Dude, you just saved me!!! Long story short, I couldn't get my PS3 back on, she was on her way out, but I needed to get the data off the HDD. Couldn't get it out of standby cause the touch sensors were not working, I power cycled it (long story) and now the controllers didn't get her out of standby by either. I had a game in there that I need out also and that when it hit me, putting a disk in gets the system out of standby...MONEY!!!! Got the Game out and put a old DVD in to kick start it!
Sent you a couple PM's. Not sure if you have your preferences to notify your email of incoming messages. Hope to hear from you! Could really use the help.
hi junker, i have a ps3 that had the problem of blue light on all the while, i tried to follow your method, had resetted both arms, but it seems the ps3 is still thought there's a disk in it, any advice?
@darude87 Check the small board in the lower right of the drive that has the switches. There may be one that's had the top broken off, so now the system can't "press" it to close the switch, and the drive doesn't know there's no disk now.
i have an odd problem, my ps3 will eject games just fine, but it will not let me insert them. When i try it does not suck them in the blue light just blinks then goes solid, after this i was thinking it might be the sliders on the "piece of shit device" but im not sure
@Darkxlink1 Maybe you've got broken switches on the small board in the lower left of the drive. Depending on which switch broke, the system may get an incorrect reading and think there's a disc in when the drive is empty.
lol... why do it this way when all u have to do is hold the eject button in with the (YLOD) and it will automatically send out ur disk :D jst got mine :)
You are my god. This fixed my newer 80GB Metal Gear Edition PS3. The bluray assembly is a tad different. No screws on guides on the inside, it just lifts right up, and under the grey shell, mine only had 2 screws and then 2 clips, instead of 5 screws. Otherwise very similar. Got my Batman Arkham City Back, everything is working in and out again good as new. Thank you very much for this great video and tips. Made this so easy.
I have the YLOD. If I were to follow your steps, but not bother resetting it to the 'No Disk' position, would I be able to simply press the eject button once I fix the YLOD?
hey just wanted to update you on that ps3 I was trying to fix. I left it unplugged for a week and when I plugged it back in it was working again(no blinking red light problem). I also put the gears into the insertion drive thing and it ejects and pulls discs properly now. Thanks again!
I used this to try to repair a ps3 that someone threw away but the ps3 won't suck any discs in. The previous owner tried to repair it and I assume they may have lost some parts. I don't see the green "chip" with a screw in it(around the front of the white spindle clamp area) with the red wire so I assume that's what the problem is, right?
@junker15 ok yeah you're right it turned out the ribbon underneath it wasn't connected and after I connected it the disc slides in halfway now. I opened it and put the disc through the front while it was open and it seems the black lower rack doesn't move when the white "piece of sh*t"(lol) piece tries to pull in the disc. I also dropped 2 small gears from the white disc insertion thing and have no clue where they go. Both sides move when I move either side though so idk how important they are.
@rageReq I have a video on these new PS3 fat "disc insertion drive" parts, where the gears go. There should be three of them, all of the same type. It's a bit tricky to reassemble it thanks to Sony being cheaper.
@junker15 alright I watched it. It seems pretty simple aside from having to replace the side with the gears without being able to look at the underside, but now I have another problem lol. I turned on the ps3 to play it a bit before I try putting the gears in when it suddenly turned off and now has a blinking red light. It seems to do that when the fan is about to come on but when I do the fan test the fan runs fine. Any ideas? I'm going to just try getting out any dust for now. And thanks!
@junker15 (continuation of earlier comment) oh and yeah its a slightly different model than the one in the video. A few less screws on the inside, the disc insertion thing has no screws, and the ribbon underneath it is plugged in underneath the power supply. I put the disc into place manually and closed the disc drive and the ps3 reads the games fine, only problem is to load or eject a disc I have to keep opening it up.
Also it wont read any discs because i believe it is misaligned and it doesn't spin. Also the left lever does not move with the right lever when i move the metal piece under the drive.
@MBisFrenchy If this is the newer drive, it works a bit differently than the old model I have in this video. On the new drive, the metal arm on the back only hooks into one side.
Hello I recently opened my 40gb Cechh01 (Black PSU) it originally just had a bad laser and would take and eject discs correctly until i replaced the laser with the correct model but now it makes a grinding noise and no where on youtube does it show where to fix this? I originally had an issue also with the front sensor putting the plastic piece up keeping discs from entering but now i put it down. I believe it has something to do with the alignment. Can anyone message me on how to fix this?
hey thanks alot, just wondering if you could help with a slight problem. my disc drive wont manually take in my disc like it should do, ive done everything in this video and it still wont take in my disc, kind of like it cant detect that im putting a disc in?
@TOMMYQWERTYUIOP This might be a bad disc sensor. If your drive has a disc sensor and it won't take the disc in when you insert it, try inserting it about halfway in. The drive should take the disc at that time. If it doesn't, you might want to try checking the big data cable going to the mainboard from the drive. If there is a problem with this cable, the drive will appear to be dead.
@junker15 ah, I see now, you are right. I can't thank you enough for that vid. I spent about an hour reading useless forum posts and watching about 20 other worthless youtube fix videos, until I came to yours. Called Sony today and they wanted $100. I said F it and went for it, sliced my fingers open on the metal casing, 3 gears fell out, but in the end everything went back in OK covered in some blood thanks to you. Ejects and takes in new CD's now just like new, 20 min fix. You the man
i have a 40GB original PS3. it powers on it plays downloadable games, i was just playing infamous which i downloaded a couple days ago. the eject button doesnt respond at all. the blue and green indicator lights are both on. when i power the ps on i here the disk spin and then stop, WHAT DO I DO!!!!!!
thank you junker i just picked up a old 60gb ps3 for $20 bucks and the only thing wrong with it was a disk wouldn't eject and was stuck in it and the best part is the game was black ops so it was a pretty good score great vid and awesome directions i now have working ps3 :)
@MrThemajestic2010 The new PS3 fat drives are different than the one pictured here, but it works basically the same way. The optical drive top part in particular is the same as the old version.
Hi mate i just like to say thks for making this vid.I had this problem whit my ps3 but didn't know how to fix it.And had bought a new ps3.And today i found your channel and watched this vid and thought i would try to fix my old 60gb ps3.And it worked ,all is well.So i guess my little son is going to be happy now because he's been wanting a ps3 for a while and he's had to play on mine.So tomorrow a big surprise for him.So thks again for making these vids for us out here.
This is pretty great of you, thanks and it helped a lot. My problem was basically my old 60GB got YLOD and I wanted GT5 out of it (cause i got a new slim). I looked at a video on how to actually open the ps3 but yours shows how to disassemble the actual BR drive so thanks for that.
Actually it only worked once. When the first disc is ejected, it will not accept a new disc. It does not grab the disc and pull it in. All the gears and arms are in the correct position. What could be causing this? Please help.
I watched six or seven videos on how to reset the Blu-ray drive and this is the ONLY one that told you EVERYTHING you need to know. Thank you soooo much!! I couldn't have done it without your help. If I have any other ps3 issues I will be sure to check you first.
i need some major help with my ps3. i have an original 60 gb model and i just cleaned it a few days ago and reassembled it, no problems. then when i try to put a disk in, the blue light just flashes and the mechanisms to pull the dick in do nothing and i can onlyput the disk in half way. i didnt leave any disk in when i cleaned it. i have no clue what to do and if you could help me that would be awesome. i dont want a slim or some other used ps3!
@XekylXIII That sounds like the plastic drive top isn't on quite right. Try taking the plastic top off again, making sure everything is still lined up in its "ejected" position, and placing the plastic top back on as detailed here and in my "optical drive top" video.
I thin my drive just misaligned or something this morning, i think i have a newer/old fat model im hoping to fix this with your videos. thank you good sir.
I had to put a new input drive in, used you video (thanks, it was great) then had to use this one cause I didn't know how to get the white tabs to go down. I followed your instructions, making sure to do exactly what you did, but when I put in a disk it makes a horrid clicking noise, it stops but the machine won't recognize the disk. When I hit eject it just makes the clicking noise again and won't give up the disk. Help please!
Hey junker15 first off thanks for putting up great videos that are worth watching on YouTube not to mention detailed and informative! I followed your videos and I'd say my drive is 90% fixed lol! When I flex the drive rollers out it triggers the switch causing all the gears to spin and the laser to try and read, however the try does not engage and raise :/ any ideas what would be happening? I have a feeling that it's the small white arm that sits on the right side of the drive the one that has
@junker15 I believe they are both seated correctly cause the arms flex out smooth and right, They can only go in one way correct? If you have time I posted up a video of what its doing. Thanks for the reply I appreciate your help :)
when i was doing it on my 80g a metal tab came out of the black box and i don't know if that is important and will cause the ps3 to just fail when reading the disk so where dose it go in the black box?
@BlackstickZack That sounds like a piece that goes on the outside of the drive. If it's just a piece of metal with a small hole at one end, this shouldn't affect the operation of the drive. It can be secured to the silver screw at the rear of the drive on the bottom. Just make sure this metal piece will contact other metal in the PS3 and not a circuit board or something. (Different revisions from mine have different cutouts in the shield.)
@dredhead172002 You may want to do a clear disc check to see if all the lasers appear to be working. If any are bad, the laser is faulty. It also may be a matter of your laser appearing to work well enough for the system to spin the disc, but not good enough to read it.
AHHHHHHH! im going crazy! please help me. I followed the steps showed and the disk only goes in about 95% and doesn't make it to the laser (circle part) . it sticks out of the front maybe like a cm. ??? HELP, SOS! SMPS3 (save my ps3 ) =(
hi your videos are awesome, they have helped me so much in the past. i have taken my ps3 a part a few times in the past to change laser or clean it, but this time i forgot i had a disc in the drive. so when i got it all back together, the ps3 wouldn't accept the disc, tried easy and complicated way. watched your videos, and followed them step by step, but still no luck any ideas?
I had a question I was trying to get the tiny yellow side sensor off and messed up and ripped the wires from the plug. Is there a way to fix it or just leave it as it is. thanks.
@SuicideMonkey13 If the damage is not too great, you can try using my disc sensor videos to fix it. Otherwise, the wire and the top sensor go for about $10 US
@junker15 thanks for this video. I had replaced my laser and mech and couldn't understand why any discs I put in after the fix didn't load properly and wouldn't eject when requested. It was the white "arms" that shouldn't be behind those two holes as you mention in this video that fixed it for me. Thanks again! :)
Great Video, but I have a slight problem. My disc drive will not automatically accept the disc. I have to manually push the disc all the way into the drive but even then, I can't push far enough so my drive still doesn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help I appreciate it.
@MattLegs3786 This may be a data cable problem. If the drive acts like it has absolutely no power at all, check the seating of the big data cable going from the drive to the mainboard. Even if your disc sensor is busted, the system should still take the disc in once you have it pushed in past the center hole.
Thanks junker15, everyone seems to cover disassembly but no one really mentions reassembly or more precisely to the "check these two holes here for white" - which in the end was causing my drive to "eat" disks as I hadn't seen how those bits aligned to their tracks. Now to find a good laser, I guess...
My roller mechanism that junker15 takes apart at 3:10 came apart. I got it back together but it doesnt have it's spring-e-ness to it anymore. I still have the spring but i dont know how to put it back on. Does anyone know the right way to put this spring back on?
Thanks, junker. This video saved my PS3. My nephew visited our house and put an old PS2 game in the PS3 that had some residue from a sticker on it. He left shortly afterwards, so I don't know if he knew it was stuck or not, but i do know that I'm glad you posted this video 'cause all we would be able to play is downloaded games or Spiderman 3 without it. You rock!
Can't thank you enough for this video, my old 1st gen ps3 was outta warranty and it was having trouble reading discs, cracked it open and made the problem even worse, long story but, this video helped me put my blu ray drive back together to get everything back to normal. Still has trouble reading discs so I suspect it is the laser, but again thanks so much for this video.
Once again I have to thank you junker15 for this video. It helped me get out my stuck Tekken6 disk from a yellow lighted PS3.
I do recommend not messing with the disk sensor connector, mine didn't get out easily and I severed the wires. Instead take off the other end (the green plate); it's easier.
Is this tutorial work for a first gen ps3? Everything was going fine but yesterday I rent a movie and my ps3 does't see the disk and I'm not able to eject the disk. Last month I got a YLOD and I repair it but when I disassembling my ps3 I look at my driver and it doesn't look exactly like your's. I need your help plz.
@unopop The particular model in my videos is my old CECHG01 (40GB made in late 2007). This may work for different drives, but I can't verify that since the drive in my video is the only one I have access to.
Thanks for posting this vid! I just replaced my laser and when I went to test it my disk got stuck inside, wouldn't play or eject, it just made a messed up noise. Not sure where I went wrong but this vid pretty much saved me, it's working fine now.
@MrDCsniper2 Check my "loader alignment" video for additional things to check. The arm has disengaged from the metal pivot arm on the back, so you'll have to reconnect it.
@HaNnAm134 Doesn't work because there are parts in the top that are spring-loaded, which would get all jammed up if you just put it back together and brought the transport down.
junker15 is the best ps3 youtube videos ever, you all should hail him because he gives us this gold , your videos are always helpful junker15 keep it up bud
thank you for the video. followed your directions plus did a reflow and now it's good as new. thanks again.

Hello im from Japan.
Thank you man, you saved the day!
I was so stucked with this driver after a YLOD repair. (it takes 2 attempts)
The two grey "China Wall" pieces pop-up in the front when i opened the driver.
My tip to everyone is to stay calm, never open the driver, only if the PS3 is absolutely dead.

lad2050 1 year ago
@lad2050 You may want to check the metal arm underneath to make sure it's seated in both of the plastic side arms correctly...
junker15 1 year ago
@junker15 I believe they are both seated correctly cause the arms flex out smooth and right, They can only go in one way correct? If you have time I posted up a video of what its doing. Thanks for the reply I appreciate your help :)

when i was doing it on my 80g a metal tab came out of the black box and i don't know if that is important and will cause the ps3 to just fail when reading the disk so where dose it go in the black box?
BlackstickZack 1 year ago
@BlackstickZack That sounds like a piece that goes on the outside of the drive. If it's just a piece of metal with a small hole at one end, this shouldn't affect the operation of the drive. It can be secured to the silver screw at the rear of the drive on the bottom. Just make sure this metal piece will contact other metal in the PS3 and not a circuit board or something. (Different revisions from mine have different cutouts in the shield.)

dredhead172002 1 year ago
@dredhead172002 You may want to do a clear disc check to see if all the lasers appear to be working. If any are bad, the laser is faulty. It also may be a matter of your laser appearing to work well enough for the system to spin the disc, but not good enough to read it.

@1Deejay7 Could be the plastic top part not being lined up right. See my "optical drive top" video.

hi your videos are awesome, they have helped me so much in the past. i have taken my ps3 a part a few times in the past to change laser or clean it, but this time i forgot i had a disc in the drive. so when i got it all back together, the ps3 wouldn't accept the disc, tried easy and complicated way. watched your videos, and followed them step by step, but still no luck any ideas?

I had a question I was trying to get the tiny yellow side sensor off and messed up and ripped the wires from the plug. Is there a way to fix it or just leave it as it is. thanks.
SuicideMonkey13 1 year ago
@SuicideMonkey13 If the damage is not too great, you can try using my disc sensor videos to fix it. Otherwise, the wire and the top sensor go for about $10 US
junker15 1 year ago
@junker15 thanks for this video. I had replaced my laser and mech and couldn't understand why any discs I put in after the fix didn't load properly and wouldn't eject when requested. It was the white "arms" that shouldn't be behind those two holes as you mention in this video that fixed it for me. Thanks again! :)

Hi
thank you for this great video.
i had the no eject problem and its fixed. but i sill have small problem:
when the device is off and i start it i get a green light but that he scan for disc (blue light) how can i fix it? the tray is empty
viperain007 1 year ago
@viperain007 Most likely a broken disc sensor wire. This problem makes the system think there's a disc being inserted when there is nothing there.

Great Video, but I have a slight problem. My disc drive will not automatically accept the disc. I have to manually push the disc all the way into the drive but even then, I can't push far enough so my drive still doesn't work. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help I appreciate it.
MattLegs3786 1 year ago
@MattLegs3786 This may be a data cable problem. If the drive acts like it has absolutely no power at all, check the seating of the big data cable going from the drive to the mainboard. Even if your disc sensor is busted, the system should still take the disc in once you have it pushed in past the center hole.

I did all this and everything seems right but when i insert disc the blue light flashes but it wont take the disc. Help!!!
rok3301 1 year ago
Thanks junker15, everyone seems to cover disassembly but no one really mentions reassembly or more precisely to the "check these two holes here for white" - which in the end was causing my drive to "eat" disks as I hadn't seen how those bits aligned to their tracks. Now to find a good laser, I guess...

Thanks junker. I can confirm that the disk drive in the original 60gb CECHA01 BC units are the same as the 40GB.

I need your help plz.
unopop 1 year ago
@unopop The particular model in my videos is my old CECHG01 (40GB made in late 2007). This may work for different drives, but I can't verify that since the drive in my video is the only one I have access to.

@unopop how were you able to fix the YLOD on your ps3???......could you help me!!!!

Thanks for posting this vid! I just replaced my laser and when I went to test it my disk got stuck inside, wouldn't play or eject, it just made a messed up noise. Not sure where I went wrong but this vid pretty much saved me, it's working fine now.

The left arm for the tray lifting on my doesnt engage anymore...what should i do?
MrDCsniper2 1 year ago
@MrDCsniper2 Check my "loader alignment" video for additional things to check. The arm has disengaged from the metal pivot arm on the back, so you'll have to reconnect it.

once you take the disk out can you not just put it all back together and then just hit eject so that it will reset its self or does that not work
HaNnAm134 1 year ago
@HaNnAm134 Doesn't work because there are parts in the top that are spring-loaded, which would get all jammed up if you just put it back together and brought the transport down.
