This was an interesting review. I remember this book from when I was a kid. Personally I loved the antagonist and imagery of the book. As you said there's this feeling of ancientness to the other world and mother, and the fact that it's not explained, I feel actually benefits the story. It felt more like we were in Coraline's shoes, and we there's the feeling of fearing it, and not understanding it. I feel that the lack of information made the ordeal feel more real and threatening.
Love it. I should tell you that Coraline is one of my all time favorite movies so I was quite excited to see what you had to say, you didn't disappoint. :)
Anyway, I'm in agreement with you about the film being better (I have read the book, very good read) and I saw it as a double feature with the Friday the 13th remake. No, no, it wasn't an actual double feature it was i.e. me simply walk into another screening.
And this story arc you have in mind, very well done and I await more.
Having to read "Mockingbird" for school, it made me think (seeing as how this is the other book that I'm reading), will you do Tom Sawyer anytime soon?
I've read Good Omens, and a bit of The Sandman, but nothing that is wholly Neil Gaiman's work. (Well, Sandman counts for the writing part, but since Sandman is a comic and relies just as much on artwork to tell the story, I'm not counting it here.)
I've been meaning to read/ watch this one as well, and I'm definitely intrigued. Nice work, on this one I kind of like the movie clips in there but then again I'm used to having them in from watching reviews on Blistered Thumbs and TGWTG so it may just be personal preference.
BTW tell cassie she's rather good at doing creepy voices. The first time she spoke I didn't recognize it but by the second time I knew it was your sister(add more audio effects if you really want it to be a mystery).
Welcome back from VidCon! (I was busy managing NotCon while you guys were playing!)
Yeah, I felt like book Coraline started off as being too detached. So, it was a slow start and it took me a bit to get into the book (despite it being a short read).
The mysterious voice is Cassie :P But I'm intrigued to see where this goes. Also I thought it was just as good without the clips, but that's because I've seen the movie. I would keep the clips for lesser known movies.
I notice you don't use clips from the movies anymore. Do you not have a capture device, do you feel you don't have to, or are you getting notified not to?
If the last, the free speech act entitles you to use clips if it's for comparison, to prove a point, parody, or review.
...creepy new voice to go with creepy Book/Movie o..o parallelism... either way I'm creeped out and slightly curious. *carefully shuffles back to cubby hole*
Just for your information Henry Selick also directed the Nightmare Before Christmas, that is why it looked similar to that film, but Tim Burton wrote the Nightmare Before Christmas.
Oh, and by the by, Tim Burton didn't direct this film. It was Henry Sellick (correct me if I have the wrong spelling), the same man who directed The Nightmare Before Christmas.
I'm the first to review this! That really made my day for some reason! Hahahahaha I'm a really big fan of your reviews, so yeah. Great review once again guys! I been wanting to read this for a long time but I couldn't find it in the library. I may just have to buy it myself. Oh well. :)
Finally, a review where I have both read the book, and seen the movie. :) Very well thought out, I'm a huge fan of Neil Gaiman. You rock!

And I hope the experiment is over soon; I like how you use video clips to enhance the review.

Ugh.. I can't stand Dakota Fanning. For me the book wins because of that annoying overrated child star. Sorry, I'm just picky :P

Overall, an excellent review, Matt! :D So glad you finally got some Gaiman into your reading and viewing schedule!
