@haleymary people from Saskatchewan r commonly referred to as stubble jumpers. Which is a ref to grain production. It also applies to a lesser degree to Albertans and Manitobans. Saskans r thought of as very socialist, high taxes (property) and unsophisticated. My experience is that these generalizations r correct but certainly not exclusively so...like all generalizations....generally speaking.
Lol I just recently stumbled upon this common mistake, and it makes me laugh. People seem to commonly switch around "Ohio, Idaho, and Iowa." The first two, obviously, because of syllable and pronunciation similarity. I can let it slide.... but we grow corn, not potatoes. Thus, we are sometimes confused with Iowa. Corn is to Iowa what potatoes are to Idaho. That one I'm a bit more adamant on.
Im from California and just recently moved to Colorado. I can tell u from living in Calif for over 30 years that the stereotype u have of it is about 25 years old lol The new Calif girl is now Latina. U'dbehard pressed to find tan, blond, blue eyed girls on the beach there now. Nay, sadly they all grew up and moved to Masschusetts lol Oh and Calif is actually a hair away from being a red state. But the media would have you believe otherwise.
As far as my stereotype of MA, just watch Jaws lol Thats how I think you all talk which is charming. Oh and I think of how gay marriage was forced on you guys when you actually voted and fought against it. Democracy. Dead Democracy is how I think of Mass.
I have lived in idaho for 8 years and I have never seen a potato farm here in idaho. Idaho actually produces twice as much wheat as potato, but kansas beat us to that.
The thing about stereotypes is that you are always talking extreme generalities. Even the most "liberal" states vote 40% Republican, and even the most "right wing ignorant neocon" states vote 40% Democrat.
Plus, with TV, internet, and people moving around everywhere, we're all somewhat becoming homogenized.
I'm originally from the South, but have lived in Illinois for a while now now. Unfortunately, I believe a Southern accent is perceived as ignorant, crazy Republican, religious hypocrites, saying "yall" a bunch, and even conjures up old facets of racism.
As for Illinois, I think outside of Chicago people envision corn, farming, talking like you're holding your nose (such as pronouncing the letter "A" like "ee"), and somewhat boring.
When I think of Massachusetts, I think of not being able to say R's at the end of words, old money in the Boston suburbs, upstate New England beauty, and somewhat rudeness/aggressiveness.
Massachusetts whateever i think of Pilgrims and thanksgiving and turkey and shit. ha ha.I'm from New York yeah think about gettin yo ass pistol whipped and leaving you without ya sneakers...takin ya wallet all that.
when i think of massachusetts i think of bricks. or the color red. or even stamps. my imagination runs around. i'm from california, and i'd say it has a plethora of stereotypes: surfers, plastic surgery, always sunny, celebrities everywhere, stuck-up rich kids, etc.
John Kerry was the first thing I thought of when I heard Massachusetts. And, then his antiwar stance. As far as stereotypes of Saskatchewan goes, I don't really know of any.
John F. Kennedy is the first thing i think of when i hear Massachusetts. And then i think of his accent.. Stereotypes of my state [Ohio]? I have no idea
Common and ZOOM common and ZOOM common and ZOOMA ZOOMA ZOOMA ZOOM!!!!
That's what goes on in my head everytime I hear the word Massachusettes...
And I'm from Minnesota.
Apparently we're all hicks who are in love with Canada and our siblings.
We all wear overalls and work on farms while carrying pitchforks in order to dissuade those pesky kids who would otherwise want to dwell on our pourches.
I don't know what that zooma thing is. What is that? And I don't think of Minnesota as hicksville. I think suburban families with funny accents, and I think of Minneapolis, mostly, because that's where I've been. So I think spending weeks on end high on something or other and playing fuckin' rock & roll in a dingy practice space.
When I think of Massachusetts, I think of a liberal guy dressed in an argyle sweater with brown pants and some converses. This man is my soulmate, who unfortunately for me is gay. My imagination hates me.
I have brown hair... I'm pale... I'm not filthy stinkin rich... and my boobs are real as far as I know. I look down apon beach dwellers who only have one goal in life: LOOK LIKE BARBIE. Lame.
Wow -- I even read the vid title, and I was still really puzzled when you said potatoes . . . Here in Ohio we just have lots of corn and beans.
But Massachusetts? The FIRST thing I think of is that everyone there is a committed, gay married couple. Then I think they all drink tea and live in charming little nook-towns that used to persecute witches.
I know those are stereotypes, but I'm not even kidding: first things I think of.
well we don't, I don't even like beans, actually it's the rest of the world who gets diarrhea (I know history, our first emperor got it as soon as he got off the boat)
Well, I am from Oregon...tree-hugging, smoking pot, like the rain, embracing womens body hair,lol....laid back nature lovers.....I do them all except Pot...Pot is bigger than me so I cant,lol...~Raven

When I here the word Massacusettes. I think of chopsticks...I dont know why. I live in Texas..I think people think that everyone is a cowboy and cactus everywhere which is half right...[cactus]

I guess the most unfortunate thing about living in Texas is that people assume you support Bush even though tons of you don't.
i've been across the country and i'm still proud to call massachusetts my home. i dunno, it's home. i love watching seasons change and i love all the history here and i love the ghost stories and the witch trials and everything. yeah, i think i belong here. if this were the 60s, i'd want to be in california to experience the summer of love and the psychedelic/folk boom, but nowadays, i'm an east coast kid for life.

I think New England as a whole has a personality. People here tend to be real, down to earth and slightly sarcastic. At least, that's what I tend to think.
