  • American educational institutions support athletics not academia, otherwise, we'd be sending students abroad, having pep rallies for academic team competitions, charging admission for academic meets, math counts, and chess matches. We glorify athletes and entertainers, some people can have a better quality of life at home while "drawing a check" than working (food, housing, health insurance), and then we wonder why students don't want to get an education! For many, what's the incentive?

  • Proud to be a part of the 1% of university students studying abroad, having spent last fall in Accra, Ghana and the spring in Tel Aviv, Israel. I am now studying in Madrid, Spain with plans to go to Buenos Aires, Argentina for next semester. The cross-cultural communication of which Secretary Clinton speaks is absolutely critical to building global understanding and peace. I hope more young people seize this opportunity! Thanks to NYU for providing me with a global network in which to learn.

  • @erinschrode As one who studies abroad for over 22 years, I say i'ts overrated, but then I was not confined to the Halls of Academia, I was out with actual people, someing that is missing from education in general these days.

  • @ACRScout57 not necessarily... Schools such as Northeastern University, do an excellent job of providing students with the opportunity to interact with the culture, particularly through the co-op program. Also, studying abroad isn't overrated. It's an experience that differs from person to person, and just like most things, it is what you make of it.
