It not regular xp its Tiny XP Pro, stripped down to like 120mb, so i did it at the time to avoid gobbling up resources. Not to mention this was filmed over a year ago, and i still would bother with vista as a server. Just had to upgrade the drives in it, totallying 4 TB now :)
im thinking about what i want to do for a career and i wanted to know what u do, and if it is fun? i want to do some kind of support technician i think but im not sure. it would really help if u could tell me about ur job. it looks like it is really laid back, and that is what i want. i mean ur building a pc during work and taking support calls it looks awesome.
Yeah, im an IT Manager and Software engineer, its a laid back environment, but i do this all day and am multitasking it with stuff off camera you dont see, yeah im on the phone alot during the video. Tis a good job :)
cool video well done! i have problems with mine i built it all right then i turned it on, and it said install boot disc so i put a vista install disc in the drive and then it all went wierd and suddenly it said hardware failure and turned of.
Good job. I have a black P182. Wire management was a pain in the ass because my 8800gts blocked the 24 pin power connecter from reaching the motherboard! I had to do one hell of a cable routing technique.
Its not good practice, its generally considered a risk to static electricity damaging delicate componants, but ive done my fare share of under table repairs on machines and ive never been a victim of carpet induce static damage.
it's so fucking cool that humans have evolved from opening nuts with rocks and wielding sticks to building advanced machines that can reach outer space.
Damn lol that is a very nice case. Is it the Antec P182 or P180? And no offence but it would probably take me shorter time to build lol. But very nice computer.
I was at work taking support calls hence why i disspear several times, engage several people in conversation and am on the phone a fare bit too. Hehe, though it wernt no race.
i only approved your comment to tell you that your an idiot, this case cost £65, prob $120, and it is one of the sweetest cases out there. im not gunna have my most valuable system housed in some nasty cheap bastard case from ebay.
There is 3 Fans, all silent running, one is the large fan at the back of the case for extraction, the second is at the bottom in front of the PSU and behind hard drive caddy1,i added an optional extra fan in front of hard drive caddy2.Thermally -excellent,acoustically - excellent (tri layered panels, rubber gromits & compartments),my only gripe is that the cables from the PSU (located at bottom)by standard would not reach the mobo connections.I made up an extension and routed it around the case.
Cool Video, 2.5tb? Whoa thats a crazy machine, what do you use it for? We built one recently but only 1tb for our Radio Station... What exactly do you have in that beast?
Its my media server, whuch firstly hosts my photo website (25,000 photo databse kinda thing) then it holds my media content, every single thing ive ever downloaded, hundreds of movies, every epeisode of nearly every show, every cartoon, every stand up show, litterally everything. I then stream it via network to ma 42" tv via XBMC
Theres many softwares you can use, ulead video studio has most the stuff i need. I built this at work and was on and off taking technical calls all day but id say a server with this much stuff about an hour 2 hours after install. I spent a bit of time making cables for this and routing them very carefully round the inside of the case.
Google it, they are great, i got it coz it was silent, not only has it got tri layered aluminum paneling, comparmentalised, but they have installed rubber gromits anywhere that a hard drive or optical drive screw in, and anywhere that metal touchs metal is also lined with rubber, all vibrations, all noise is gone. plus its termally designed to run cool too. I recommened it.
The Entec case has a moduler hard drive caddy at the bottom, it stressed the SATA cable and the connector cracked, the connection was made but not completed and stalled the Bios Post, was a fun problem to diagnose. used the glue gun to secure it and cable tied it to the hdd power connector which is more robust.
Antec 180, Its massively different to standard cases, thus came a few extra obsticles. The hardest to overcome was the psu being located at the bottom meant that the cord would not stretch to the mobo connector, had to make an extension at work, enough to reach and also allow me to channel it. sweet case though
After setting this up at home, i set it to host my website, act as a nas server to hold all my media downloads, front my 35k track multi room music system on the screen too. Its running like a dream, been running nearly a year since i did this vid. Fault free. :)
lol, tell me about it, no one likes a nasty little gremlin popping up when your all excited about making something, especially when your filming it :) hehe
It wasnt XP this time :O The Entec case has a moduler hard drive caddy at the bottom, it stressed the SATA cable and the connector cracked, the connection was made but not completed and stalled the Bios Post, was a fun problem to diagnose. used the glue gun to secure it and cable tied it to the hdd power connector which is more robust.
I run my Nas server, webserver, email server, my multiroom music system(which i wrote myself)and use the screen as a 19" picture frame when not in use, all on 2gb with tiny xp (a stripped down version of xp),only people thinking in 1 dimention are keen to stuffloads of ram in and insist on vista, currently the shitest OS available, thinking that ramming more in instantly makes it better, usually people who fuck all out the requirements of software on hardware.
i know, i dont have vista, or want it, and i only have 1.5 gigs so im not a ram-a-holic, but it never hurts to run 16 gigs if you can. also, xp cant even do 3 gigs. if you didnt notice i use osx which suports 16 gigs(posibly 32)
Well you say it never hurts but its pointless putting more in than you could ever use, this system litterally does everything, its not a pc i work on, it serves, its my server. Its spec reflected its purpose,i do alot of graphics, vid editing, rendering, now that needs everything you can throw at it.But again spec reflects purpose.Sorry to go off on one before, had loads of "ram o holics" on here telling me i should build to their spec and then listing rediculous componants in a poor attempt to impress.
Is that case closed? If so thats why it had trouble posting. Clearly a case of tempting the fates cause you'd just have to open it up after your first boot anyways :P
The case being open has nothing to do with post failing (no intrusion detection), i reported earlier that it was stress on the SATA cable going into the moduler hard drive bays at the bottom stressing the connector out cracking it. Fixed it with a glue gun and cable tie.
Did your computer start right up on the first try, because my build won't start at all, I turn the power on and nothing happens, I've checked to see that it's all connected and everything is properly connected, I have no idea what's wrong.

Me too, its such a great case, everything from rubber grommits, to tri layered alumium panels, everywhere that metal touches metal is lined with rubber and even the compartments are cool. Had to make some cables up though, the one from the psu to motherboard was a toughy to make

i just finished putting a computer together to! only when i start it up it says "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" does that mean that i need an OS cd?? Some one HLEP ME!!!!!!!!!!
Thats perfectly normal. Yes you need a boot CD, generally a XP or Vista CD/DVD will work, make sure you set your CD/DVD as primary boot drive, if you do that itll start up the setup wizard which will allow you to format your Hard Disk and continue to setup your operating system.
ok thx! maybe i have the wrong vista cd. i have a vista anytime upgrade dsisc. and i think for that you need an OS already instaled. NOW I NEDED TO GO BUY A XP CD.
Yeah there are alot of vista "UPGRADES" floating about, most of which are useless from scratch setups. Hope it goes well, let me know how you get on. Cheers

You have a good eye, was waiting for someone to spot that, the connector on the Sata drive had split very slightly and the connections wernt being made evenly across the pins on the drive. Was tricky to track down as everything had worked, even detected the drive in the bios :s, if you watch closely you see me glue gun and tie the connectors back to good health.
hey bigboyce i realy dont know much about computers but im curious, do you think i would have to formatt my harddrive in order to install a motherboard and cpu, the harddrive has windows xp on it. thank for your help
Its not impossible to change the entire hardware backbone underneith a Windows XP install but it can be problematic, especially for a novice. Chances are you would have a nasty bluescreen problem on first boot which can be hard to fix. If your XP is legitimate it will detect the hardware changes and demand immediate re activation.
I would recommend you backup your data, or better yet get a seperate Hard drive reinstall everything again, with all your new drivers, copy back your data.
