This, for me, is the definitive recording of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. Possibly it is because it is the one I know best, but to my ear no other flows as beautifully as when Kirkby and Bowman sing together. At times their voices are like water as it flows delicately over a waterfall.
My first encounters with ealry music was as a teenager in the mid 80's....Emma Kirkby for me holds fond memorys. Through her voiceI i heard Vivaldi and Dowland for the first time and was hooked!.......i think i have since bought every recording she made, but i hold with great regard her recording made with the direction of Christopher Hogwood and the fabulous Acadamy of Ancient Music!........Kirkby's voice is perfection.
I think, this CD with Christopher Hogwood is the best recording of Satbat mater ever made! I love it and never found better recording of this masterpiece...
@buddybodie Yes! I agree the Emma Kirkby/James Bowman/Acad. Anc Music version has been the awesome standard for years....however I (and many others) think that the recent Vivica Genaux/ Sabina Puertolas/Les Talens Lyriques is simply the best....an AMAZING! perfomance, probably the best ever recorded....(so far)
I have loved Emma Kirby and this performance so long....I grew up with this piece...It was my entry in Baroque Vocal Music........
@bf2019 Thank you for the hint, I didnt know this recording.
I dont have a CD, but after listening the live performance here on youtube I must say, sorry, I disagree. My personal meaning:
Part 1 is too slow for me. And in the next parts both singers sing this piece with too much "pressure", it is too much "opera singing", too much vibrato, too much presenting of "myself" and too few humility.
Recording with Hogwood/Bowman/Kirkby is still my favorite, it has all what this piece needs, sorry...
@buddybodie Another version you might like is this Strong, Stark, and Deeply Solemn version, almost Gregorian....: Pergolesi - Stabat Mater in F Minor - Mov. 1-3/12 HARMONICO101 : Sara Mingardo, contralto/Gemma Bertagnolli, soprano/Concerto Italiano.....these my favorites so far: Emma, Vivica, and Sara....thanks and Peace to You...
Wow. I've come across various versions of this, but from the moment I heard the first tonal interval start to fold out here, I just heard an electric "Oh yesss!" inside me.
That almost gothic line to the voices, balanced by a vibrato that's not a fixed mechanical quality of voice, but a natural expression, like a bird is the natural expression of the sky.
God bless these musicians, they've made something of real beauty.
Selon moi, la meilleure version entre toutes sans discutions possible. De très grands interprètes. Je peux vous dire, pour l'avoir côtoyer un peu, que James Bowman est un grand monsieur et ce dans tous les sens du terme. ce qui ne gâte rien.
WHAT AN UNBELIEVABLE THIEF YOU ARE LUIS PEREZ!!!!!
YOU STOLE THIS VIDEO FROM KIYA3 ACCOUNT!!!! YOU ARE A SHAMELESS SCUM. She closed her account but you lazy thief lacking creativity and talent just pretend it is yours. I will inform Emma Kirkby herself , the recording company and the You Tube as well. THIEF! !!!
Relax man, most people just want to listen to the music. The video is not exacly a compilation masterpiece, you don't need that much creativity or talent. Not that luis perez should pretend it is his own.
Emma Kirkby and the instrumental ensemble are great as everytime. Also James Bowman does his part very well, though I maybe would prefer a singer like Deborah York as partner of E. Kirkby
It's great to hear baroque music sung right. I spent ages going through recordings where the singers (most often the soprano) had way to much vibrato. This is much better! I love such clean and smooth singing.
I think, that this is the most beautiful version of Stabat Mater by Pergolesi; Miss Kirkby and Mister Bowman, have the style to sing this music; in this show, thier performance is really great; by the way, this version is absolutly respectful of original partiture, for that reason I love it.
The most beautiful ballet I ever saw (many times!) is called Bella Figura, choreographed by Jiri Kylian for the Nederlands Dans Theater (and also danced by The Australian National Ballet). It is set to this music which is performed live on stage while the dancers are on. Spinechilling.
They sound great together. Sculpture at the beginning is beautiful, but I don't like the rest of this video. It would be better to show more art connected to the title. Thank you for posting this video - I didn't hear this version before, and I love it!
Ah Kirkby and James Bowman! A great combo. Bowman is a true counter-tenor. Hear how smooth his registers are and how the voice has continuum throughout and doesn't sound like a different person singing when he is in chest, mixed and head registers. Hats off and thumbs up! This is classic!
Staring Mother, from below Sees her King, and Our Fellow Soul can't reach Lest we teach All that Pilgrims know Depth of heart Sorrows tell Let my Lord Only know How in all We praise Thy part - Pergolesi
E' quasi inquietante come lo Stabat Mater di Pergolesi riecheggi nel Requiem di Mozart, scritto quassi 60 anni più tardi e, anche quello, in punto di morte...

At the Cross her station keeping,
stood the mournful Mother weeping,
close to Jesus to the last.
Christ above in torment hangs,
she beneath beholds the pangs
of her dying glorious Son.
Is there one who would not weep,
whelmed in miseries so deep,
Christ's dear Mother to behold?
Some of the most powerful words ever written, set to music by one of the greatest, and sung by THE greatest!
