this is presently my fav song!!!!! all that new computer crap music they have on the ratio is just terrible! they should be saying "remember this song when it was popular in the 60's well here it is"
KINTRELL33: I've tried to tell you a few months ago that this song is NOT from 1973. It's from 1962. It was NOT redone in 1973 and wikepedia does NOT say it was. I happen to be an expert on this band. In fact, I will bet there are few people in the world that know more about these guys than me. I'm not kidding! Please stop telling people this is a re-made version because it isn't. This is the original. It's 1962. THERE WAS NO RE-MAKE!!!!! What is wrong with you?
my album says 1973 and i know what i read, so i am sticking to what i read and what i saw on my album so i will not stop telling people what i know. and i'm not kidding. and there was a remake, so what is wrong with you.
Great tune! When I was a kid I had a babysitter who had a maroon MG. I used to sit in it and think of this tune, and how cool I was going to be when I grew up.
Beeeeautiful! T H I S is the version I knew back when, really liked back then, and truly enjoy still now. Thanks K33! Is there a remastered recording of this version anywhere that you know of? Thx again...
In 1973, Dunn and Stax session guitarist Bobby Manuel recruited B-3 organ phenom Carson Whitsett to be part of a band that was to back up a promising new Stax artist named Stefan Anderson. Their drummer was not working out, so they brought in Al Jackson. The project, however,
did not ultimately yield any results, but the rehearsals were promising, prompting Jackson and Dunn to reform The M.G.'s. This version of the band featured Whitsett in the place of Booker T, so was billed "The MG's" rather than "Booker T. & The M.G.'s".
The 1973 album entitled The MG's, with Manuel and Whitsett replacing Cropper and Jones, was not commercially successful, though it was critically well received. Carson Whitsett would go on to back up Bobby "Blue" Bland, Little Milton, and Kathy Mattea
and have his songs recorded by the likes of Johnnie Taylor, Solomon Burke, B. B. King, Etta James, Conway Twitty, and Lorrie Morgan. Bobby Manuel would become a staple of the Memphis music scene and later founded HighStacks Records in a tribute to Stax and Hi Records.
I absolutely LOVE this song and it cost me a $200.00 set of speakers back in 89 when I turnd my pioneer stereo all the way up!! It sounded like there was a band in my den,My son thought I had lost my mind Because I was ALWAYS teling HIM turn down the music!. He thought it was a blast till the second playing blew the Speakers.Oh well would do it all over again!!!!! And yes this is the correct tempo.
Thank you, Kintrell for posting this song with a slower tempo than the other postings of this song. I play bass along with songs on this website to practice, and playing green onions speeded up was killing my hand. Also, the slower tempo of this song helps me with recognizing if I am staying on beat accurately. Thanks again!
It will still get a copyright pull - even if it's a 50's 78rpm, KINTRELL 33. This is the fifth time Iv'e favourited this original recording. Good luck,my friend. Many many thanks for posting this.
This is the original recording from 1961 published in 1962, possibly re-pressed / or re-released 1973.
So glad to see the original version posted, but where did the 1973 date come from? It was originally released in 1962 and was a top ten hit that year. It was a great song to do an early 60s dance called the Stroll to.
The only other 1962 issue available on you tube has been speed- increased (if you read the info) to avoid copyright pull - this is the correct speed !
"This is the right version, slow"? Yes, this is the original 1962 single, but there is a big difference between studio recording and playing live. The MGs speed it up live for a reason!
Yes. Time is tight. What a major cool song this is. Groovin' on down sorta like my dancin' feet used to do so many years ago. Yeah, time is tight.
Thanks KINTRELL33
