im sorry, but you play lovely, you can explain things well, its good that you love what you do, but theres just one thing ..... you should make some sort of finger charts for us players that are really not the best players yet :)
@mRjAcKmAn95 I'm glad you like the teaching. Yet, do you really think that 50% of whistle players are heathens/pagans? It seems like a stretch to me. My teachers all went to Mass and I have found, over the years, a deep connection between music and spirituality. Indeed, that is what prompts me to make these videos.
Although I share your heathen views, I must agree with Ryan Duns. If we Iook at the number of christians in Ireland while keeping in mind we call the tin whistle an Irish whistle too, you can see a connection :P
Not every christian talking about God is trying to convert you, he is only trying to share his views on religion and music, and how these are entwined for him.
Lets not get into a religion discussion on a music video please, it's bad enough it happens on folk metal videos.
@Qynox Apologies for my rudeness. You are right. It was not my place to bash on god or ryan for preaching. And the arguments on folk vids are horrid i know..
Aside from this discussion, may I advise you listen to Cruachan and especially Bright Eyes by Furor Gallico. Two pagan bands that use the tin whistle in a way which should impress any whistle player, I believe ;).
Ok, first and foremost, do you realy think that "dude" is an appropriate title by which to address Mr. Duns? He is clearly a very accomplished and expert musician who has very generously offered these videos to benefit any who wish to progress in Irish whistle playing, and for this we should be very thankful. Mr. Duns may perhaps be embarrissed if one was to suggest, in this context, the title "Meistro", but realy, this title would be much closer than "dude", which seems rather disrespectful.
Second, As one who is Christian myself I can understand, and I hope that you might also, that it is the spirit of God within this man that leads him to use his gift as he does. He clearly loves his music, and it is his generosity that drives him to sharing his gift so freely & in such a way that anyone who wishes might be able to benefit from his expertise. Why do you think it is wrong for him to also share with us the very faith that lets this all happen? Please be thankful for his generosity.
Last, did you closely listen to the preaching? Mr Duns was using the teaching to parallel some lessons that are very importent to both faith and music. The lesson of appreciating the diversity of music, faith and indeed everything, and the proper place for the gifts that we are given. Please don't be critical, but remember that these videos were an offering for your benefit, at no cost to you, to help you to advance in your music. And for this, be very thankful.
Hi Father Duns, I'm homeschooling my girls and using your series to teach them the tin whistle. Week one - Mary Had A Little Lamb, easy enough. Week two - beautiful song, and thoughtfully someone put the notes on the site so I could write them down to use. Week three - I'm having a hard time. I love your talk, but I need either the notes written down or for you to do it slower. I really appreciate you putting this on video for musically challenged people as myself. May God bless you.
Hi there, i realize im a little late with this post, but i think you found this video on accident like me. This is a video for intermediate players, the video you were looking for was week 3 not lesson 3!
@gunthervatero i feel sad for you...if you face god youll have no need to disgrace yourself speaking that way to gods anointed..he is real and alive...name him what you will..jesus allah jah jahova yehway it matters not..children of abraham are siblings under him..when me and this good father are dancing eternal in light, you may have to face a sea of empty cold...locked in your own bitter thoughts..let love in your heart again gunther. face him and beg to be forgiven..feel"the light of truth"
@gunthervatero keep your thoughts to yourself. I suggest you do not be so disrespectful to people's way of life and believes. Someone with such a foul mouth should certainly not be telling other people how to sort their lives out! start with yourself and then when you are perfect I am sure there will be lines of people wanting to hear your opinion
This is the first video I feel we get to see what the whistle can really offer us. Those triplets are so exciting and definately will encourage me and others to rework learnt tunes. This is definately my favourite lesson.
I love all of these videos. While I am not Catholic I still especcialy enjoy how here you touch on enjoying gods gifts as a result of honoring him, not as a result of simply exploiting the gift itself. And your comparisons to spirituality and music. In fact these similarities can be found in ALL walks of life. For example..take "competitive sports" like you say, people make one focus the center..victory. Instead of letting "victory" RESULT from self improvement. Its not a motive, just a result.
Sorry, what I meant by "prompt" them was without actually working them out prior to playing it through. I reccomend listening to Finbarr Dwyer for this kind of treatment to a tune. He's a legend!
Very informative Ryan. I have a question though. When you play a tune through, do you find little variations seem to spurt out of you without having to prempt them

can you proove that there is no god?
i may do not believe in most of that what the church says, but i believe in god.
i dont know what he is, or what he does, but somebody is always there

Once again, i appreciate the unapologetic love for Jesus combined with unapologetic love for music. Keep it up!

Some good sound advice for us Ryan. You also get the message across in plain English which is easy to follow.
Thanks for sharing with us.
