The truth lies between the last two comments. If a photographer is really creative, he can make a unique photo of nearly anyone. It doesn't matter if it is a celebrity or not. On the other hand, a celebrity makes the photo more attractive, even if the photographer has no name.

You have very finite expectations if you think you've found genius here - he's just a good photographer, that's all, creative and precise. A craftsman, but not genius by any means. On the other hand, he had the unique opportunity to photograph some brilliant people which arouse the word genius, but he gets no credit for the aura of those who fill the frame.

Richard Avedon was truly one of the world's greatest photographer's. I have always loved his work & ALWAYS thought he was soooooo beautiful...and he was. Just a stunning looking man, even into his later years. I love black & white photography. It just goes so deep beyond the surface & brings out the soul of any person/subject. Just amazing!

wow, so all of these characters we see are really people he made up in his mind and produced, not real people? This is a wonderful thing for a photographer to admit. He is actually creating these people for us.

Well actually they cannot be made up, they are real indeed. I think he meant to say that things he likes to photograph are shown on his photos (moods, portraits etc.) and they represent him, his mind, state, mood, and that is his way of expressing the art of a moment - it's him not those people.

Well, what I am saying is, say he photographs someone who is not very well known but one day will be a star. Depending on how he decides to represent them, that person will then be known to be that character type. Just the same way as we confuse the actor with the character in movies. we actually think they are the character. In this way, the photographer has the power to create an image and a character despite whether it is true or not. This then carries over to the public. It is all made up.

his pictures were amazing i don't know how he did it, i actually saw an exhibit on his pictures and for them to have been taken in the 50s60s and 70s the clarity is beyond better then of my pictures in my digital camera, and another thing is how his pictures never ceased to be amazing since making beautiful shots day by day is hardly and easy job

I find it funny that all of you that claim to know about copyrights really don't have a clue. Avedon is getting full credit for these photos and they are compiled in a way that is protected through "Fair Use". It does not matter that the video was posted by someone other than the actual author of the video, as the original author was not out to seek profit from it in the first place. Anyone can repost this video without the consent of the "author". Quit whining. It doesn't suit you.
