Good question about commercialism, but from how I see it, he kind of straddled it fairly early on with good, straight-ahead swing, and then during the 1950's he had a fine big band that had stylings similar (but not copying) to Basie. I think Neal Hefti even did some arranging for him (Hefti was arranging for Basie at the time).

I saw him play this in the old Paramout theatre in NYC. I am glad I lived through that age of music
