I just watched this film. Moved me to tears. I loved how the actress playing Jonathan's mother played her part. We often forget that we are not the sole victims, but our parents have to carry society's prejudices along with us. It's easy to be selfish. She went through so much, and yet persevered because of her love for her son. Amazing. Such a good film, such a marvelous work of art.
Holy shit. When I watched the movie, I never realized it was Jonathon having a daydream when he was singing... That's fucking epic o.o.. No wonder I was surprised at the end D:. I don't pay attention :D.
i am directing a production of Midsummer now at the school n i have adorable boys some of whom i think r gay or going to discover they are later. i knew i was at their age. i love the part of Puck i cast a tall lean boy who is adorable at playing the part. i am basing the costume on this version with the makeup.
He was all aprehensive and didn't really want people knowing he was gay. And by the second "lou lou lou" he was like screw it this is who I am.
I can't believe he was picked on, he dresses so cool. Obviously the trend setter in that school. And that wimpy Rugby team...I've seen Rugby players the size of three of those guys combined. And what kind of school doesn't investigate a hate crime on the locker door? I know its a movie.
Omg i loved this movie...if only they were able to cast better dancers and costumes...but other then that the plot is funny and singing is amazing for not having so much training=]
@sailorpfat right.. thats it. But it doesn't really matter, that the description says anything different. because this video is about the music, not about the movie at all ^^
What I really like about this scene is when it goes into Fantasy mode, the fantasy is Jonathan's and NOT Timothy's. They are alluding to the love that Jonathan already has for Timothy... AMAZING!
Oh, and to explain a grammatical tick: "Be as thou art wont to be" is an archaic reference. In this phrase, "wont" (pronounced "want") indicates and old meaning--"to be accustomed to." When sung in this retelling (or in the original) it means, "Return to the mind you had before Puck put a spell on you. Go back to the way you were, but remember this!"
The beauty of all of this is that Jonathan is willing to sacrifice his love for Timothy--that one shining thing that has made his life whole--to restore free will and the ability of choice to those he had afflicted. It is the moment that he earned his happiness, and it is then that the film comes together and delivers (amazingly) on the promise of the play: love is found, not forced.
Beautiful scene, all in all; and I see no reason to assume it is in anyone's imagination, except all of ours.
This scene is the initial laying of the spell that imbues Jonathan with the powers of the flower. The drama teacher is, to me, Oberon and Titania,Hypolyta and the fairies--all rolled into one convenient character. This scene is offset later when the spell is broken during a dream sequence where many of those ensorcelled are present to repeat the refrain: Be as thou art won't to be.
In that scene a number of the characters are shown to awaken, a premonition of Jonathan that he must end it.
Ok, to help those who want to see the whole thing online, Netflix has it as a view now option. Wonderful site, that.
Onto the other issue: Is this scene in Jonathan's or Timothy's imagination? My answer: Neither. You have to remember, this is a retelling of Midsummer, and not just a story about a retelling. This movie is a play within a play, much like "Lilies" (another magnificent film).
As such, I don't believe that this is in anyone's imagination.
Most of the fantasy sequences/musical numbers are Timothy's imagination. This one however looks like it could be Jonathan's, but it.s hard to say. Open to interpretation I guess.
I also see it as Jonathon's. I don't think Timothy was singing directly to the door (as it showed) or that someone who "didn't know it" would just up and drop the papers. Also, Jonathon was the one reaching up, which is a classic dream sequence motion as being helped into one's role. It just fits more smoothly than if it were Timothy's, I believe.
I also think it's Johnathon's, at least that's what I get out of it. I'm on the same page as dustin.
Though I must ask: Isn't the song "Be as thou wast want" not won't? "Want to be" makes a LOT more sense than "Won't to be" I mean, Wont to be makes no sense grammatically at all.
@Myzou77 I know the comment is a year old but I can't resist. It's from a Shakespearean play. But I loved this movie. Reminds me of my time in high school.
@Myzou77 to be "wont" to something means that you /don't/ want to be that way. To "be as thou was wont to be" is to embrace something you would normally reject.
what makes you say that? makes more sense to me that all the imagination scenes are timothy's [same premise as roxy's dream-world-view in chicago] ---- timothy knows the jocks are waiting out front, he imagines himself on stage singing directly to jonathan and bringing him into his true self [ie, gay, as he "was wont to be"] - then he takes him by the hand and physically leads him towards the play / teacher / ensuing magic
I can see that. It just always occurred to me that it was Jonathan's, because I don't think Timothy knows he's peering through the crack, and before the dream sequence starts you see Jonathan's eye, making me think that we've entered his thoughts. Plus, I pictured him wanting to come into himself as he heard Timothy singing... so I took it as his longing.
possibly -- i'm more inclined to credit the fantasy to timothy, since the vast majority of the movie is about his fantasies -- but do agree, definite evidence to support idea this one is jonathan's ----- oh well, fun song not matter what
@shimmian i dont know if u ever changed ur mind but i believe it was supposed to make u think that until the end when it turned out that jonathan turns out to be gay
I love this scene! Tanner's voice is a revelation; he's very talented.
This is the best independent gay film that I have seen since "Shelter," another very good gay movie.
I discovered that there are two DVD covers for the film out there. You can find the DVD with Tanner Cohen and Nathaniel David Becker on it at TLA Video on-line. TLA, also, has the soundtrack. I guess that the cover with the two boys was considered too gay for some people.
Just caught this movie on Logo earlier and I fell in love with the music almost instantly. I had to get the soundtrack afterwords, as well. Beautiful stuff :)
well...i had an experience before like how Jonathan looks at Timothy everytime two of them alone.hahaahaa...seems like Jonathan wants to be friends with Timothy but his career stops him from doing it.
and by the way, tanner looks really really good when the light start glowing on him
I love this movie, & have to see it every day! I do wish the mom was in it LESS, & Timothy & Jonathon loving eachother MORE! lol

Yet another amazing song from a spectacular movie. Thanks for posting, dude <3
Do you know where I can watch the whole version of this song? It starts getting good when the teacher walks out from behind the tree and I feel like I'm missing out :(
I know!! I always feel like I'm missing out as well, but every single time I tried to crop out the whole thing, it always cut it short...
As far as I know, I'm the only one with actual video clips, so I have no clue where you can find one with the additional 15 seconds... except for the movie
Aw, well I watched the movie, so I feel better now lol. Long story short, best movie I've ever seen. Maybe it's just because I'm a random gay kid that loved tanner cohen, but I liked the way the movie flowed, and the music was freaking amazing. I love were the world mine and this song a lot.
pshhhh i didnt even know who tanner cohen was before i saw this movie and i still absolutely loved it =] just seems like being gay can have so many perks, hooray haha
and yeah the music was....a.m.a.z.i.n.g! =]
only wish they would have shown more scenes with timothy and johnathan instead of doing of bunch with his mom lol
*chills* I love this part of the movie. This song and the title track are my favorites. Mind you I could've done without the crazy lady vocalizing xD Still loved it.
This should have been everyones first clue that the jock was secretly gay. He had this fantasy of Timothy BEFORE the love-pansy allowed him to come out.
...a CLUE? Sort of the way the arrival of giant spaceships in Independence Day is a "clue" that aliens are invading? Are there actually people who see this movie and are too stupid to figure out he's a closet case until the end?
The first real 'clue' is that there was no way this movie wasn't going to have a happy ending. The second one was Jonathan's behavior after Timothy gets whacked with the dodgeball.
I had included that part in the clip, but when I uploaded the vid to YouTube for some reason it was cut short... sad, b/c I really like when he said that
did anyone notice that in this scene they say "be as thou wast wont" and in "all things shall be peace" they say "Be as thou wast want" or am i hearing things?
i sooo love this film thanks for uploading this section of the film its great 5 stars !! just one thing elfendustin could you try and find an mp3 download link for this song ? thanks again!!

It does have a happy ending. Timothy ends up with the boy he likes. He secretly liked Timmothy all along.
