Love the comments and the song. Trapswonder, you're right about the beat; and as influential Danny was for me, I've seen him lose a groove in concert before. Steve89z, I was in HS from 68-72 also, and we played Chicago and BST in the jazz band. At the risk of sounding like an old fogey, they don't make music like this anymore. But I think they will again - there's nothing new under the sun.
the cool thing is these young kids and also myself didn't even realize much of the chicago sound was jazz.they were being turned on to jazz and didn't even realize it.i was in high school 1968-1972 and chicago was my fav band.
who knows, the guys name , he was either in Chicago, or Blood Sweat And Tears. Trumpet player, that went on and played christian music for a while...????
Wow! This is such a great video. As much as I love the soft rock style they had in the mid 80's to 90's, I surely prefer this sound...This is one of those gems you never hear anymore. I've seen Chicago in concert 4 times, and never heard this...Always nice to hear something that's not a big hit, but is just as rockin as anything else they do. Very nice!
this is the best song sung by Terry Kath. this is his first song that I heard Robert Lamm singing the mid range harmonies above terry. It is cool seeing Robert and Terry both with bbeards at the same time.
At 3:28 something weird happens to the beat. Danny played two snare hits on the beat once the sax solo started, then he changed it up by hitting the snare one eigth note shifted after the beat. That threw off Peter's bass line I think. Danny should have come right back to bangin the snare on the 3. Listen to it and you can tell something is not right. It doesn't come back together until Danny start driving on each downbeat toward the end.
Wooohhhh! Little faster than studio versio & very hot. Danny is great not only the flashy stuff but a drumline using only grace notes during the melody is truly out there even for now. This is Chicago w/ Terry, Peter & Danny! ( Peter w/ glasses?)
WOW!!! I couldn't be there, but seeing it is the next best thing. Thanks for sharing this rare piece with us---altho, anything with Terry is a gem. Nice close ups of Peter at 2:04 and 2:54. Very nice.
Dude, you have hit such a gold mine of classic footage. Thanks so much. This is one of my never-was-a-hit alltime favorites. Love the horn like. But I still wish Terry'd taken the solo rather than Walter. Mr. P just puts out a bunch of notes; his solos virtually never seem to go anywhere.
And, of course, you wish the cameraman had known the future, and given Terry a lot more face-time (and finger-time)!
Im sorry but as a saxophonist I take offense to that. Putting out notes is solo, Terry Kath also does that, its just easier for hime cuz he doesn't use his lungs to play guitar which challenging, so let Walter take the stage this time. Don't get me wrong I love Terry but any solo Chicago does is great.
Well, unless you're Parazaider, you shouldn't be offended. You probably do cool solo's. I've never seen any as shapeless as Walt's tend to be. He's got the thing where he does three notes in rapid succession over and over and over, and he's got the thing where he holds a note for a very long time. And that's pretty much his mainstay. Obviously plays what Jimmy writes really well, but doesn't seem to structure his solo's.
One Dan's opinion, your mileage certainly may vary!
I think the band was on fire for this performance. The current line up is pretty good and is the closest to the "original" sounding Chicago. This is Classic Chicago!
This is truly one of Chicago's greatest kick-ass songs, because it showcases all of the band's strengths in one song----Terry Kath pumping the guitar like a weapon and barking out bluesy vocals, Robert and Peter harmonizing flawlessly, Danny's drumming on fire, and the horn sectin just cooking throughout, with a soaring bridge and then an ambitioius sax solo at the end.
The first time I heard this beautyful song was on the italian radio, so so so long time ago!!! Perhaps 1973? I frequented the Liceo (high school) in Brindisi...
