College Required" so take a minute to hear me out. No cursing, no degrading woman, just beautiful beats and nice lyrics with a flawless flow. Hope you enjoy the songs. Real Hip Hop is all about expressing one's self. peace n luv

@TheDennisFrogman
i completely agree. The purity of hip hop has faded away and is only alive underground. I've recently released my tape "henomenal: No College Required" so take a minute to hear me out. No cursing, no degrading woman, just beautiful beats and nice lyrics with a flawless flow. Hope you enjoy the songs. Real Hip Hop is all about expressing one's self. peace n luv
