I played this at Anime Club recently. We all knew it was a crudely cut and pasted film, but my did we enjoy it! This movie is much better with a big screen, good speakers, and a few friends.
if i hot the lottery Mega Millions ($175 million) ill throw all that money into making a REAL robotech movie and make it right with no f*** ups taken or just make it a episode series, so the story line will make sense
@ThePlaidman1985 For an original VHS, all I can say is good luck. The tape itself is ridiculously rare and only pops up on Ebay seemingly once in a blue moon. I suppose you could search the internet for bootleggers selling rips on DVD and asking about the quality of their source. Honestly, finding a clean rip of this is going to be difficult.
@demoskunk What makes it a hack-job? The fact that it uses footage from a futuristic police anime called megazone 23 spliced with Super Dimensional Calvalry Southern Cross!?
@demoskunk Have you seen the re-edited version released in the last box set? They had to remove ALL of the Megazone scenes to comply with distribution and copyright. THAT is the most embarassing hack-job I've seen.
If they were to reboot robotech and make it from where the First Season Left off and Continued with the crew of the SDF1 (Ala Sentinels but original sound and animation from the first season with the character designs aswell) I think the series would do well
@zechs213 Same here, but I think this cartoon have many "hidden" messages, like "(one) world governmant" etc. Maybe that thing will realy happen soon, who knows...
ok don't diss robotech. I grew up on this stuff and not even MSG (Mobile Suit Gundam) can beat it. It is the king of giant machine space franchises and gundam can just get there non-protocultured butts out of here.
Yeah...Macek got a little too caught up in his unnecessary retooling.
If he had just let all the series and movies he used in his versions stand on there own, that's to say if he went with an "adult swim" theater style, rather than forcing material together, I think he could have avoided his infamy.
Anything by Macek after Robotech the Macross Saga is generally awful.
@macross25 Lucas might as well sue the makers of Transformers: The Movie (1986) since a Star Wars like text scroll intro was used for the UK version of that movie.
@MegazoneTwoThree for that matter, the makers of 1930s-40s serials like Flash Gordon might as well sue Lucas, since that's where he admittedly got the idea in the first place. it's an OLD idea folks, and it wasn't Lucas's idea.
@EmSeeSquared There is a major fucking Difference between receiving inspiration for generally original work for an original movie and BADLY re-editing and re-scripting someones work that you had nothing to do with and claiming it as your own
@thebluemaggot who are we talking about here, Lucas or Macek? cuz Lucas is the one with the LIFETIME ACHIEVMENT AWARD, and whose original Star Wars won an academy award for your so-called "bad editing." if we're talking about Macek, i'm not so sure it counts as "stealing", but nevertheless, Macross wouldn't have become so popular, even in Japan, if not for Robotech.
Doesn't make any sense. How the f did the edited version of Macross with Southern Cross and Mospeada tacked on and called Robotech affect the popularity of Macross in Japan? You're the one who should visit the Wizard of Oz instead of the Scarecrow.
@sanjurosama because Macek received input from the japanese studios on how their property should be treated, and when Robotech became successful, it instilled an interest in Macross, one of its source materials.
You aren't still making any kind of sense. Noboru Ishiguro and Shoji Kawamori knew nothing about Robotech in the 80s and Macross was already popular before it.
@EmSeeSquared An "interest in Macross" in the US, maybe, but not in Japan, where it was already a huge success from the start. If it weren't such a success in Japan before Robotech, then the "Macross:DYRL" movie would have come out after Robotech's release and not before ( in 1984 ).
Did the UK version actually have the scrolling credits in the theatrical release? I had a UK VHS and it had the standard credit sequence that appeared on the US version.
@drbotanus I think you might be confusing this with the Transformers: The Movie. The UK release of TF:TM had a scrolling introduction ala Star Wars while the US version just had cast credits.
@thedarthflagger After the Zentradi invasion, and before the Robotech Masters coming in 2029. And yes, these guys are Robotech Masters, but it's set 2 years before their main forces arrived.
@negima47 Transformers: The Movie did the same thing as well. Only difference between this and Transformers compared to Star Wars is the Star Wars movies didn't have a narrator.
Nothing is as good as the first season. You dont get any feel or sympathy for any of these characters at all. They all look to wierd asian. Its nothing without rick hunter and the veritechs.
When did this movie come out? Where does it fit in between all three Robotech series? I know we have the Senitels and now the Shadow Chronicles. But Im so confused still. Someone plz help!!!!
@ndeperson The movie was never offically released in the States bar a test screening in Texas, but got releases in a few European countries and on VHS in the UK for rental.
The movie takes place in 2027, 2 years before the Robotech Masters saga. Harmony Gold have placed the movie, along with The Sentinels into secondary continuity, so they don't count within the main continuity which the 85 episode series and The Shadow Chronicles are part of.
@MegazoneTwoThree Well, I don't know the names of the characters in the original show, and I still have affection for Robotech. The voice cast and dialogue is great. But Harmony Gold hacking more unrelated footage together to try and milk the franchise is pathetic.
Also, Southern Cross was the portion that was most affected by the splicing. You can tell that the original story would make much more sense than the Robotech version.
@demoskunk Well the original idea was to just use Megazone 23 and set it in the first generation of Robotech, the plot was to focus on Mark uncovering the fate of the SDF-1 and the end of the movie would use Macross footage where the SDF-1 returns to Earth.
It was actually Cannon Films demands and the lack of permission to use Macross footage which led to the inclusion of Southern Cross footage and a confusing story. And in the end, it was Cannon's screwed up marketing which canned the movie.
@MegazoneTwoThree Interesting. If this movie had seen wider release, maybe there'd be more Megazone fans in America today.
Also, using footage from two very different looking shows in one movie looks really odd. The only times it happened in Robotech was for a short scene in episode 27(?) with the Triumvirate and in Dana's Story with footage from Macross.
@demoskunk It also didn't help that the Megazone 23 footage was in 35mm while the Southern Cross footage was in 16mm. Carl Macek even told the Cannon guys the 16mm footage would look terrible on the big screen compared to the 35mm footage, but they wanted their movie.
@EreinionEluchil Well it was only released on VHS and it's not exactly easy to find. Took me 4 years to find a copy of it. And this is a better copy then the one that's floating about as a torrent.
@dangermouse5 Sorry, but I don't do torrents at all. I know there is a copy of the movie on torrent sites, you just have to put up with FOR VIEWING PURPOSES ONLY slapped on the bottom of the screen.
@bbt104 Seeing as no Macross characters are in this movie, then no. Although Carl Macek wanted to use Macross: Do You Remember Love? and release it as the Robotech Movie, it has never been released as such. It's a Macross movie, not a Robotech movie.
@billy26100 At this time him, Lisa, and all the other surviving main characters of Macross saga are on the SDF-3 Expadition mission (Watch Robotech 2: the sentinals).
I still remember how excited I was to go see it in the theaters....and then how incredibly DISAPPOINTED I was in it. Carl Macek and the poeple in charge of totally Butchering Megazone 23 should have been CASTRATED for this!!!
Only good thing that came out of it was the semi-cool new ending that was commissioned.
Interesting. Oddly enough Macross was before 82. I know because I watched the English version of Macross called Robotech as a TV series on Buffalo 29 Sunday mornings back in 82 when I was well pretty young; early grade school. StarBlazers I'm sure outdates Mobil Suit Gundam or the Gundam TV series arc; but I never followed that as I saw it as a copy of the Robotech/Macross saga and story line.
I liked this movie better when it was called Megazone 23. Unfortunately for Robotech fans, they won't be able to see the hot sex and ultra violence of Megazone Part 2+ 3.
@nytrospawn i see.... yea i could tell watchin it its still badass but its gayer than the original. the other ones got like more cussing and sex n shit more for adults. fuk it tho u dont kno where i can watch megazone 23 pt 2 and 3 the real ones???
Well the games were based on an 86 episode anime that t released two films The recent shadow chronicles, and this which was screened in texas decades ago but never released. This takes place after the first season (the macross saga) where as the other one took place after the third season (invid invasion)....tony macguire is producing a live action movie.....I'm all acquiver.
If you've been fallowing up with 1980's pop culture, you would know that there are multiple alien invasion and robot take over of the planet earth to come in the next few decades.
1986; it was to tie directly with sequel series Robotech: The Sentinels with the introduction of new characters to the franchise. Due to Tatsunoko Productions (the company Harmony Gold was lesing the footage from) and the distributor Cannon Films's interference many changes happened. Tats didn't want a second Macross film (originally the movie took place during a time the SDF-1 was in deep space) so all Macross footage wasn't available. Cannon wanted more robots and less girls.
Well yeah, it used the first part of the original anime, Megazone 23, which is about a delinquent biker (think Akira) who discovers a top secret government motorcycle, and is chased by the authorities.
This is ridiculous. That's Dana, Bowie, Anglo, Louie Nickels, and the rest of the 15th squadron. Why not just use them in the movie instead of ripping off old footage from the early episodes of Southern Cross.
I can see why Carl Macek won't include this as canon.
You can blame Cannon Films for that. they wanted "More guns and robots" and less girls so Macek needed to add in footage from one of the sagas. He couldn't use MACROSS footage and didn't see how MOSPEADA could work, so he went with SOUTHERN CROSS.
Had Cannon not made those demands, the movie would have most likely remained in the timeframe of the first ROBOTECH war during the period of when the SDF-1 was in space.
Yeah I think MegaZone 23 would have worked better as a prequel to the Macross timeline. Both Meag Zone and Macross seem to take place in the same time period.
Southern Cross' look is far to alien, both films are way to dichotomous to work as a re-edit.
Yeah i know but Macross and Megazone's anime style matches a bit more. It's two bad because Megazone could have been a great prequel. The motor bike could have been the first robotechnology prototype that the United earth forces were working on and the fact that they were hiding a planetary invasion from earth would have propelled the storyline. it sucks that they missed the mark because of licensing agreements gone awry.
The transforming cycle idea was also intended as the predecessor to the cyclones of the Next Generation, so it made sense to be here in 2nd generation.
I've seen the Macross movie, but not this one. Macross movie was really good, but I'll have to get through all the parts of this film here on youtube in order to judge this one, but so far, I'm liking it!
This is just trippy. I've never saw Robotech but I have seen Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada and Megazone 23. Seeing it cut together like this knowing that it was the only way to get it released stateside is very fascinating.
Lots of complaints but in reality, Robotech is an amazing piece of work. The way the stories (for the most part) fit in together, including mention of a non-existent Admiral Hunter in 3rd generation, and the almost 100% original score, is a very big accomplishment.
Macek says this was the worst dub in his career he was forced to do. But this is the 2nd version. Only parts of the 1st nonMacek version appear to be floating around but was never completed. Macek says he has all of it. It had no Southern Cross footage, nor did The 3rd Fan Club version that was the most accurate dub made which used the 2nd's audio from Megazone 23 and restored the lost scenes with subs. It even fits better into the Robotech timeline and still takes place in space not Earth.
I'd blame the guys at Cannon for the major problems with this movie as it was them that wanted more action, guns and robots which resulted in the removal of Megazone23 footage and the inclusion of Southern Cross footage.
@ronquila Respect the dead, you asshole. Delete this post to avoid making a further ass of yourself. Macek was a legend, and he actually intended to do more of a straight dub of this movie until the studios interfered. GTFO and don't come back.
@ApolloKun777 In all fairness, Ronquila made this comment over a year ago. It's a terrible shame that Macek is no longer with us, but you can't tell him to respect the dead when he made that comment at the time when Carl was still alive.

@IRunner Don't forget: 1972-Speed Racer & 1974- Space Battleship Yamato :).

Negative, it is just good too.

I liked this movie better when it was called Megazone 23. Unfortunately for Robotech fans, they won't be able to see the hot sex and ultra violence of Megazone Part 2+ 3.

@TWchronic Try looking on my page? I have the rare dubs (not the ADV ones) of both MEGAZONE 23 Parts 2 and 3 uploaded here.
MegazoneTwoThree 1 year ago
@TWchronic No, this is just a hackneyed combination of Megazone Part 1 and Southern Cross.
It doesn't take place in the Megazone 23 continuity.

Anybody know where I can find Robotech : The Untold Story?
nanerpants 2 years ago
or is this the same thing?

Err, this is Robotech: The Untold Story.
BinaltechGinrai 2 years ago
It isn't available on any DVD release of Harmony Gold's.
AngelicCo 2 years ago
Because Harmony Gold let the license to MEGAZONE 23 run out rather then renew it and they pretend this movie never happened.

The ultimate hack of MEGAZONE 23 and SOUTHERN CROSS
Both available on DVD in the US, uncut and uncensored!

nguyke48 2 years ago
Well the games were based on an 86 episode anime that t released two films The recent shadow chronicles, and this which was screened in texas decades ago but never released. This takes place after the first season (the macross saga) where as the other one took place after the third season (invid invasion)....tony macguire is producing a live action movie.....I'm all acquiver.
Limejello10512 2 years ago
This is pretty cool.
Nah, screw that, REALLYcool! This was never seen outside that Texas theatre. How were you able to get such a high-quality rip of the movie?!

If you've been fallowing up with 1980's pop culture, you would know that there are multiple alien invasion and robot take over of the planet earth to come in the next few decades.
dougd1015 2 years ago
what year was robotech introduced?
josemustang65 2 years ago
1986; it was to tie directly with sequel series Robotech: The Sentinels with the introduction of new characters to the franchise. Due to Tatsunoko Productions (the company Harmony Gold was lesing the footage from) and the distributor Cannon Films's interference many changes happened. Tats didn't want a second Macross film (originally the movie took place during a time the SDF-1 was in deep space) so all Macross footage wasn't available. Cannon wanted more robots and less girls.

Cool. Thanks!

I want to see this anime for what it really is. the story I guess has been robotechnilyzed the real story is left out.
179107199999 2 years ago
Well yeah, it used the first part of the original anime, Megazone 23, which is about a delinquent biker (think Akira) who discovers a top secret government motorcycle, and is chased by the authorities.
wazzonah 2 years ago 2
Macek practically lives up to his name as the anti-christ and further demonized half-decent anime with the ridiculous dubbing and voice acting.
wazzonah 2 years ago 5
And yet Macek was in charge of the Streamline dub release of MEGAZONE 23 Part I, which is a much better dub then the recent one done by ADV.
BinaltechGinrai 2 years ago
Bit harsh aint it?
slyther2 1 year ago
This is ridiculous. That's Dana, Bowie, Anglo, Louie Nickels, and the rest of the 15th squadron. Why not just use them in the movie instead of ripping off old footage from the early episodes of Southern Cross.
I can see why Carl Macek won't include this as canon.
kingkull0423 2 years ago
You can blame Cannon Films for that. they wanted "More guns and robots" and less girls so Macek needed to add in footage from one of the sagas. He couldn't use MACROSS footage and didn't see how MOSPEADA could work, so he went with SOUTHERN CROSS.
Had Cannon not made those demands, the movie would have most likely remained in the timeframe of the first ROBOTECH war during the period of when the SDF-1 was in space.
BinaltechGinrai 2 years ago
Yeah I think MegaZone 23 would have worked better as a prequel to the Macross timeline. Both Meag Zone and Macross seem to take place in the same time period.
Southern Cross' look is far to alien, both films are way to dichotomous to work as a re-edit.
kingkull0423 2 years ago
Yep they do. Because their different anime .
179107199999 2 years ago
Yeah i know but Macross and Megazone's anime style matches a bit more. It's two bad because Megazone could have been a great prequel. The motor bike could have been the first robotechnology prototype that the United earth forces were working on and the fact that they were hiding a planetary invasion from earth would have propelled the storyline. it sucks that they missed the mark because of licensing agreements gone awry.
kingkull0423 2 years ago
The transforming cycle idea was also intended as the predecessor to the cyclones of the Next Generation, so it made sense to be here in 2nd generation.

HangryBunny 2 years ago
This is just trippy. I've never saw Robotech but I have seen Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada and Megazone 23. Seeing it cut together like this knowing that it was the only way to get it released stateside is very fascinating.
Romusk86 2 years ago
Lots of complaints but in reality, Robotech is an amazing piece of work. The way the stories (for the most part) fit in together, including mention of a non-existent Admiral Hunter in 3rd generation, and the almost 100% original score, is a very big accomplishment.

179107199999 2 years ago
Macek says this was the worst dub in his career he was forced to do. But this is the 2nd version. Only parts of the 1st nonMacek version appear to be floating around but was never completed. Macek says he has all of it. It had no Southern Cross footage, nor did The 3rd Fan Club version that was the most accurate dub made which used the 2nd's audio from Megazone 23 and restored the lost scenes with subs. It even fits better into the Robotech timeline and still takes place in space not Earth.

This was taken right out of one of the southern cross episodes.

I'd blame the guys at Cannon for the major problems with this movie as it was them that wanted more action, guns and robots which resulted in the removal of Megazone23 footage and the inclusion of Southern Cross footage.
MegazoneTwoThree 3 years ago 2
@ronquila Respect the dead, you asshole. Delete this post to avoid making a further ass of yourself. Macek was a legend, and he actually intended to do more of a straight dub of this movie until the studios interfered. GTFO and don't come back.
ApolloKun777 1 year ago
@ApolloKun777 In all fairness, Ronquila made this comment over a year ago. It's a terrible shame that Macek is no longer with us, but you can't tell him to respect the dead when he made that comment at the time when Carl was still alive.
