Envy is a big isuue in this age. An age of materialistic advances. The focus is so much on aquiring worldy objects that there emmerges competition. This occurs in the work alce, community and even families. May Allah protect us all from this trait, ameen.

    Jazak'Allah Khayr 4 upload.

  • Jazaakum Allahu khairan for this upload.

It feels a little unfair on the word "ghibta" to be translated as "jealousy" lol. Jealousy only relates to negative feelings & emotions. "Jealousy" has 2 meanings in English & If we think of them then we will find that neither describes "ghibta" accurately.

  • (1) You experience "jealousy" over something that YOU already have when you suffer from fear, insecurity, uncertainty, suspicion, uneasiness, anxiety, tension, etc because you are afraid to lose it (in part or whole) or have it taken away from you.

Example: A firstborn being jealous of their newborn sibling over having to share the parents' attention & affection.

This in Arabic is "غيرة على" y3ni jealousy 'over' something/someone.

  • (2) Jealousy's meaning that is relevant to this video is with regards to what OTHERS have that you don't (possessions, characteristics, advantages, successes, relationships, etc) when you feel angry, bitter, resentful, etc because you see them as being unworthy of it & you rightfully more deserving.

Example: someone else gets the credit for the work you did or your cat prefers your neighbour's lap to your own ;-p

This in Arabic can be "غيرة من" y3ni from.

  • (3) "Envy" in plain English refers to wrongfully coveting & begrudging what it it is others have & longingly wishing to have it yourself. And all to yourself. When you wish that they lose it, that is taken or removed from them then then this is the "حسد" that the Shaikh is speaking about.

  • (4) "Ghibta" غبطة is one of my all time favourite words in Arabic & I don't think really has any true English equivalent!! This is when you wish for yourself what others have minus the begrudging & not at all wishing that it gets taken away from them. You are perfectly happy that they were promoted & do not begrudge that they landed that raise but wish it for yourself, too!

  • I am sorry for leaving this many comments but I was afraid that it might be a little confusing for some English speakers to find that there is a form of "jealousy" that is praiseworthy when that word is understandably associated with negativity in most minds. So what's the alternative translation?! I have no idea lol but maybe this should be one of those words that catch on & people start using in Arabic :O)

  • @BlueGene1402, no worries, thanks for helping those who may have been unclear, as for an alternative translation of jealousy, then Allaah knows best.

  • Muhammad bin Sireen said: "I have never envied anyone over anything; if a person is going to be in the Fire, how could I envy him over some worldly matters when he is destined for the Fire? And if he is going to Paradise, then how could I be envious of a man of Paradise with whom Allah tabaaraka wa ta'ala is pleased?" Muslim said: "We have never heard anything better than this from the words of Ibn Sireen." (Al-Mujalasah wa Jawahir al-'Ilm art. 2931)

  • jazakallaah khair!
