The factors are 1. weather, and the temp needs to be blow freezing. 2. Community volunteers and lead person as to how keen they are. In my experience rinks sometimes get opened between Xmas and New Years but more often than not it's into the New Year. I'm hoping for an early start. The fellow that runs the Bayshore rink has started watering.
lol rink is empty compared to us in qc , we have to rinks olympic sizez next to eachother one for skating one for hockey , some nights we have to make for teams to play and not be crammed
10 4 gosensgo55, This tiny rink is in our tiny backyard. We have many many outdoor public rinks available during the winter too. In addition, Ottawa has the longest skating rink in the world when the canal that runs through the city freezes in the winter. We have the world's smallest and largest here.
how did you make that rink that is sick i live in philadelphia during the winter it gets cold here but i want to move to canada because i love hockey and my dream is to build a ice rink if you can give me any pointers on how to build an hockey rink that would be great thanks
In my own backyard rink the surface is concrete padio stones so I have a very good base. I have 2 foot high boards (4X8 sheets of plywood ripped down the middle and then some framing to hold ot all together. I don't use a liner but instead build the ice up a bit of a layer at a time. The colder the temperature, the easier it is to establish your rink.
Or, come and visit us in Ottawa next winter, we have many good outdoor community rinks and also the longest skating rink in the World with our Canal that runs throught the City. It's about 7 km or (~5+ miles) long.
Dude, i am so jealous, i live in the uk and the rinks are few and far between, fighting for ice time is a real problem also and then there's the cost were looking at roughly £120 an hour ($244 can) where as you guys get to just go out side and play, man you got the high life, i'd be outside all day and night if i could. Take it easy Bud, Sy Lennox (coventry, england)
First you need cold enough weather. Relatively flat surface. If you plan do use some kind of boards (could just be a 2X6 boards around edge. For backyard rinks, many around here use a liner which can be a tarp or plastic sheeting to create a small "pool". Fill with water and let it freeze.
Hi, this video clip was shot later in the afternoon and the guys were probably a bit tired. Also, this is outdoor pickup hockey (or shinny or pond hockey) and you can see with this group there were no substitutes so everyone is playing all the time. With league play or pickup with more than one line the speed and intensity can be higher. Outdoor hockey has a special feel to it that is like nothing else. Come up to Canada and give it a try this winter.
It's outdoor pickup hockey so the puck can't be raised, there's no equipment so you try and pass a lot and set up the shot. You can also see with this particular game it was low key and the guys were tired from playing all afternoon.
This rink is in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in one of the many parks in the city. The name of this park is Windsor Park. Glad you viewed the video. TA4ZMA
