Thanks for posting this! Great story about the water mocassins! That would indeed be kinda freaky knowing that you are camped so close to all those critters. Hammocking would seem an especially good idea in your neck of the woods. I'm sure you have some pretty scenery there!
I like hammock camping too. This is a cool video. It's cool that you are sharing this with your children. All parents should be this devoted to raising their children. Nice Job.

PS: I'm surprised you didnt' move the camp that night. I would have been tempted to.
some of these comments are horrible. these are cowards hiding behind a computer. there is nothing wrong with your voice. your video was fun. you seem like a good guy and you are nice to your daughter.
I want a Hammock cause there are too many spiders, snakes, bears, coyotes, wolves, and mountain lions down here in GA. I plan to set up my hammock though High up in the trees rather than near the ground, so the animals dont see me as a hanging entree.
@ShadowLillium As a hammock camper myself there is one rule, never hang your hammocks higher than you are willing to fall. seriously buddy just be careful although the suspension systems are really safe it happens. You will be hanging up in the hammock resting nicely and all of a sudden "thump" you hit the ground. Surprised at first then you start laughing your butt off.
So I just wanted to mention that hate to see anybody get hurt, especially falling while you are sleeping .

@rutgerzat I bet if you could give a little audio of your voice...he could tell the world how much he hates your voice too. That way it could be equal oppurtunity in the hate department.
This video first introduced me to the idea of hammock camping...and a few months later I can say I love it. Thanks for the idea, I will never go back to tents again. I personally have an ENO hammock, If anyone is interested I should have a review up within the next few days. Thanks again for the vid, kev.
You are lucky to have surroundings which look like this. The most i have here as far as wilderness etc goes is a persons over grown 5 foot by 5 foot garden round the corner. Scenes like this are just things i watch on here and the tv. To you its a woods or forest or what ever lol to me its amazing lol
I remember my first time seeing a rattlesnake when I was 6 with my dad on his property and was so scared I could not move. Then later on we were camping and saw a nest of some other type of snake and saw babies. Number one thing I fear most out of the venomous/poisonous world are tiny scorpions because you can die from them. They are also very prevalent in Nevada. I can remember going out barefoot into the garage to fix a breaker and almost stepping on one. Things that make you go berrrrrr.
I must just be old, to me a small lightwieght pack tent is perfect. You dont rely on trees, wood, cover etc and its completly enclosed from bugs and varmits. Critter free shelter in any enviroment.
ok im not trying to be mean but cant snakes climb trees and cant spiders to and tickes which also jump so i still like the hammock thing but they also have tents that be hung like hammocks and they mite be better for that
Many mistake the diamond back water snake for a water moccasin. The DBWS looks scary will strike at you but are not poisionous and they collect in areas where frogs frequent the area. You can tell the difference by looking at the pattern on the snake it looks like a diamond back pattern like on a rattle snake but they lack a rattle they are dark colored the reason they are mistaken for the moccasin. Either way I don't want them sharing my bed. You can hammock camp in swamp over water too.
No promises, but I find a cheap shaker of chili pepper can make a nice little anti-critter perimeter. Remember, if it stings your nose, it's probably painful to an animal. Keeps them out of my garden so far.
Ive always used a hammock cus Im to lazy to carry and setup a tent, ecspeccially when Im only camping for one night.
Then again where I live in coastal NC, theres no real predators other than snakes and bugs....if you know where your camping at. So all I do is cut on the bug repellor and wrap up comfty like:)
OMG! I just read all these comments! Boy we have it good here in Australia! A big male red kangaroo can ruin your day, but not eat you! I think I have seen 3 or 4 brown snakes in over 30 years of camping and hunting! It is way dryer here though, with not much game for snakes to eat.
We normally just use a ground sheet and sleeping bag. Only use a tent to keep wind off.
One morning my mate lifted his ground sheet up and there were about 20 scorpions that had cuddled up underneath him for warmth!
Not really. We get huge orb weaver spiders, but they just spin huge webs in trees. There are snakes, but thats why I like to go away in winter when they are all denned up. Like I said, I have seen maybe 3 or 4 brown snakes over the years, they are pretty shy. Inland Australia is pretty dry, most of the critters have to cover a lot of ground to eat.
good to know, i would love to go to australia, i used to want to come to shoot thousands of rabbits, but i believe you guys' gun laws would now prevent me from doing that
Anyone who would even consider "camping" whether in a hammock or a tent anywhere near alligators and water moccasins needs their head examined...that's just plain nuts! Plus, hammocks are tied to trees?? ticks and chiggers will get all over u..& what about stepping out of that thing when ya gotta go pee in the middle of the night?? man, I would not sleep a wink! forget it...go hunt, go fish, but "camp" back at the motel, lol there u can pick the ticks off ya! hahaha
The aggressiveness of these snakes has been greatly exaggerated. In tests designed to measure the various behavioral responses by wild specimens to encounters with people, 23 of 45 (51%) tried to escape while 28 of 36 (78%) resorted to threat displays and other defensive tactics. Only when they were picked up with a mechanical hand were they likely to bite.
For big guys, I'd recommend the Super Hammock by Rothco. I think Dave Canterberry with Wilderness Outfitters recently did a YouTube video on it. You can look on Amazon and just type in Super Hammock, and you'll find the Rotcho hammock. IT's a net mesh, so not necessarily the absolute most comfortable, but plenty good enough to achieve its purpose for larger men over 300lbs. This hammock will hold up to a ton of weight. It wraps up tiny and weighs very little. I hope that helps.
hammocks have come along way. they now sell hammocks that are completely enclosed, like one man tents that hang from trees. they also have mosquito nets and everything to keep you covered and protected. its all a matter of how much use you'll get out of it and how much you want to spend.
very cogent points, I agree with everything you said. especially the comment about ticks. in california where I do alot of camping, they're a big problem, especially if you pitch your tent in that seemingly nice thicket of flat brush. what you don't know is that a deer bedded down there the previous night, shedding ticks which have now attached themselves to all the twigs and stuff. keeping the spiders, bugs, and snakes away are all extra benefits.
if a snake really wanted to get at you, but it wouldnt, i dont think a hammock would slow it down much. This may come as a shocker but they can climb trees. i guess were all screwed. I dont care for hammocks because if a super-predator comes along, ie Bear, cougar, creepy hillbilly, you are a nicely wraped snack sized burrito ripe for the picking.
I know a lot of people bring up the apex predator point against hammocks. I'm just wondering what the reasoning is behind this.
Everything I've been told by guides is that if a bear or cougar wants to see whats what, tent walls won't stop them, and that the best solution is just be smart and keep your pack, food, and non-essentials a good distance from camp.
Actually they have you traped inside so they have dinner in a roll basicly because a tent wont do much to a big animal.. if they want you they will in a hammock at least you can get up and fight it off with out being traped inside a tent.. I use a tent though..
Its the feeling like there is walls between you and the out side.. had a drunk person jump on my tent wasnt fun getting out of it and kicking some but for ruining my 300 dollar tent.. I kicked some ass that night ah that was fun.. went went swiming during spring at 2 am ...
you do not keep food ,pack, essentials a "good distance away" from you unless you are talking about up in a tree the hammock you the pack and the food is up a tree at less two ft above the ground higher if possible the tree is the best place you and your gear here in Florida
if a gator wants you he will have to reach up at you most times he will not reach unless the smell of dead animal is all over the hammock in which case pay your life insurance
Sorry, I live in Alberta and do most of my camping in the Rocky Mtns. I have no experience with alligators.
In my environment, non-essentials and food, anything that has a smell that could attract animals (bears mostly) is kept in steel bins if they're provided or is hung from a tree 100m+ from where you are sleeping.
if you i have decent quality tent with no holes in it then you shouldnt have a problem with snakes spiders and such. my only problem with hamock camping is misquitos can bite you in the bum while you sleep threw the bottom of the hamock and you loose to much body heat.
That river water was dark murky brown during the day and pitch black at night!
We could see the moccasins skimming across the water in the moon light! I really hate snakes now that I'm older, guess I was to stupid when I was younger.
I remember we would dare our youngest friend to eat live minows! Sometimes while camping on that sandbank, the mosquitoes were so bad we had to put some green vegetation in the fire to smoke the bugs out. Man, those were the days! Fearless crazy kids. No tent, just sleeping bags in the sand. Catch a fish and cook it on a stick and eat it! Yeah, we were roughing it! Always had a floating ice chest with some Busch beer and some cheap Lord Calvert.
Shoot, we used to go tubing down a south Georgia river in the middle of the night with mocasins hanging off the low limbs of the river bank trees..they would slide in the water when they saw us coming by...we paddled like hell to get away from them! Then we would pitch a camp on some sand bank. Probably lucky we didn't get eaten by alligators. Stupid kids we were!
i just bought a light weight hammock that is not made out of rope but a tent-like material. a very good hammock. bugs can be a big problem when sleeping in a hammock so bring a masquito net. as well.
