  • When they left Tucson Town the cat was driving like a bat outa hell heading for Nogales!!

  • Lot of drug reference songs from old Hoyt. Loved by many. Ringo The NoNoNo song. 3 Dog Night Mama told me not to come. Steppenwolf Snowblind Friend and the classic stoner anthem THE PUSHER! all wrote by Hoyt. Rip

  • Hot Damn, that's a good un!

  • This song brings back many memories of my wilder days.

  • What a smooth, mellow, wonderful bass voice. So many would LOVE to have a voice like this!

  • first time i heard it was on WKRP in cinncinnati

  • @greenhornet156 Me too.

  • @greenhornet156 just as I was getting over listening to theme songs from the 80's one had to be mentioned...lol Still, I LOVE this song....it was playing when I was coming back from having an operation. (just hoped that surgeon didn't find out about me and his wife.)

  • I sold Hoyt Axton an Abalone shell pocket knife once. (my claim to fame)

  • You people were so lucky to know such a talented man!!!!!!

  • my step dad would play the song officer ray and i can't get a copy anywhere someone help

  • how in the fuck did i get here???i was looking at beats?

  • always loved this song, and all the other great western country of the days, its a shame there isnt a single country artist out there today that can produce the music of a era in music that i grew up on

  • I used to hear this song on British Radio 2 when I was growing up-the safe radio station. Didn't realize then the song was all about cocaine problems-it's amazing how anything sung as country seems family friendly.

  • it switched to "It was della and her LOVER", instead of "Della and the DEALER"

  • Just passing the day.

  • maria610421 -if you're out there, please explain, I'm dying to hear your words of wisom.

  • Sounds like Obama Administration.

  • Miss you Hoyt.

  • Looks like Sam Bush on Fiddle.!

  • @southernsong it does. just need tony, now.

  • Love his voice and his groups harmony in this one!!! awesome!

  • He snorted his coke through a Century note......

  • Hoyt's wifes parents live next door to me and I had the pleasure of sitting down to dinner one evening with him. He was a great guy and had lots of cool stories.

  • @7632764 I have a friend who knew Hoyt from business contacts. My friend is not famous or exceptional but Hoyt befriended him and would wait to visit with him after work and buy him a cup of coffee.

  • @7632764 thats so cool, i think he had a great voice...did he sing della and the dealer for you ?!

  • @7632764 and where was he from?

  • Love this song. Brings back such wonderful memories. It was one of my daddy's favorites.

  • LOVE IT!!!!!

  • "the dealer had a knife, and the dog had a gun, and the cat had a shot of rye." Gotta love country lyrics haha.

  • I;d love to hear Scotty sing this!!

  • Thank you Bates

  • Love you Hoyt, I'm going to start collecting your albums.

  • The cat was COOL!

  • Anyone know what happened to Jake and Kalamazoo?

  • @gcpotts1

I believe the song says what happened, if you'll listen. "Four shadows ran from the bar that night, and a dog a cat ran too...."

  • My son in Kalamazoo has 5 females in his house - dog, cat, wife, 2 daughters. I told him to learn this on his guitar. My favorite song is "I Wont Go Huntin' With You Jake, I'm Only Chasin' Wimmin". Signs on highway in Counce TN say "No Jake Brakes"; keeps the land developers and real estate brokers happy.

  • My son in Kalamazoo MI has 5 females in his house - a cat, dog, wife, and 2 daughters. I told him to learn this on his guitar. My favorite song is "I Wont Go Huntin' With You Jake, I'm Only Hunting Wimmin". Highway signs in Counce TN say "No Jake Brakes", keeps the land developers and real estate companies happy!

  • I searched for 20 yrs for this album and finally found it in a used record store. I bought it for three dollars!

  • @XSISFUN way cool!!! I havent head this tune in over 30 years... gosh do you remember the levi jeans the girls where wearing back then? dang who say that we cant time travel? Thank you Hoyt for such an experince.

  • What a song :) Not a country fan, but sometimes when you hear a great song, what can you do :)

Saw him do it on WKRP last night.

  • just got done watching the dukes of hazzard and he sang a song at the end, something bout a cop in a small town, does anybody know the name????

  • and for what its worth:

bailey quarters was so much hotter than jennifer. yum

    johnny fever got that ,too.

also, wkrp was the only "radio station" ive ever heard play pink floyds 'dogs' or black sabbath 'national acrobat' loved that show

  • I like this a lot!!

  • Me too! Me too! He is my cousin!!!

  • @pokegirl207 hoyt axton was your cousin? Did you get to know him well?

  • @ron77773 sorry but i never got to meet him. He had passed way before I was told he was my cousin.

  • Real Americana.

  • I'm Related to this Guy!

  • Another classic from my childhood I'd almost forgotten about. Thanks so much for posting!!!

  • Class Tune, Reminds me of uncle.. Couldnt believe i found it, thank you bates 1972

  • Is it true, Hoyt Axton's mother wrote heartbreak hotel for Elvis? A mighty fine teacher I think. I love dog songs, this one has been a favorite for many years, Thanks Hoyt.

  • @bandit001able Yes it is, His moms name was Mae Axton

  • @bandit001able

    dog songs rock.

led zeps 'bron-yr-aur stomp' is my fave.

everly brothers 'hes a bird dog' is another good one

    got any more suggestions?

  • Hoyt really was not a country singer. He was a folk singer, studied civil war songs, was a balladeer, wrote rock, wrote pop, and was a major humorist as well as an actor. County musician is the least of the titles I would give him. Anyone who wrote The Pusher and Joy to the World is not just a 'country' singer. Can you tell I adore Hoyt. As you can see, I use the present tense. He will always live in lives of people who love music. (He was also larger than life!)

  • @MyMoppet52 YES

  • @Pepper1808 I think he would have taken Lonnie Anderson if she had been willing. :) I just saw that episode this past month. Hamilton Camp played on an episode also. It was where they had a live broadcast at an electronics store & the only customer turned out to be a robber. Camp was a hoot! Thanks for posting this. I adore Hoyt and always have. His songs were "new" to me...not best of old gold.

  • wkrp hell ya ,even as a kid i had an infatuation with lori anderson@Pepper1808

  • @Pepper1808 That's how I found out about this song! It's way before my time

  • @Pepper1808, just saw your post today. Hoyt played TJ Watson from Rockthrow, West Virginia. I his mind he was engaged to the beautiful Jennifer Marlow. The humor goes on from there. I NEED a life.

  • @JohnSalmeier sorry typo should read "IN his mind"

  • He is a rare musician, my opinion- he has more talent than most of the so called country music singers today

  • So True

  • Don't know how I found this but I did and have watched it alot of times. I'm a banjo and guitar picker and know the difference between so so taent and great talent. This guy had it going on. Wish he were still with us.

  • @Pepper1808

I saw that. Got a link to the clip?

That was in his hey day

  • @dallasloanguy it's on hulu and they have photos of all the seasons episodes with mini resume. Hoyt is mentioned when you look for the episode.

  • This guy was awesome; can't believe we lost him. Such talent!

  • Man Hoyt was awesome, you just don't get anyone wanting to be this down to earth anymore. Who the hell is that red-head back up singer? Can;t get an answer anywhere!

  • @mongo731 She is one pretty girl whoever she is.

  • Possible that the lady back-up singer is Linda Ronstadt?

  • @Pepper1808 he was jennifers boyfriend from back home in west virginia

  • This song makes the illogical, logical.

  • Hoyt was the epitome of real music and a great guy.

  • You cannot forget that Hoyt Axton's mother is the one that got Elvis into to industry; and, she wrote the lyrics to "Heart Break Hotel". Plus, Hoyt wrote "Joy to the World", sang by Three Dog Night, and "Never Been to Spain", which had been covered by Three Dog Night, Waylon Jennings, and Elvis. Yes, he was in Gremlin's, however, he was in "Heart Like a Wheel" a year before, and the "Black Stallion" in 1979.

    RIP Hoyt!

  • @kc8ntp don't forget the steppenwolf songs he wrote as well the pusher and snowblind friend

  • The drummer is Rhys Clark, Billy Joel's original drummer.

  • What kinda dealer was Hyt singing about? It wasn't a card dealer...hint, hint!! The Cat kicked ass!! I wonder who's familiar he was?

  • @Pepper1808 As matter of fact, I just watched that episode!

  • im looking for it right now ... it was great ... where is it ?

  • This was fun too

  • @Pepper1808 I do...In fact I just watched that on hulu!

    WKRP Was a great show!

  • Great song, bates1972. Can't help but hear a strong resemblance, voice wise, to Tom T. Hall. I never realized how many great songs Hoyt Axton sang - -what a smooth, distinct voice and a style all his own. Thanks for sharing!

  • One of my favorites!

  • guy on Lead guitar looks like Chuck Glaser, of the Glaser Bros who backed up Marty Robbins in early 60's.

check me on this..is it Chuck? He and Tompall and Jim really were talented singers!

  • @RobertBoogPowell I think you may just be right!

  • @RobertBoogPowell Tompall And The Glaser Bros - Medley (Vintage) "LIVE"

  • @RobertBoogPowell Guitarist is actually Hank Barrio.

The other band members are Dennis Fetchet on fiddle and harmonica, Bruce Barlow on bass, and Rhys Clark on drums

  • my husband cant stop laffin

  • One of my dreams was to be a singer with either Hoyt Axton or Jackson Browne. I envy those women!

  • @Pepper1808 YESSSSSS I do recall that WRP episode...pretty good episode.

  • someone needs to put pet parade on here some where love Hoyt..

  • my dad listens to this song all the time

  • How I miss ol' Hoyt!

  • I believe his backup singer were Jana Lee Dare, Carol Hunt, Mary Lynn-Dias, but I don't know who is who

  • Mary Lyn Dias is the cute blond on the far right I think. .She can be seen again in the music video Knock on Wood user channel Sleekstreet shot at the world famous Betty Lous in Nashville..

  • When was this concert?

  • my dad found my mom's old record player and i listen to della and the dealer daily ♥ also torpedo, and a trucker song thats on the Hoyt axon record. its so cool to see what my parents used to use for music players.

  • @Pepper1808

"As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!"

  • The Bathroom Buddy.

  • @Pepper1808 Loved WKRP, but to my regret, never saw the episode with the Awesome Hoyt Axton.

  • @philgiesbrecht you can watch the episode at the website something old nothing new. search for wkrp hoyt.

  • The blonde singer is singing in a "Barney Fife" Mic.

  • 1. never get em wet

    2.never put em in sunlight

    3.never..never feed em after midnight

  • The closest back-up singer looks like Linda Rodstadt??

  • Remember when he appeared on "WKRP in Cinncinati" and he had to pretend that he was in love with Loni Anderson?THAT's acting,y'all.

  • my dad was wondering if any of you know the part in the movie when the horse got loose and what song was playing during that? thanks

  • ..... snorted his coke thru a century note, you decide....Her lover was Boone winner of the fight

  • Ole Hoyt had him a good looking trio of women singers.

  • @whatsup119

especially the little red head in the middle

  • i swear that guitarist is a cardboard cutout being moved by someone!

  • Josh Leo, I think.

  • Great song, its got a great bang to it :-)

  • Absolutely grreat !!

  • Hey! That's the guy that invented the Bathroom Buddy!

  • Get on it Abe! Play that guitar, son!

    Nice Song, BTW. :D

  • I have to know does Boon or the dealer get killed, who does della run away in the pick up truck with? please help lol

  • @gorbashuk Google the song read the words cuz I just asked the cat " but he never said a mumblin' word" It's okay if "the dealer" won "b-cuz" I see him as card player not a dope dealer

  • it says her 'lover' but i had to look at the lyrics to figure that out - maybe a flaw in an otherwise terrific song

  • @firestartertwistedfi

Boon won, it seems obvious to me. The dealer was not her lover, he was a coke addict, and a bad dude.

  • check out " wild bull rider " By Hoyt

  • and the cat had a shot of rye.....

  • You think, by the title, this is gonna be about a card dealer, a girl, and a shootout, but it turns out to be along those lines, except the card dealer is the drug dealer. A Great Song

  • can someone post WHEN THE MORNING COMES from 1974. Hoyt biggest hit

  • jeesh u folks are young :)

  • The blonde back up singer was sooo hot!

  • He played this on WKRP. He was jennifer's boyfriend from back home.

  • "and a cat named Kalamazoo" was the only lyric I remembered from WKRP. And I had a big crush on Jennifer, as well as Bailey. It'd be good trivia question.

  • Did this become a UK hit after it was heard on the TV show WKRP In Cincinnati?

  • fleetingly heard at the start of this clip is announcer David Allen, who presented country shows for BBC2 television and BBC Radio 2 for many years. Indeed, 'Della and the Dealer' was much played on Radio 2 for some years after its chart appearance.

  • @franksmith109 Terry Wogan played it on radio 2 this morning, blast from the blast

  • My drive to work just isn't the same without 'Wake Up To Wogan' and songs like this!

  • Perfect fun song.

  • The cat was cool, Axton should be remembered for his music not for the Gremlins appearance. RIP Dude!

  • The cat was cool and he never said a mumblin' word!

  • Super!!

  • Some of my earliest memories as a child were my parents playing "Snowblind Friend." RIP Hoyt.

  • hey, is that abe lincoln playing guitar

  • Saw him one time. Put on a great show. RIP Big guy

  • all the singers are cute

  • Hell,I like all three!!!

  • God, What a stud-muffin he was!!

  • I'm in love with the middle back up singer. She's Cuuuute

  • my grandma went to highschool with this guy in Jacksonville FL

  • Heartbreak Hotel-The lyrics were written by a steel guitar player from Nashville named Tommy Durden, who was once a dishwasher repairman. He was inspired by a newspaper story about a man who killed himself and left behind a note saying only, "I walk a lonely street." Another Nashville songwriter named Mae Boren Axton wrote the music

  • Comment removed

  • Piece of trivia - Hoyt's mom (Mae) wrote Elvis's "Heartbreak Hotel!"

  • Yes!!! That's how I first came to know and love this song!! Remember the one he sang to Johnny..."You got the knife, I got the gun, c'mon boy, we're gonna have a little fun...I'm a jealous man, I'd die for love." Was that a song of Hoyt's, as well? Classic!

  • the song is Jealous Man

  • LOL! Thank you Bpothik. That was a great show and I am so glad someone else remembers...

  • Have lived since I was a kid-incredible voice, awesome song writting.

  • anyone have a clip of hoyt singing "rusty ole halo"? i'd like to hear that too...

  • Me too!

    That's what I'm looking for.

  • Who says "... Hoyt Axton!" at the beginning, it sounds like John Suchet.

Fantastic song BTW, my Dad had the single and it was one of the first songs I loved when I was about 7.

  • Well I keep being told that I sound like Hoyt Axton, and since I never really listened to him, I guess I do..Would love Hoyt Axton fans to go give me a listen and leave an opinion...Search on youtube for Theebigguy...Ya know I guess I do sound a lot like Hoyt

  • did you people know he is one of the best song writers? one of his best is The Pusher from the sound track from easy rider sang by Steppen Wolf

  • Joy to the world by three dog night is good too

  • I remember him on WKRP as Jennifer's old boyfriend. One of my all time favorite episodes.

  • i love that 1 too,

"But with God as my witness,

    I thought turkeys could fly."

  • Hoyt was always great .

He also had a good eye for backup singers.

  • The old school hottie! When I was a kid we had 1.5 chanels. One came in almost all the time and the other came in half the time. So I guess that's not quite 1.5. I loved Hee Haw but only got to watch it when we were visiting friends or relatives. We didn't get the station! No Hee Haw, Dukes of Hazzard, A team, WKRP, I watch that stuff on u tube and reruns. I love the old music too. What are some others that you like?

  • Yeah Hoyt is cool, cool as shit...but did anyone notice the backup singers? The cameraman liked the blonde, good taste!

  • the blonde is a old-school hottie! i grew up having to endure hee-haw; only 3 channells back then and at that time the kids did not control the remote(ha-ha!) now i am 39 and just love a lot of this music.

  • Yes!!!

  • Hoyt was the real deal. I saw him pull a straight razor out of his boot one time and use it to play slide guitar. Cracked me up.

  • IS THIS GUY FRETKILLR ON YOUTUBE?

  • this is good country

  • I've known of this man my whole life from seeing him on TV. I was searching info on Steppenwolf's "The Pusher" and found out that Hoyt Axton wrote it and has an earlier version of it, along with a lot of other great songs. What an amazing song writer and performer this guy was.

  • Miss you buddy.

  • NICE SONG

  • love this one also. wkrp memories, thanks, clark

  • Great song. His Mother, Mae Boren Axton was

a co-writer of Heartbreak Hotel which of course

    started the E career.

This bit of trivia has made me a few bucks over

    the years.

  • What song did Paul McCarty call 'Scramble Eggs'? He changed the name to 'Yesterday'.

  • You answered your own question?

  • I wonder if this song is loosely based on a true story. And if so...I wonder if Hoyt was the dog or the cat.

  • Never thought of that. He was friends with Randy Boone. I vote for the cat.

  • There ain't nearly enough video of Hoyt, I really miss him
