Back then TRUE hip hop was struggling just to get any airplay at all, and outside of the inner city, these groups had NO CHANCE to get their message through, and were constantly sold out & message diluted. Therefore pop acts like Hammer (who is really a good guy I agree) upset the hardcore hip hop community. As did Will Smith (nobody brings this up anymore) who won the first hip hop Grammy. Beastie Boys redeemed themselves.
