Thx v much for the info....it's very well explained....it's based on metabolic activity
-I ve no problem with the accent (American...& I m a Malaysian)...
-What I m not clear is we r told too restrain from taking too much simple sugars prior to the scan, as it might interfere with its absorption into the cells.....the question is a relative HOW mUCH is too much & for how long before z procedure?
@nas2020ful1 Make a solid effort to consume low carbs & avoiding simple sugars starting the night before. Most patients can be NPO for 4-6 prior to scan & still see accurate results. However, since these scans are costly, better fasting & preparation can increase your chance for a solid diagnosis. Lastly, make sure the radiologist that's interpreting your scan has extensive training in PET, many don't.
Could a PET scan be used as a lie detector? You know, to see which parts of the brain light up? They detected a lie using the PET scanner on House, but that's a TV show. It's the same show where they suggested using chemo and radiation to treat Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, so I don't trust it.
Thank you for this wonderful video! I'm a student at Psychology and i was told that the PET scan is not recommended when analyzing subcortical structures. Is that due to the high intake of glucose or what could be the reason? Thank you :)
A recent CT scan, 3 year post HL survivor, indicated enlarged lymph nodes in my lower neck; previous my cancer was located in my sub mandibular area. I was then ordered to have a PET scan performed. If the malignancy needs to be at least half a centimeter in size to show on a PET does that mean there is a good chance I am not in remission?
PET scanning can be useful for determining the extent of the metabolic activity of the brain and gives information regarding the location within the brain that there is predominant activity - - when one uses a dedicated brain PET scan. Of course, the scan is much more sensitive to brain activity when used in this fashion. Typical use of the PET scan offers relatively little significant information regarding the brain.
Some radiologists will attempt to evaluate the brain on a whole body PET scan and occasionally they will be correct. Total body PET scanning notoriously lacks sensitivity and specificity for brain evaluation.
Patients can be scanned in specific circumstances when using dedicated brain PET, for example, with limited sensory input such as blindfolded war with drug-induced sleep. There are entire branches of medicine that deal with investigation into the use of PET scanning for evaluation of brain activity.
There are entire branches of medicine that deal with investigation into the use of PET scanning for evaluation of brain activity. PET scanning can easily be used to evaluate for the presence or absence of basic metabolic function and therefore could be used to evaluate the extent of damage from a stroke (brain cell death). In a center like ours this would be unusual and all of the PET scans that are done in our facility are part of an evaluation for malignancy.
In larger centers, a small proportion, no more than 3-5% of all PET scans are done to investigate brain activity. Some of these would be for brain cell death or extent of a stroke but some would also be for other disease evaluation such as support of the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or other degenerative diseases.
True experts in this area would be in the large centers that have research programs for such. Metabolic scanning for brain evaluation will likely develop in a dramatic way in the next decade as more is learned about how to interpret these scans.
What does it sound like when it takes pictures?

can a pet scan pick up abnormal activity in the cerebral cortex, like brain cell death or alzhiemer's? if not what type of scan do u recomend?
