I think "Southern Man" is more of an attack on all racism than simply a pointed attack on the southern US The Canadian prairies (where both Neil and I grew up) are terrible for racism, especially against aborigianl people. I grew up in a little one-horse town, and the racism there was pretty damn ugly. Neil Young writes songs that relate to him, and that's what makes him such a great musician.

Well, no, that was really more eastern and and Atlantic Canada where that happened; there really isn't that many blacks living in the prairies. The racism against them is definetely still there, though. I don't mean just racism against blacks, I mean all racism. Racism is ridiculous, and I think that's what Southern Man, at its core, is really about.
