I really wish I knew the precise meaning behind this song, because it's absolutely haunting. From what I gather, the narrator is telling a story about how he/she ventured into a Spanish colony, and was quickly arrested by soldiers. Then, he/she was sent to work in a mine as punishment, but apparently escaped, only to be recaptured and hanged to death. Is there any historical context beyond that? Any idea why the narrator was arrested in the first place?
