to add to the brilliance, they added the Jerry Lewis 'Typewriter Sketch' too - w/ Short pulling up a piece of paper at the end...such genius in the details!!! amazing.
For other SCTV fans here, i just uploaded the full 2 hour youtube.com/watch?v=rS1nNIyJIt4
Disc 5, Vol. 1 of the DVD for everyone to enjoy - it also has a 1999 cast reunion & Q&A moderated by Conan O'Brien at the end. Enjoy, all - (and of course, please rate and comment your SCTV reminiscences).
Please post "Tender Jerries" a take off of the Oscar winning film Tender Mercies. Jerry Lewis takes the part of a down and out ex- country singer working at a gas station. Of course Short palys Jerry.
I try to show SCTV to my younger friends and they just look at it stone faced. They look at me strange because I am laughing, but I think it's funny." It was really one of the best comedies ever to be put on television.
Yeah, that's to be expected from women. Whenever that don't get something, that's what they do. I seem to remember they did the same thing in elementary school.
Martin Short was to SCTV what Jimmy Page was to the Yardbirds. I'm sure there were those in the network who thought the show was giving out with so many major cast members leaving when Martin Short showed up. He must have blown a lot of people's mind at the time.
imtheslime2, yeah, I agree, even though he's my least favorite cast member of that era; to me it illustrates the fact that the rest of the core cast members were brilliant. I doubt that this show will ever be equalled.
Brilliant Show. So funny and way more entertaining than Hiedi and Spencer move to Mars, well maybe not that entertaining.....Hilarious and I love Marty Short!
Oh My God...it's hurts from laughing so much..I've got tears in my eyes...I'd forgotten what a scream SCTV was...I think Time magazine called the the "Comedic Assassins". Inspired lunacy is what I'd call it-nothing even comes close to SCTV now. Thanks so much for posting this gem.
"brett6556": It was head and shoulders above SNL. And "so ahead of its time"; totally agree. They managed to connect totally unrelated events, programs and situations, and went off into a wonderfully hilarious absurdity. I mean: Jerry Lewis meets Bergman. It was done - deliberately to look cheap and cheesy - which was the essence of the drop dead, fall of the couch hilarity. A different time we'll never see again. However, I have them all on videotape, and would post if I knew how; sorry.
Connecting the totally unrelated...the Merv Griffith Show took a simple name substitution and ran with it...Eugene Levy as Floyd the Barber was inspired! OOOooohhh!
"Vincek88": "OOOooohhh - Boo-Hoo ha ha ha...!!!" LOL!!! Did you ever see Merv Griffin's "Salute to the 60s" Special!!?? Hilarious. And, BTW, since I posted my comment, I've uploaded several SCTV sketches. Check 'em out. I apologize for the rather primitive quality, but they're all from old videotapes, and I can't figure out the right camera settings, etc. But they could be worse! Eugene Levy rules!!! Cheers!
Well, Merv and Floyd both 'OOOooohhh'ed together in that one, so, tough call.
I just ordered the SCTV Volume 3 DVD, on the strength of their bizarre 'Rome Italian Style' movie parody, and the brutal 'Jerry Lewis Live on the Champs-Elysses'.
LOL! "Rome: Italian Style", with Joe Flaherty riding a bike with training wheels!!! And Jerry Lewis Live ..... How about Eugene Levy's Perry Como. One could go on and on. Enjoy your DVD. If you don't mind a lousy video, keep checking out my page as I add to the list. Cheers Vince.
You know what i think is funny is that SCTV was the best TV show on at the time by a long ways yet NBC stuck it on Friday nights a 12:30. How pathetic is that.
omg, I wish Bergman had put Lewis in a movie...

"Cy Goydeninn?"
"I hate you!"
That was pretty hilarious. If you appreciate Ingmar Bergman it's an even funnier sketch.
