These guy are freaking LEGENDS man. Nobody in Hollywood even comes close to being a tough ass kicking dude like these 2. They would eat and shit Vin Diesel and the Rock, and put Stephen Segal in the Hospital. Don't get me wrong, I like Segal, Rock, and Diesel, but they don't compare to these guys, except for Chuck Norris and John Saxon, 2 badass old timers too.
Bill was one of hollywoods hardest men, very articulate, spoke several languages fluently and is well respected.a genuine good man who also is hard as nails.
Man, I gotta say this. These are two men who are gonna beat the hell out of each other. Yet, look how they are to one another. Will defends Clint's woman aganist that asshole; "That's not polite." Clint says "your money's no good here" and buys Will's drinks. Class. Why aren't there male characters like these in the movies anymore?
@MrBastilleDay "Why aren't there male characters like these in the movies anymore?" American culture has been feminized. Hollywood is a predominantly progressive liberal culture now, that doesn't understand the inherent noble qualities of being male. Feminine characteristics are lauded and idealized to the exclusion of traditionally male characteristics.
Movies like this?? Gone! Never to come back again. Kids will make fun of this shit, but let the kids of today grow up like we 30,40, smthns and beyond did. Most would look for a hole to hide in.
@littlefuzzer - Bill's living out here in L.A. He was recently inducted into the Muscle Beach Venice Bodybuilding Hall of Fame at a really cool celebration that was worthy of his contributions. It's nice to know that people still know where to give credit when it's due.
@voderick Umm, I'm neither one. The fact that I said I was a girl and that I love Bill and Clint should distinctly say no, I'm not gay, and of course anybody who loves animals loves Clyde.
Bill Smith should've competed in bodybuilding with his physique or done a hero action movie of his own. I have a feeling a little Charles Bronson was in his influence.
I've been a huge Big Bill Smith fan from his days on the terrific western TV show Laredo(1965-'67).Been following his film/TV career ever since. He's a top weightlifter, boxer,& martial artist in real life. He's also one of the most fearsome & intimidating looking guys ever! Yet,he's known as a real gentleman & decent human being who is well liked & respected by anyone he has worked with.As for the nasty roles he sometimes plays, that can be chalked up to what a fine actor he truly is on screen.
Smith shows a lot of charisma in this film. I really like the friendship between his character and Eastwood's: masculine, competitive, and yet respectful. "Any Which Way You Can" will probably make few Top 100 lists, but I enjoy it just for watching these guys play off one another.
@PaladinWF Great points and that is why I always liked the movie. The mutual admiration between the characters really made the movie. Smith was supposed to be the bad guy but you could not help but root for him too. Great actor/tough guy.
Love Clint, especially Unforgiven, Pale Rider, Josey Walese, all the spaghetti westerns, even Kelly's Heroes. I had to call out William Smith though. What a man. I read his quick bio at several sites. He did just about everything. Strong, intelligent. Come on William, give the rest of us Joe Blows a chance with the ladies...geez.
Amen. When he was not doing a film, which is a real "hit or miss" type of business, he sold encyclopaedias, for Encyclopeadia Britannica, mostly at trade shows. One time, my wife, who was a whizz, was working with him and he tried to close a sale on someone that came in, on her efforts. Well, she reamed him a new "assho.." verbally and he slunk away like a mouse. Not because he isn't a strong man, which he obviously is, but because he was accused of "invading her turf". That's character.

It was one of the highlights of my life to meet Mr. Smith at a cult movie convention a few years ago in Ohio (Cinema Wasteland Convention). He walked into the hotel bar and although he looked quite a bit older than he does here I immediately recognized him. I called out to him "Big Bill Smith!" (his nickname) and he instantly walked over to our table and shook my hand. He had an intense grip for a 70 year old man and we had a great conversation that night. A classic old school guy.
@Dompanther5 These movies defined me and my outlook on things..kind of old school. It carried over later( was an NCAA wrestling champion in college) and later became a lawyer..and a good father.
@littlefuzzer - Good for you man! I know exactly what you mean. I've become independently successful as well and did it all by adhering to the old school code. Even though it seems like this world is going to hell in a handbasket it's worth it to get away to places where you find old school thinkers every now and then. Also THANKS for becoming a good father! We certainly need more of them in this world.
@Dompanther5 Thanks for the props..its hard to find old school thinkers like myself.Usually most of the dads I meet are wearing head to toe Under Armor clothing apparel with their faces buried in their Blackberrys texting themsleves into oblivion. Most ..not all..but most are little namby pambys..where these people came from ..I do not know..but it's good to see someone who enjoys these great movies like myself..take care brother.By the where is ole Bill Smith living these days?
I always like the mutual admiration Smiths characters and Eastwoods had for each other. Even at the end when the fights over and they walk away buddies. After knocking the crap out of each other. William Smith is awesome!
especially when you understand that mr smith was accepting that he would never be as famous as clint and he was ok with that. Imagine the crowd at the premier shouting clint and mr smith and clint just nodding and acknologing that fact.
Always best to take of problems with fists than guns or lawyers. Punch out in an open field out in the country and then when they learn your respect, shake hands and buy each other a beer.
@dmljm2 This scene and the fight scene on the ship with Nick Nolte as Tom Jordache in Rich Man, Poor Man are the two I'm most familiar with involving Smith. In real life he would have cleaned both Clint's and Nolte's clocks--at the same time.
@dmljm2 I read that Schwarzenegger took a dislike to Smith on the Conan The Barbarian set because Smith could beat him at arm wrestling. He made even Ah-nold look like a little girlie man.
This film was great! 'Every Which Way But Loose', the first film in this series with Clint and his Orang-utan was good but for a sequel, this was better I thought. I remember watching these films as a kid in the 80s. I still enjoy them as much today as I did then, like I do most of 'Clint's' films.
@1963builder You are - according to your profile - my age. Do you remember WS playing the part of Falconetti in the mid 70`s series "Rich Man Poor Man ?" He had a fight with Nick Nolte ( Alias Tom Jordache ) It`s got to be the most notorious fight in TV Movie History.
After what transpired in the RMPM series I saw an interview WS gave on British TV, and he said that he couldn`t walk down the streets of America without having bottles thrown at him, as a result of what he did to "Tom."
"You like pain, you eat it like candy" William Smith, America's toughest bad guy ever!!! I loved these movies, they remind me of good times. Thanks for posting.
AWESOME, FUN, GREAT, LIGHT-HEARTED MOVIE. I watched this as a child.... over and over, have probably seen this (and Every Which Way But Loose) over 40 times over the years. Clint is Great, but William Smith is a total bad ass, in this movie AND in real life... look him up on the web, VERY interesting guy!
wish I could find more videos with William Smith I have seen pictures of him when he use to do bodybuilding on the side from acting
