I'm here because of Tindersticks, period. This was on Sopranos? Interesting. I've been addicted to this music since probably before Sopranos was a twinkle in the writer's eye, it's addicting as hell.
@Klavs45 I also found this band through the Sopranos, couldnt work out the language first of all and then had to track it down.Makes me cry,i am 61 and i am so in love with the words and phrasing,so much emotion,i defy anyone not to be moved by the haunting voice and the sadness and joy of the lyrics
KCRW & Chris Douridas broke this band in the early 90s years before the Soprano Staff used it to suport Tony's deprssion...great that it gave the bad greater exposure as there are truely the real deal.....real artists.....just listen.....
YESH! I got it from The Sopranos too!! :D So much good music on that show.
BTW It's cause Tony was lying in bed heaps because of the medication, and the lyrics relate to Carmela going around with that melancholy (depressed) smile, while Tony has "been too busy looking at himself to notice the tiny tears in her eyes".
This perfect describes my relationship with my girlfriend over the past year. We're on our last leg, and I'm moving out October 1st. Powerful stuff, is pain...
Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. ~MATTHEW 7:1-2
If folk want to chat about The Sopranos, then go on a Sopranos forum......Tindersticks were/are a fantastic band. This song is just one of many that reminds how great they were/are....
Check out 'If She's Torn' and also 'Another Night In' for further proof.....
I wouldn't have heard this song if not for the Sopranos. Season 1, episode 11, and it was used twice--first Tony in a profound depression, hallucinating, sitting in the shower in his robe looking strung out of his mind. The second usage was for the assassination attempt on Tony. It's used brilliantly in both instances--probably the two best scenes in one of the five best episodes of one of the five best TV shows in history--so the association is nothing, nothing, nothing to be ashamed of.
"This song is a soundtrack on its own. No need to put this gem as background to some gangsta tv show."
Tindersticks are a fantastic band but can I just point out that the Sopranos is ALOT more than some 'gangsta tv show'. One of the greatest works of genius to grace television in the English speaking world which the use of this song only proves.
enough already with that sopranos crap. you fools need to listen to the entire 2nd Tindersticks album (untitled). This song is a soundtrack on its own. No need to put this gem as background to some gangsta tv show.
@ruben1million what are you talking about? At one point the sopranos was the highest rated television show in history, its a little more than some "gangsta tv show:" and if you watched the episode you would know how well this song fit with the situation. douche.
Tony was about to come out of his depression right after this song. He was at the peek of his prescription drug use. Remember he was sitting in the shower when they played this. I so wish that series was still running. "Tiny Tears" for sure.
great song, i remember it from a few years back..off to see them at manchester cathedral in march, hope it's as good as the albert hall gig i last went to....
Yeah the producers had a good grasp on uk music and used it to good effect throughout the run of the Sopranos. It struck a chord with USA audiences who were not always familiar with the soundtrack. Oh and yes this was a good song.
@maslany90 Same here. The first time I saw that episode and heard this song I frantically went online to find out who it was. :) Such a great episode too!
Still, given the content of this great song, I can't believe how many people responding have ignored its lyrics & got on with their petty little arguments - as if they matter by comparison.
@ATiredDogsMouth No real grudge against the Sopranos, it was more of a gripe about the way that really good but obscure tunes seem to be only defined or accessed as incidental music in tv or films.
The stuggling artist. Well I have known them here in LA and a few who hit it big. Guess what, they still take the money. The struggling artist is a ploy they use as part of their artistic act.
You sound like someone who knows the best way for others to handle their struggles. If you weren't merely one person with one perspective, it might make more sense. Look up the word "sympathy". You seem to have the word confused with "empathy". Neither you or I can be sympathetic to everyone. We can't possibly know how everyone else feels, therefore, we can't speculate on the best way for them to deal with their difficulties.
@brwhizz and kalifornication. I think both of you bring up a good point as to what this song is about. The lyrics do suggest that because of our own self pity we can be apathetic or unaware about the others close to us that suffer just as much, but all have there way of dealing with it. Although we are in the same boat in an ocean of tears, there is no expression of empathy and it only increases the feeling of isolation.
I've been listening to the Tindersticks for more than a decade (this song came up in '94) I just think it's not cool that this masterpiece is now being associated with the sopranos show.
You are right, but if not for Sopranos, I wouldn't have discovered this band... Just wouldnt know about it. This way many people found out this band exists.

Massive love to Mark Radcliffe for introducing this wonderful band and incredible song to a generation of students in the mid 90's.
Radio 1, 10pm-midnight, Monday - Friday, Mark and the Boy Lard. Greatest radio show ever.
Their final broadcast, when Tindersticks were live in the studio and closed the show with Tiny Tears is an ever abiding memory.
