@NJRocks281 My research does indicate that Mr. Jefferson was indeed a soft-spoken gentleman. In this video, J.D. Sutton is in an auditorium with a very inadequate sound system, therefore accounting for his overly raised voice. If you're going to do a show, you have to be heard in the back of the room.
According to Jefferson experts, he sounded NOTHING like this guy. He was very quiet and not a particularly good orator. His written works are brilliant and respectable. Too bad he was one of the greatest hypocrites in American history, same as his buddy and neighbor, Madison. Both were against slavery, but 'owned' over 200 of them, and decided ultimately that, while they thought slavery was wrong, they couldn't "afford" to free theirs. Puhleeze. Jefferson is how you spell `hypocrite'.
Maybe Jefferson wasn't a great orator, but an actor has to project his / her voice. It's a performance, after all. If he spoke softly, like Jefferson, nobody would be able to hear him!
@ vandexter101 - he inherited 200 slaves. Realistically, would those slaves have had a better life had he freed them - probably not - it was the time period in which they lived that prohibited such freedom. Jefferson wanted to end slavery - read his words carefully.

Read the Adams-Jefferson letters, the complete correspondence between Thomas Jefferson and Abigail & John Adams by Lester J. Cappon. One of the most misquoted and misunderstood declarations made by Jefferson is the separation clause. Jefferson NEVER intended to separate the church and the state... He didn't want the state to form it's own religion, period! Bridge Builders has an excellent video titled "America's Godly Heritage" which will explain everything about the separation claims. Or not!
Thomas Jefferson (as well as George Washington, John Adams, and nearly every early president to surpass them) did believe in the concept of 'separation of church and state.' We know by their personal writings [and beliefs], as well as thier presidencies.
Thomas Jefferson was so radical about it, he was often falsely accused of being an atheist, when in fact he was a deist.
@pbsproducer Funny that you are directing viewers to an evangelical web site. certainly you would have no ax to grind. Instead of "old odd ends stol'n forth from..." why don't you direct viewers to the entirety of Jefferson's writings. Or would the whole dispute your claim?
The first amendment to the constitution dispenses with this "christian nation" assertion. Besides, any one who believes that the church and state should not be separate is committing a supreme act of foolishness, and contradicts the very freedoms that are outlined in our bill of rights and constitution. Period. Paragraph.
@pbsproducer How can we believe you when you can't even quote the name of David Barton's website. It's Wallbuilders, not "Bridge Builders". Watch "David Barton Lies About Chris Rodda" on youtube and read her book.

What would it be like to spend an evening with Thomas Jefferson... as his slave? One of hundreds of slaves, in fact. But let's pick one. I'd like you to spend the evening with Jefferson as a 14 year-old slave girl named Sally Hemings. Whom he raped repeatedly, and impregnated when she was 16. He was 42. I'm sure he would have accepted you saying "no" to him. After all, you are a slave and can say no. Then, when he is finished with you, never releases you from slavery. Yep, great man...
wow, you must know nothing of history. There is much evidence that Sally Hemmings and Jefferson had a romantic relationship, he was not raping her. Yes, he actually did free the children he had with her and did not officially free her but she did live in freedom after he passed on. Maybe you ought to read more.
Sally Hemmings was his sister-in-law. Her father was also the father of Jefferson's wife, and she brought Sally with her when she married Jefferson.
People who are looking at the situation through 21st century eyes can't completely understand the complicated realtionships that existed in that far-off time. Jefferson deplored slavery. If you slept through history class go and do a quick review before sounding off!
You are wrong on the point that Patty, Jeffersons wife brought Sally with her. Jefferson inherited Sally when his father-in-law died. It is true that Jefferson, in his writings, deplored slavery, but never did anything of value to prohibit its expansion and acceptance. How that was a nice soundbyte at the end of your rant, you did not really disprove or say anything that could be considered an argument against my reply below to ormember.
Thomas Jefferson is a genius and a true American patriot. It is sad how far USA has moved away from Jefferson's ideology. It is time for us to do something about it and take our country back. Power to the People!!!!
This looks excellent. I wish I could see this whole performance in real life. In high school history classes I learned all about Rosa Parks and the holocaust (not that I don't think those are important subjects), but I learned almost nothing about the founding fathers. I guess they weren't PC enough.
education is of the greatest importance. but socialism does not work. the government already has their filthy federal claws entrenched far too deeply in the education (or lack thereof) system in this country. it is too bad there is so much sodium fluoride in the drinking water, maybe people wouldnt be so apathetic and would actually place the value of education in a higher esteem.
Where is the socialism? Do you mean the profits are kept by the banks and corporations and the loses are "socialized" to the people? I think that is what you meant to say. The founders of this country could be considered pre-socialists. "All men are created equal?" "Congress issuing money interest free for the sake of commerce?" Sounds kinda socialist to me. No "winners and losers" with those ideas. An even playing field.
i love Jefferson, I have his problem too. I have trouble speaking in front of many people because I start to lose my train of thought, and sometimes i have a slight lisp. However, when in front of a few people I speak normally. when you have this issue your writing skills usually excel, but I also love to write.
Thomas Jefferson didn't write the Constitution. He wrote the Declaration of Independence. He was in France, as ambassador of the U.S., when the constitution was being written. He did send James Madison, who in considered the mind behind the constitution, 100s of books about government and philosophy which helped form Madison's ideas about what should be in the constitution.

Thom Jefferson, merely an outspoken flamboyant, used by the others because he spoke real pretty and fancied himself a writer... They probably were glad to be rid of his long-winded speeches about forming a god-less nation of tobacco farmers and other nonsense. I say he's the one that again planted the seeds of disension, who misrepresented the real foundation of the peoples of America.
I am a conservative(real one, not neoconservative) and I believe in Thomas Jefferson's writings of liberty and peace. His point was that people should have the right to freedom and liberty. The smaller the federal government the better!
I'm not too sure what a conservative is, but I do know what freedom is. I know what a king is, and I'm proud to be a king without subjects. I do what ever I please and try my hardest not to interfere with other kings doing the same.
Which is partly why it was so great. You could hardly call him a socialist unless you consider the US to be a purely socialist country. He was for a minimum wage, universal schools, and the abolition of slavery. If that is socialism than socialism is great.
Correct! Universal education for all! we need free college education because we need people to be educated. A dumbed down people are less likely to overthrow fascist regime.
... Universal Education... some of us already get money from the government that people dont have to pay back..... " People who are dependent of the Government are slaves of the Government".... and you know where the money comes from........... yeah.. .. YOU and ME......
where the f*** did tj ever say anything about federal mandated min. wage, federal schools funded with tax dollars taken from the citizens? Or anything else like that? Your f'in crazy. And yes that stuff up there is Socialism. And tj is no socialist.

They were pretty good but Paine was the best.

Very very good. Thomas Jefferson was a wonderful and insiteful leader of America in the early days of the republic. God bless all men of good will.

Benjamin Frnaklin and Alexander and John Adams and Abigail Adams are cooler

just to clear it up, Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. An entire convention wrote the constitution.

Thomas Paine is better.

Paine was good but the second half of Rights of Man started to get more into an early blueprint of socialism, which I disagree with.
