Even if it appears to be suggesting some sort of filth it certainly does it in a tasteful manner. In those days it was all about the viewer knowing it now, all they do is show it. Malden is a legendary actor I admire.
This, to me, is the only really dirty scene in the film. Notice that after Vaccaro grabs the bread (cigarette hanging from his mouth), the camera pans to the dog and then the chicken. Surely this is to show us that something 'animalistic' is going on. And it sure looks nasty and filthy to me. People in Italy-proper would consider this scene obscene. Me, too. But it sure gets the point across. Emily Post probably dropped dead upon viewing it.
