I got a D5000 for 600.00, photoshop cs5 for 200.00 and and now have 200.00 left for a tripod and backpack carry case. For me the D5000 was a great deal, I would like to get a 55 to 200 lens and the 18 55 is good but sometimes I would like to get a little closer. Scot's advice is pretty good though, I have played with elements and it is pretty good
First off, you alol should have just called this a commercial for Nikon, Canon & Adobe. Scott could just as easily have recommended the Sony Alpha series cameras, Pentax or Olympus brands. An even more affordable option for photo manipulation for a beginner would be Microsoft's Digital Image Pro 9.0 or 10.0. One would still have around $300.00 left for a tripod, flash and reflectors and memory cards (which were not mentioned). Also DVD instructional videos to help get them on the way.
i would not call it commercial because it would be much smarter to buy Nikon or canon because they are both better then any other digital SLR and have better quality of camera for extra 100$ .
i got nikon d60 (couple months ago ) and it just great, great lenses, accessories , and now i don't need to change all my camera gear to nikon (if i would bought other brand) .
Get a decent body and go for an amazing lens, Lenses never get old. Fuck the tripod and fuck the software

How about a lens? Isn't that needed, along with the camera, to take pictures? lol

@spicymchaggis666
You do get a standard lens with an entry level DSLR. :) Only when you buy a pro body you don't get a glass.
But yeah he should have mention to get a good lens

So, do Sony, Pentax, and Olympus offer the same amount of lenses that Canon and Nikon do?

canon and nikon is money saver

It makes more sense. It's easier to find support an dgear for Canon and Nikon.
Plus, most pros use those. If you're starting out, why not go into a system that you will grow into?

You can spend $600 or even $800 and any DSLR will come with an "ok" starter lens

Scott, on a different note...great of you how you're still keeping your weight down after you lost so many pounds many months ago.
