Probably the shot was at a 65 degree angle, falling at 200-300 feet / sec, and the bullet landing at the body at about a 90 degree angle for skin penetration . Although you are right, I got hit by a falling bullet once, it didn't puncture, but it fell like someone smacked my shoulder with a hammer.
