The earpiece has to do with the size of the arena and the fact that her voice is being broadcast through the speakers... The reverb and the echo that happens would make her hear herself and the music at different times.

The reason she lost is because of the "Ace Syndrome". Ace sang his best song "Father Figure" early and the same with Katherine, whereas Taylor was consistant throughout AI.
