Any idea what rear axle this is using? Im building something similar but would like to keep the independant rear suspension rather than switching to a ford 9 inch.
The gentleman in the video built this car himself, there's no 'guys' about it (i.e. just to further drive the point home that National Speed did not build this car). He's quite a skilled individual.
Its all about volumetric efficiency. Once you've got a super slick intake system and you are getting 100% VE you have two options. Rev it higher, or increase displacement.
General Motors won a baja race with a highly modified naturally aspirated Atlas LL8 inline 6 4.2L (bored and stroked to 5L) trailblazer motor. Made 600hp if i recall.
Once you add a turbo the game changes. Guys where making 600hp+ in the 80s with Buick 3.8L pushrod V6 motors (which weights 200lb less then what a supra motor weights).
Self Racing makes huge N/A power out of a 4.2 vortec inline six and there was some Baja trucks back in the early 2000s with the same vortec beating other trophy trucks on all motor same racing team had a pikes peak version that did awsome too poth were based on the Trailblazer and Envoys that the motor cam with stock
dstipek: Difference between an RB26DETT making 600hp and an SBC V8 making 600hp is torque, specifically bottom end of the power band. V8s, particularly the Chevy, make peak power much lower in the power-band than L6s. For an RB making 600hp, I guarantee you it's going to be very top-endy. You must consider certain very important factors: smaller displacement = lower torque. The RB can rev higher, but that's to overcome the torque disadvantage, which moves peak-power much further up in the band.
I love how many people complain about a z car being somebody elses car. If you don't like the car, buy it, and change it back. HYBRIDZ FOR THE WIN! That car is a very well built car.
and its not all about the weight, its about placement of the motor, heres an example.
Most audi's: Horrible understeer, why? because they place there motors as close as they can to the radiator, putting mass infront of the front strut towers creates horrible understeer. Z cars on the other hand have the weight centered behind the strut towers as close as they can be to the firewall, making handling excellent, that was a main selling point to buyers in the modern era of race car drivers.
I can personally vouch for this; I had a 2002 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro MT5. The car pushed in tight turns like no other, but at higher speed turns it was very well planted.
1dabest what are you talking about lol. there are many 300whp Z cars that run without turbos, Triple Mikuni 44mm carburetors and tuning can do that...
and the statement that claimed "that car cant be any fun with a V8, it wont be able to turn, but on the straights it'll be fun." Thats false. A 383 stroker only adds 200lbs to the final weight of the vehicle when swapped in a stock 280z, so when you have a fully gutted track prepped Z car with an SBC in it, it will weigh less than stock
i agree with ZedxElite it seems like he knows what hes talking about, theirs only z with a l28 none turbo make over 300hp but thats not accurate and its owned by a japanese guy, im thinking of doing a SBC swap to mine 260z
No your being a bit ignorant. Anyone can build a stock inline 6 and make it just as fast or faster then a v8. I wasnt dissing your damn car man. I love Z's since I own one. Anyways it was just my opinion. Never said I hated v8's too... Have a good one.
I'm telling you, a small-block Chevrolet will always be able to make more power than an L-Series engine on motor (not saying it will always be more powerful, but it has far greater potential).
I'm all for various platforms (please see my videos), but in this case, the 383 SBC is the way to go for his power goal.
Please show me any L-Series engine that can make 700whp all motor, and then I'll be quiet (not saying this 240Z has 700whp).
i dont see why your so worked up about this, but ok. You can't be so single minded and believe that there is NO way a six cylinder inline engine can be just as powerful as a small black v8 lol.... Just look it up on youtube or google, it doesnt have to be a stock L24/6/8, it can easily be a twin turbo RB26DETT or something of that sort. Geez...
Did you miss the rather important portion of my message; "ALL MOTOR."
I'm aware of what 6-cylinder engines can produce... Hell, right now we've got a 700whp Supra, R32 GTR Skyline, and two 500-600whp 350Zs in the shop. I'm aware of what a 6-cylinder engine can produce... With a little forced air.
I'm speaking purely all motor; an L-Series engine could NEVER produce as much as a small-block Chevrolet can.
There is no way anyone can dispute that statement.
@ZedxElite what a bout a sbc v8 383 with twin turbo why can ony pussie rice burners have to have turbo's bitch if you tryn challenge my 383 with a v6 an put a turbo on it ill put some turbo in my shit too...increase my shit till it blows like an atom bowm what is that 600hp to turbo dont know you tell me you know what im talking bout brotherfuck that dick stick mothafucker he can shuve that oil measering device up his ass..pinche guay que que queu shut the fuck up homz
"it can easily be a twin turbo RB26DETT or something of that sort. " No it can't If you knew anything about Z cars you would know that the twin turbo's exhaust manifold and down pipe run EXACTLY where the steering shaft needs to go. There is no room for the twin turbo setup. Also RB26's are no light weight engine conservatively the RB26 weighs 540 lbs, that's 100 lbs heavier than the L28
You could design a functional twin-turbocharger system on an S30, we did a single GT3071R SR20DET powered S30, so it's pretty fresh in my mind. The manifolds would be rather lengthy, but they would be equal length, so that would help with efficiency.
But you are correct, factory twin-turbochargers would not work due to space constraints.
@ZedxElite Your statement proves why V8 engines were the way to go in the 60's and 70's. There is no replacement for displacement. Although, I do have to say you can reach a point where you have too much power for your car. My rule of thumb is, if you can't get traction through the first 3 gears, too much.
@DORKYBA55ATTACK well, technology is a wonderful replacement for displacement, in a real-world plausibility sense. But ultimately, it comes down to potential power at optimum efficiency. A perfectly efficient 2.0liter V10 engine will not have the same power potential as a perfectly efficient 7.0liter V10 engine.
Also, I'd reconsider your rule-of-thumb on usable power. Technology will allow the power to interact more effectively.
Do you have any vids of this thing moving? It sounds so bad ass.

The V8 SBC is not put in this classic for good taste! Its put into an already bastardized car to go around a track as fast as possible.

something about going around a track in a 11050kg car with a V8 in the front of it doesnt spell fast...
