After that, it's just a process of learning your hair and how it responds to different things. Then do what it likes best. everyone can have long hair. no exceptions!!! Hair on its own grows 6 inch a year. Reason we don't have long hair is cause we don't treat it right. Leave it alone and it will grow.

@ericaj58it really doesn't have to do with race or else you'd see every white girl with hair down their back. it has to do with genetics as well the way you take care of it. Black people need to moisturize their hair because our curl patterns make it harder for the natural oils to travel down from the root to the ends. if you take care of your hair right it should be healthy whether it be really short or really long.

Some of these comments are so stupid. Anyone can have long hair.
People used to make fun of me and say I had a weave and pull my hair. I used to come home crying and I would beg my mom to cut my hair. Even though I'm Afro-Latina, I still looked/look like a black girl and people have it in their minds that if your black you must have short hair or you're wearing a weave. This confused me.

Both my parents are Ghanaian (West African) and I was born with the thickest afro ever, even when it's relaxed it's still has an afro-y texture unless pressed. It's almost down to the middle of my back. Everyone says, 'OMG, is that your real hair?' It's very strange for black people find it wierd if a black girl has long hair. A black boy in my class even had the audacity to say I was wearing horse hair and a black girl once said to me that she was going to cut my hair in my sleep LOL.

Girl don't EVER get a perm or relaxer. I have hair like yours and i'm black and people are always tryin to talk me into it. don't do it Your hair will fall out. My mom had reallly long hair until she got a perm and dun dun dun IT FELL OUT.!!! TRUST ME

@naraboo25 your absolutly right, my moms hair was to the middle of her back until she started getting perms and now its shorter, and my mom made me get a perm a couple of times because she thought my hair was too thick and long, and it broke some of the edges of my hair off and now i dont get perm. all i need is a blow dryer every now and then.

hi...my hair naturaly grows fast. or it seems like it. I went until i was 11 without perms and i did one and it worked fine. It really depends on your hair texture. If u kno how to maintain it, like most girls dont it will break and die easily. im 13 now and my hair is about an inch above my elbow...your hair is so long and beautiful lol...

Why can't any one understand Its just hair and yes black people can grow long hair but lots of them put relaxers and perms on it and it makes there hair straight but it takes it out but just wear you hair natural it will grow eventually

everyone can have long hair. no exceptions!!! Hair on its own grows 6 inch a year. Reason we don't have long hair is cause we don't treat it right. Leave it alone and it will grow.

I am amazed at how incredibly stupid some of these comments are. I cannot believe people actually think black people cannot grow long hair. Black people's hair grows just like any other race. Black women just abused the hell out of their hair to make it look like something its not. That is why many do not have hair past shoulder length. It has nothing to do with race.

@ericaj58 that is so true... that's ignorance for black folks to think that ,, but unfortunately for hundreds of years that has been shoved into our brains...you can't put all these harsh and deadly chemicals in your hair and expect it to grow long and to be healthy.. In these past few yrs i've seen more growth and overall health of my hair natural then i was ever able to see when i was getting relaxers in for 20 something yrs! it would alway get to a certain point then stop or break

@ericaj58it really doesn't have to do with race or else you'd see every white girl with hair down their back. it has to do with genetics as well the way you take care of it. Black people need to moisturize their hair because our curl patterns make it harder for the natural oils to travel down from the root to the ends. if you take care of your hair right it should be healthy whether it be really short or really long.

No, hair grows from the scalp. The hair that's already out of the scalp may not look good, but that had nothing to do w/ actual hair growth.

thats what happened to me . my hair used to be down to my butt . then i cut it and now its to my bra buckle on my back lol . im only 13 and i agree with all the advice you have put up here (im only half black though , but with CURLY hair)
