If I had to choose pets, I would probably choose cats, but these days, I'm trying not to use animals as a substitute for human connection. I know for some Aspies, it's hard to relate and connect. I've certainly grown paranoid and a teensy bit hateful of people I don't know, and that's been my problem. Everytime I try to get to know people who seem interesting, they hardly ever follow through. I guess that doesn't really stop me trying.
While I certainly love all animals, I must also admit that cats have a special place in my heart. I think that other animals that are very dependent, such as dogs, feed to some type of human ego. Humans want to feel that something/someone loves/needs/relies on them, so animals, like dogs, that need to be cared for, make people feel important or needed. I love a cat's independence, its purring, the feel of its tongue on my fingers, its litheness. A cat is the perfect, unique home bred hunter.
I'm an aspie and I love cats but I love all animals, I have a cat and he's quite interesting, in the past I had a cat that loved to hug and cuddle but the current one is more distant.
CATch you later, was that an intentional pun? I've been diagnosed with Aspergers and have always been fascinated by cats. I like animals in general but I feel an afinity to cats that I don't feel for anything else. My personal view is that cats perceive the world around them on a similar sensory level to people with Aspergers so we can relate. (i.e. aversion to loud noises, large groups of people and can be fascinated by a single thing to the exclusion of all else). however, it just an opinion
I've loved cats since i was little, and really enjoy learning about them. I'm really into Ancient Egyptian mythology, so obviously Bastet has become one of my favourite goddesses! Catwoman is one of my favourite comic characters. I love being with a cat, it makes me feel calm and relaxed - I could quite happily sit for ages in silence or listening to music with my mum's cat in my lap :) Whenever I got to her house now, I always have to make sure I say hi to the cat!
Industrial American culture also contains a number of highly unatural features that make it go beyond neurotypical; ie most normal members of other cultures, and not just aspies or nonhumans (like cats) find them objectionable. The mandatory, predatory, threatening, dominating eye contact. The constant lying and manipulation glorified as "social skills" The shameless double standards, double think, and lack of concern for logic or ethics....
cats respond to respect and kindness with respect and kindness. Neurotypical humans dont (read some phychology books if you can't observe life for yourself; humans, like dogs, often respond very positively to behavior and autistic human or a cat would consider inexcusable abuse. Just look up Stockholm syndrome or read a book on abusive relationships.) Normal humans are concerned with social domination and position, often seemingly to the exclusion of any other thought. Cats & I feel differently.
interesting. i don;t like cats. but I LOVE dogs. I have two dogs (cavialier king charles spaniels) and i'm always holding them like babies and smothering their faces into my face becuase I liek to hear their snorting and breathing. this sort of dog breed is PERFECT for aspies who love dogs.

I'm a guy with Aspergers and cats are one of the animals I'm comfortable around. I recently joined a Pagan club and we went to this girl's house for a familiar ritual. A familiar is a animal you spiritually connect with and the animal I immediately picked was one of the cats. The cat was very anxious and I was one of the few humans he connected with.
I believe I have aspergers or a form of it and I do love cats the way they behave. They act very differently than dogs which sets them apart. Most of the aspergers that I know through the web do love cats.
I am 18, I have asperges syndrome and dyscalcula and I see this world as full of dead people like all I see is dead people. the only thing that keeps me calm is thinking about blood or violence.
I have Asperger's and am 26 years old. Cats calm me down instantly when I am having one of my meltdowns...which is why we have always had cats my whole life. Dogs worsen my anxiety, as they jump all over me and never cease to let me be. If I go to someone's house and they have a cat, I lose all attention in the host and play with the cat...people often consider this rude, but I just can't help how wonderful cats make me feel as opposed to humans.
@AspergersGirl I have AS, and I,m a cat person too. Tony Attwood ( author of the Complete Guide to Aspergers Syndrome ) has an interesting definition of a cat. He says a cat is like a dog with autism. How cool is that, now I consider my cat to be my furry little autistic child.
hi aspergersgirl. i love my cat Mika, she's a russian blue. cats seem to really relate to people with a ASD disorder, i have aspergers. i love her soft fur, how she meows/purrs. im not much of a dog person.
i love holding my cat, and don't like leaving my cat's side at all.
i love your video's aspergersgirl!! keep making them! you are very beautiful!
I have AS and epilepsy, but the depth perception issues that coincide with simple-partial seizures make pets look REALLLLY BIG. So they generally freak me out.

[It's a lhasa apso btw.]
I have just recently discovered Asperger's Syndrome because my friend has always been very 'odd' and I decided to do some research. I can now definitely say that he has this syndrome because he absolutely loves cats, and only cats.
For me its a couple of things. One is that, I understand their language, whilst, with Humans, I just... Don't. Not really. I connect with cats better than I do people. Plus, they don't lie. They're so brutally honest. If they don't like something, you'll know! And, so many other reasons...
I love watching your vids. So many times I watch and I'm like, "Yeah, I get that, too!" Its nice to relate to other people. Kinda makes you know you're not alone. Y'know?
We once had a Maine Coon who followed us around the house, purred constantly with a sound like that of heavy machinery, and let my little sister dress him in doll clothes. Just because they don't throw themselves at you, like a dog, doesn't mean they don't want to be friends.
Potentially a young Aspie (I'm going back to the doctor for testing and evaluation during my next school break). In the past 22 years, my parents have had the same number of cats! I love them - they are always very unique, and personable. And they're far from aloof or independent all the time - all it takes is an open book or laptop, and a cat will come and sit on it and demand attention!
I personally feel a kind of empathetic 'connection' with many animals and find them easy to relate to. And that's without getting all anthropomophic about them! I try to respect their innate cat or dog or rat or duck-ness, while paying attention to what they are 'saying' on their own terms - and in their own time. With any relationship it takes time to build trust, become familiar with each other's quirks and ultimately become comfortable enough to show our true natures.
i like cats and have AS only i am alergic so that realy sux, its true animals do help all who r autistic n have any ASD, i myself have two horses n when stressed i spend time with animals
@killuhsanchez33 I'm also highly allergic to cats (not that it ever stopped me) and they trigger my asthma as well. But my entire current Borg of felines were fixed before they reached sexual maturity, and they don't affect me like all my others have before them. They are also Maine Coons, a breed with lower allergy issues. Just wanted to throw it out there for you to maybe check into.
All the comments on this video are fascinating to read.
My got my cat when I was about ten. She would claw anyone who randomly petted her, when she wasn't expecting it - including me.
By the time I was 15, she would come to me and happily fall asleep on my chest, under the duvet, purring away.
I was a veggie and always hated touching meat, especially cat food, so I never fed her. (my mum used to put her food out). (I used to sometimes give her dry bisc
I /love/ cats- my old cat Bobbi (R.I.P) was my best friend growing up, even better than any human friend. She never made fun of me or shunned me and put up with me playing a little too rough with her- she was a very patient cat!
I have AS and adore cats, so much so that I'll even begin mimicking certain sounds they make, or pet them excessively until I receive a not-so-subtle claw to the face to suggest I need to back off. Does anybody else with AS do this, or is it just me? I ask this because I was only recently diagnosed with mild AS and am as yet ignorant to the little known quirks of the disorder.
I love my cat Yukimura. Got her for 2.5 years now and I love her to bits!!! We use her as a positive image when doing EMDR therapy. EMDR is really helping me a load! I walk her outside on a leash once a day.

i'm a guy with AS and i have always felt prrrfectly comfortable only with cats especially, but also with other animals (not humans, of course)... with regard to cats specifically, i love their wackyness/ i love the feel of their fir/ i love the purring (i'm 50 now, but is used to bury my face in the cats side when it purred and feel the vibration through my whole face.. never got enough of that!)/ i love their silent movement and they don't care if you look at them when u talk!! ^..^
@hawkdreaming I have aspergers aswell and im 13 years. but i love doggies abit more. as i feel they love and care abit more. but as do i care for other animals very much. allways did. i was diagnosed with aspergers about a year a half ago and im proud of it.
I'm a young woman with aspergers and I adore cats. In the past 22 years my parents have had at least 9 cats (counting the 3 that we have currently) and when I move out I definitely plan to have one of my own. Truly delightful creatures.
This may be irrelevant to cats, but as autistic/Aspergers children are often regarded as amazing,do you think even as adults,we are still mentally children?Just an interesting thought.
I have Asperger's Syndrome and I also really like cats. I like a pet that will just lay with me and make weird cat noises lol. I like dogs as an animal as well, but in practice they are too loud and smelly for me to truly be comfortable with them.
I have PDD-NOS and I have also been very interested in cats my entire life. I currently have four of them. I have to say that I can relate with many of the things that you had to say about them and how they are connected\ to autism. Keep up the good work.
I'm sure I have Asperger's, although I haven't been formally diagnosed. I agree with everything you said about cats! I have 13 cats. Their personalities differ greatly, and I love them all. Thank you so much for making this video.
I'm pretty sure I have AS and will be talking to a therapist about it as soon as I can. It's nice to see that there are genuinely beautiful people out there with this syndrome. Both inside and out. :)
i hate cats, they are selfish. They will smother a baby to death because it will be jelous of the attention it gets. They are sneaky, They really dont care about you they are selfish animals. Dogs are far better
@Insurgent999 PIFFLE! I have 13 cats and they all adore me....and I adore them. One plays fetch like a dog, another cannot let me out of her sight....one shakes hands and does tricks, and the list goes on. My latest rescue sleeps at my side between me and my husband...and covers me with raspy cat-kisses. They do NOT smother babies..that is an OLD WIVES tale from the middle ages. I also have dogs...and parrots..and a horse. I love them all, and there is no comparing each species. Peace...
If I were to have a pet, it would likely be a cat but my sinuses don't like cats as much as I do. And hairless cats are just evil. Perhaps when someone invents a way to make benadryl that lasts forever I'll get one, but until then I can't.
@AspergersGirl ignore that ignoramus. Only YOU know if you have AS or not! Remember it's not so obvious in girls, especially when we are BY OURSELVES in our room talking to a camera!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
They're boring, "a-social", apathetic creatures that could care less whether or not you're alive unless it affects their survival. Also, I find their anatomy to be a bit repulsive.
@CabbageNappa Either you are a troll, or your sad apathetic attitude towards a very social creature is a little autistic. I find it ironic that so many neurotypicals demonstrate a lack of empathy and a non-ability to 'read' animals when clearly they are communicating all the time. Just because you miss a cats' friendly overtures and attempts to communicate, because you're blind to them, doesn't make them antisocial.... it just means YOU lack the skills to reciprocate.
Also, they give up on those communication attempts when they realise the human is not responding. That might appear as if they couldn't care less if you're alive... who could blame them? I gotta give cats full credit for knowing when someone's not worth their time. To me it means they are smarter than the dullard who didn't understand them... and makes them a darn good judge of character.
I wonder whether the connection aspies have with cats has a little to do with having empathy with a creature that is so often misunderstood. Unlike a dog (which is more like your average NT), its communication skillset is subtle and takes more intelligence to decipher. When it comes to unique and interesting personality, a considered and quietly analytical approach to life and depth of intelligence... give me a cat (or an aspie) anyday!
@Ben28052001 I've theorized along those lines myself, Ben. As well as on that idea that dogs are NT and cats are aspie. Also your reply below to CabbageNappa is brilliant and spot-on.
@Ben28052001 Ouch so much hostility in this comment. if it was directed to me...ouch! Maybe he had bad experiences with cats in her/his childhood ? Have you ever been clawed by a cat you tried to pet. Yes I agree with you on this point: I am too disgusted by the lack of empathy that some neurotypicals show toward animals in general(thinking to my father). Believe me, I value as much the life of my furry friends as the ones of...you know...my fellow humans.
@CabbageNappa Hello..I think that a predetermination has created a distance with you and cats. The great news is... that if you open yourself to the possibility that cats are reciprocative creatures, you may experience the joy of their affection and company. My cat of 13 years, attached to me exclusively! for 9 years no-one even knew I had a cat, it never came out in company. (Could be AS), but would cuddle when we were alone. It has opened up alot, and now the whole family enjoys her company.
@CabbageNappa ''They're boring, "a-social", apathetic creatures that could care less whether or not you're alive unless it affects their survival. Also, I find their anatomy to be a bit repulsive.'' Yes...YES! I could not have say it in a better way! Dogs ftw! Rookie and Snoopy , they will never let me down!
I like cats. Not to the point of obsession, thought. The problem is I'm allergic to the cats that aren't hypoallergenic. I also might have a mild case of Asperger's.
Sorry, but I'm not a cat person (probably cause I'm allergic to them). I'm more of a dog man myself. The only cat that I like is Garfield (the cartoon cat).
I am an undiagnosed aspie. I love both my kitties & doggies! Hard to say which one I like more. I currently have 3 cat & 2 dogs (and a wife and 2 kids). One of the cats sleep with me all the time. Cats & dogs are such good pets and always put me in a better mood!
I actually like dogs better and I am fairly certain I have AS, although I have not been officially diagnosed. I am allergic to cats, so dogs are a much better option for me. Although I do enjoy the calmness of cats.
I'm really glad you came out and were open and joyful expressing our love of cats. Cats are incredible and there's no shame in being obsessed with them. :P
I actually prefer dogs, and I have AS. My roomie has a cat. He whines about everything. The only thing fun is making him chase a laser. He'll pounce on anything.
hello, i sent you a video about PTSD and ASPERGERS> and i speak cat.. i do! :) i have my cats in between this morning show at about 7 min into i thinK? I have a werid way of teaching.. maybe you can help me and a girl namd Jennifer Lynn Kennedy on youtube? she sew quilts and has ptsd and aspergers. i met her online like a weekk ago and can tell what she is trying to say! will yu listen and help us teach?? we dont have crediblity like you :) xoxo <3 but we have good hears and are SEW REAL.
I LOVE CATS!!!! :) I have lots of cat stuff ... i will show you in video.. just give me a couple days : MAYBEE u never know with me.. I cant live without a kitty. i miss my cats that are gone, like ppl. like chhildren. xoxoxo
I have aspergers, and I have 4 cats... but I hate them. They're only here because my wife loves them. I don't like animals at all, but I do admire some of their designs, such as insects and yellyfish and such.
I have asperger's, and although I do like cats a lot, I prefer dogs. I've never been obsessed with cats in any way, shape, or form. Also, turtles have always been my favorite animal, but again, I was never obsessed with them. I've never owned one either, and I wouldn't want to because it shortens their lives. Certain animals just aren't made to be pets.
@JMFSpike I feel the same, although I have more in common with cats, and I love both cats and dogs, I am a HUGE dog person. I thinks it's wonderful that they're always happy to see you and they always want your attention
@Papanda1995 Yeah, most cats could really care less about you. As long as someone gives them food and water they're pretty much just fine on their own, although they do like the occassional attention.
Fiona, you are luckier then most. You are very attractive and obviously intelligent. I am probably less intelligent than you and have suffered from severe depression for a number of years. I'm sure I have some aspects of Asperger's although I have never been diagnosed. Hence it's really hard for me.
Interesting! :) I like cats - I've got one elderly cat called Chloe. I love her because she has been a great companion to me whilst I was growing up - they are certainly great for companionship. There is a fantastic book called 'All Cats Have Asperger's Syndrome' by Kathy Hoopman, which suggests that aspie traits are present in cats - it's humourous. Great video! :)
We once had a Maine Coon who followed us around the house, purred constantly with a sound like that of heavy machinery, and let my little sister dress him in doll clothes. Just because they don't throw themselves at you, like a dog, doesn't mean they don't want to be friends.
TowerPrinces1483 6 months ago

It's so annoying how my cats always want to be outdoors just because of the heat, instead of sitting on me.
MargeSimpson20 7 months ago
I have AS and adore cats, so much so that I'll even begin mimicking certain sounds they make, or pet them excessively until I receive a not-so-subtle claw to the face to suggest I need to back off. Does anybody else with AS do this, or is it just me? I ask this because I was only recently diagnosed with mild AS and am as yet ignorant to the little known quirks of the disorder.

jg2480 7 months ago
@CabbageNappa Either you are a troll, or your sad apathetic attitude towards a very social creature is a little autistic. I find it ironic that so many neurotypicals demonstrate a lack of empathy and a non-ability to 'read' animals when clearly they are communicating all the time. Just because you miss a cats' friendly overtures and attempts to communicate, because you're blind to them, doesn't make them antisocial.... it just means YOU lack the skills to reciprocate.
Ben28052001 7 months ago 12
Also, they give up on those communication attempts when they realise the human is not responding. That might appear as if they couldn't care less if you're alive... who could blame them? I gotta give cats full credit for knowing when someone's not worth their time. To me it means they are smarter than the dullard who didn't understand them... and makes them a darn good judge of character.
Ben28052001 7 months ago 2
I wonder whether the connection aspies have with cats has a little to do with having empathy with a creature that is so often misunderstood. Unlike a dog (which is more like your average NT), its communication skillset is subtle and takes more intelligence to decipher. When it comes to unique and interesting personality, a considered and quietly analytical approach to life and depth of intelligence... give me a cat (or an aspie) anyday!
Ben28052001 7 months ago

UnsuccessfulLobotomy 6 months ago
@CabbageNappa Hello..I think that a predetermination has created a distance with you and cats. The great news is... that if you open yourself to the possibility that cats are reciprocative creatures, you may experience the joy of their affection and company. My cat of 13 years, attached to me exclusively! for 9 years no-one even knew I had a cat, it never came out in company. (Could be AS), but would cuddle when we were alone. It has opened up alot, and now the whole family enjoys her company.

I'm thinking around 1998 - 1999 it will be in these notes if I go through them all, But I am pretty sure I as 13 years old at the time.
Prior to diagnosis I had a lot of coucilling sessions with parents and myself and a pshychologist Dr Chris McAlpine.
If you want to fly to NZ to read them you're welcome. I have nothing to hide.

Also, turtles have always been my favorite animal, but again, I was never obsessed with them. I've never owned one either, and I wouldn't want to because it shortens their lives. Certain animals just aren't made to be pets.

There is a fantastic book called 'All Cats Have Asperger's Syndrome' by Kathy Hoopman, which suggests that aspie traits are present in cats - it's humourous. Great video! :)
