It is ironic to me that these two classically trained dancers living where the art was encouraged but separated from the rest of the world of dance by the iron curtain manged to create such lovely modern works. All technicque aside they were so creative and how lovely to work together for so long!.
Ekaterina Maksimova is one of my most favourite ballerinas. I have seen this film on TV when it was just released, and I remember it impressed me so much. It still is alive in my memory, though so many years have passed. Maris Liepa was very good too.
maximova was perfection in a human being. so light and yet so powerful. much different in her immense power than, say, ulanova...but i measure both geniuses the same. just different stylistic qualities.
As raymonda said, it is based on Pigmallion and Maksimova plays the statue which turned alive, so that's why her movements in the beginning are so jerky, she just has not danced and even moved much before :)

It is a movie based on GBShaw's Pygmelion - the basis for the My Fair Lady play.
Instead of Higgins teaching Eliza to speak properly, this film has the professor teaching her to dance. Yes - POST MORE!
