Another great resource is kanji.koohii.com, a free website based on the method in the book you recommended (Heisig's Remembering the Kanji, they kept his order of characters), but with more interesting (and current) stories for all 3000+ Kanji, submitted and voted on by hundreds of users.
The site can be used with Anki, or they have their own SRS that's just as good, and I found it even easier than just using the book (which I used to learn about 500 Kanji before I found the site).
