Mquiroz90... The "N" versions don't have a tail rotor, and a few other differences. I like the "F" versions with the longer blades for higher altitude performance. All of them I prefer over the Jetrangers.
wow, excellent video. quick question, how long did the whole flights actually take? I figure you must have been going at around 130 knots and that is over 2,000 miles. How long was it?
That is a beautiful bird, congratulations, love the 500E, here in El Salvador we have the 500E in our Air Force, they are 1984 models, beautiful, nice video too, what camera are u using?
Yes - its a ground power unit (or GPU) - or in this case a bunch of batteries. It helps to prevent a hot start (928 degrees C for more than 1 second) by providing enough amperage to run the engine up to 15% N1 (8250 RPM) before introducing fuel. This makes sure enough air is moving through the engine to keep it cool during the start process.
@westcoastpighunt Huge difference - just the change in where you sit was a big thing and then the fact that the 500 does not have hydraulics is another big item. I move back and forth between them now with out too much trouble.
@richardjsears I noticed the PIC seat on this ship is on the left. I fly Agustas where the PIC is on the right. Was that a consideration at all with your choice in this particular ship?
Incredible sight and sound from a truly remarkable Helo and would be my 1st and only choice if I was in the market to buy one. Just curious on how many refueling stops did it take? must of had a great time! thanks for posting , Mark
Thanks for the kind remarks. I had to stop 7 times and burned just under 600 gallons of Jet-A on the return trip. I clocked about 21 hours of flight time!
No air conditioning, but didn't really need it. Was a little warm in Arizona, but overall not too bad. The Air Conditioning for the 500 uses up about 90 pounds of useful load so you really have to have a need for it to want to give up 30 minutes of fuel! Its a 1986 500e.
start up souned great. Sure hope you had A/C on board for your major cross country flight. That had to be a great time! Good luck with the chopper. What year is it? ~Dave
Bought a new heli then flew it from Florida to California? I couldn't afford the fuel for that flight!

Single engine helicopters are VFR only in the UK. You have to have a twin engine if you want to do an IR. Is it the same in the US?

Forgive me for asking but why is the fuselage of the MD500 tilted backwards when this helicopter is on the ground?
Zoloft61 1 year ago
@Zoloft61 Good question. Not all of them are like that though, some sit fairly level.

@richardjsears does that also increase the startup time of the engine?

Thanks Motokid! I actually bid on both 500s they just took out of service. They went for too much (IMHO) so I got this one instead.
