How about the fact that publishers are putting out crappy unfinished games and then screwing you over and forcing you to spend even more money on dlc that should have been included in the first place!! I'm talking to you activision FU. Black ops for example is probably one of the laggiest games I have ever played in my life and there are major issues with connectivity even after all these patches. Make a good game for christ sake. People didn't spend millions of dollars for garbage like this.
you know if you cut down on the money you spend on video games and instead play a game so much your about to break it you would find a new video game a huge relief and basically you wouldn't get so bored and you would keep your options open for example i have still never touched assassins creed brotherhood so maybe instead of getting it right when it comes out find something else to do so then when you do play video games you can enjoy it

Sorry bud but there is no video game made that approches movie title budgets, Take a look at the production budgets for even the biggest tripple A titles they barely break 6 million to make then profit well in excess of 300-500 million typically with a few breaking in excess of 750-1billion.

If you were a hardcore gamer you would know that there were more independant games released last year than the last decade. So 2010, released more small studio games than any other year from 2000. That means there are new ideas, but they never get seen on the public market becuase gamers like you buy the franchises that are just the same. But saying that I am excited this year, also GTA is so much worse than Saints Row. Get SAINTS ROW 3 not gta 5.

When someone talks about the current issues in the movie industry, they're referring more to mainstream movies and big studios because those are the ones with more exposure and money for marketing and distribution. He's saying he wants more of those new ideas on the mainstream level rather than keeping it all on a lower level. Besides, if the game is good, mainstream or not, there's no problem with buying it.

@video - I don't really follow gaming industry, but military shooters go downhill and are steaming pile of shits these days. Reflex knifes, terrible balance, etc etc. No arena games (UT, Quake) because todays average gamer can't play for shit. Fighting games do well but that's in the West and Japan. Family games are okay but who the fuck buys them. MW games for morons are being shat out these days.
I agree with you in general, though consider every year there are new successful games and very few frachises can last more than 3 itterations. Arkham asylum and Borderlands were both new games frachises last year that were successful. So some new games are making it through, look for BRINK next year.
Developers saw that they could churn out a high volume of lighweight games for the new "casual" market, and sold them for the same price as more in depth games.
The thind about new games these days is that its a VERY difficult industry to break into. Games like Cod, Halo, AC etc etc have "perfected" the market and its difficult to create a game which is on par with these types of "supergames". Activision and other such companies have monopolised the market and other companies just dont have the money/resources to produce such quality. That isnt to say good games arent produced, its just a rarity. This situation, I feel, sucks.
There really isnt any new ideas left, you cant have this many games being released on so many different platforms without running out of ideas eventually, and a sequel isnt a bad thing, i loved fallout 3 but New Vegas has so many new concepts and parts to it

Kudos for posting commentary like this and also commenting on it often! I've been buying more new IPs lately. I recently bought Monday Night Combat and Minecraft which are amazing! If you price the game on quality developers are saying their game sucks so they are going to attempt to sell it to the consumer cheap. Then as a consumer, you see the cheap game and think, "Hey, This game is cheap... So it's going to suck. I'll get CoD instead." Nice in theory. Bad in practice

There is a multitude of titles released each year that are priced below the standard 60 retail. For instance, NBA Jam was just released at 40 and the Cabela's games are released for 30 or 40 each year. This model you are describing is already in place.

@Alrreola not limited to shitty, but less value games. Vanquish last year was an amazing game but you got about 8 hours out of it for full price. Compare that to a multiplayer game and there really isnt a competition for what the masses will buy in terms of value
why would you buy a game that none of your friends have vs a game that all your friends have?? in my opinion if you wanna explore the market and not pay 60 then just rent it and see if its worth it
game companies are trying to add variety to their current series instead of add variety to the types of games they put out. its all about money. and if a big blockbuster game/series makes the most money then thats what direction the company will go towards.
btw theres loads of new awesome games coming out next year such as bulletstorm LA noire serious sam 3 duke nukem forever crysis 2 batman arkham city portal 2 mass effect 3 metal gear solid rising rage brink etc etc
The problem is that the money lies in the console marked. Todays consoles have outdated hardware. Therefore its hard to make games with better and better graphics. The consoles are holding the game industri back.
@Mofl0611 graphics is just a small story. One of the best games from last year was Super Mario Galaxy 2 and it runs on Wii. Kirby's Epic yard was regarded as one of the best looking games from an artistic point of view last year. Theres more to a game than how many polygons the engine/hardware can push. gameplay, control story etc

I agree with you. After this video I googled video game releases in 2011, and the only other game apart from LA Noire that was not a sequel and actually interested me was I Am Alive.
However, I do think you are forgetting about games released on platforms such as PSN and XBLA. These are both great places for developers to release games at a cheaper price, which they do.

I think new games(that aren't)should hit around the $40~45 mark that way they sit in between the "greatest hit" version of games and the AAA games.the only game I bought last year that wasn't a sequel was vanquish, but It came out the same day as fallout:nv and naruto uns2. I think this is exactly what anyone needs to do if they want to create a successful multiplayer series. Otherwise players will just stick with their CoD, Halo, or Battlefield. EA has said they want to unseat CoD from it's perch. What they need to do is start a new multiplayer IP, make it good , and price it low (maybe even take a loss). Then they can build a franchise around it, as the low price will increase the fans of the series right off the bat.

I think the cod series needs to get an updated graphx engine but i also think the xbox and ps3 are holdin the pc back in graphics because i jst hav a performance pc ( nothin really expensive but not cheap either) and i get 90 fps in black ops with settings maxed out

everything you said is pritty straight on, also i was thinking porshe, when you said that. yes they need to offer different pricing models. i didnt buy fallout new vagas until it was 40 bucks on a deal. and im not buying assassin creed brotherhood until its probly 40 dollars. i dont feel those games are worth 60 bucks to me. unlike call of duty with i pre ordered and paid full price, and wow cataclysm full price.

Kudos for posting commentary like this and also commenting on it often! I've been buying more new IPs lately. I recently bought Monday Night Combat and Minecraft which are amazing! I'm done with CoD after Black Ops and likely done with Halo now that Bungie has moved on. I plan to buy Brink upon it's release for the new IP and all the new ideas to the shooter genre.

If you price the game on quality developers are saying their game sucks so they are going to attempt to sell it to the consumer cheap. Then as a consumer, you see the cheap game and think, "Hey, This game is cheap... So it's going to suck. I'll get CoD instead." Nice in theory. Bad in practice

There is a multitude of titles released each year that are priced below the standard 60 retail. For instance, NBA Jam was just released at 40 and the Cabela's games are released for 30 or 40 each year. This model you are describing is already in place.

@Alrreola not limited to shitty, but less value games. Vanquish last year was an amazing game but you got about 8 hours out of it for full price. Compare that to a multiplayer game and there really isnt a competition for what the masses will buy in terms of value

The problem is that the money lies in the console marked. Todays consoles have outdated hardware. Therefore its hard to make games with better and better graphics. The consoles are holding the game industri back.

@Mofl0611 graphics is just a small story. One of the best games from last year was Super Mario Galaxy 2 and it runs on Wii. Kirby's Epic yard was regarded as one of the best looking games from an artistic point of view last year. Theres more to a game than how many polygons the engine/hardware can push. gameplay, control story etc

Bulletstorm, Rage and Space Marine are three new games that are very much so in my top games for 2011 all are new but I also want Dead Space 2 and more dirt games and more GoW because these games series are amazing!

I agree with you. After this video I googled video game releases in 2011, and the only other game apart from LA Noire that was not a sequel and actually interested me was I Am Alive.
However, I do think you are forgetting about games released on platforms such as PSN and XBLA. These are both great places for developers to release games at a cheaper price, which they do.

I think new games(that aren't)should hit around the $40~45 mark that way they sit in between the "greatest hit" version of games and the AAA games.the only game I bought last year that wasn't a sequel was vanquish, but It came out the same day as fallout:nv and naruto uns2. I think this is exactly what anyone needs to do if they want to create a successful multiplayer series. Otherwise players will just stick with their CoD, Halo, or Battlefield. EA has said they want to unseat CoD from it's perch. What they need to do is start a new multiplayer IP, make it good , and price it low (maybe even take a loss). Then they can build a franchise around it, as the low price will increase the fans of the series right off the bat.
